This place didn’t impress me the first time I ate here. The fried rice honestly only tasted like white rice dyed yellow, And I didn’t like the low mein. I still am not a huge fan of the rice, but if you get it with shrimp, it’s more tolerable. What made me decide to give it a good review though is their egg rolls and their black pepper chicken, both of which are amazing. So are all their meals great? No, but you don’t like every single menu item anywhere. I’m so glad I gave them a second chance and ordered something I normally don’t, because now i’m a fan.

We had lunch here yesterday. There were four of us and we each ordered an entrée that comes with fried rice. In fact, I ordered the House Special Fried Rice. What they served was steamed rice with a bit of yellow coloring. Definitely not fried in any way. I thought they must have misunderstood our orders. But no, the lady behind the counter said that, «Yes, this is fried rice.» I did not argue with her. I mean if she is going to so blatantly lie to my face, was there really any point in complaining? We were there between 12:30 and 1:00PM. I did wonder why we were the only customers. Now I know!

I ordered the Beef W. Fresh Scallops $ 12.95. The food tasted fine. But there were only two scallops the size of a pearl onions. The beef was the cheapest cut of beef, fatty. They filled the take-out box with broccoli. I also ordered the hot and sour soup which tasted good. While the taste was good, I paid for scallops but did not get what I paid for. Instead I will travel to New Japan in Pittsboro for their hibachi scallops. I have had 5 large scallops on several occasions and 8 medium scallops on other occassions for $ 9.95.

Ordered a chicken dish for lunch. Chicken just did not taste like chicken. It is difficult to describe but the chicken was very soft. Not tender but soft/chewy. Very little flavor to the dish. The place has poor ventilation which makes the place smell like overheated cooking oil. I don’t expect anything gourmet, but the food should at least taste good. Cannot comment on other dishes but from the other reviews on here I can’t imagine them being much better.

This is what I normally expect for Chinese. Likely supplied by Asian foods Corporation, the food is typical. Nothing unique, but normal«run-of-the-mill«Chinese. If you need normal Chinese, but nothing special, this is a good choice

China Chef is a great place to go for a quick and inexpensive lunch, but I definitely don’t recommend it for dinner. The food is above average Chinese fare(I love the wonton soup) and take-out is usually ready in about 10 minutes. However, dinner entrees are far more expensive than lunch and on the evening that I decided to dine in, the service was terrible. The staff is nice, but the problem is that they just don’t have enough employees. They had one person filling drinks, one person taking orders, and maybe two people cooking and running food. Just not a very good set-up, management-wise. From the time we sat down to the time we left, it took a full hour and a half, 45 minutes of which was spent waiting on food after our order had been taken. To make matters worse, our bill was about $ 50 for two people that had ordered orange chicken entrees that are less than $ 10 for lunch. I can definitely recommend China Chef for lunch, but for dinner I’d say pick a different restaurant altogether.

I wasn’t that impressed with this Chinese Restaurant. The shrimp fried rice we ordered was only luke-warm when we got it, and we were afraid they hadn’t cooked it long enough. The sweet and sour pork did not have as tangy of a sauce as I would have liked, and the rice seemed more like minute rice than sticky rice. The location is convenient to those living in Governor’s Club, but if you have the time, I would try somewhere else.
