When I moved from SW. Fla. to Indy four years ago, I was so pleased to find a solid seafood restaurant nearby. Mitchell’s has been a seafood staple for me with fresh choices, good service, and a nice clean atmosphere. I enjoyed it so much that I became a Landry’s Club member as I was planning on coming here often as we had dined here at least 15 times since moving here. Our last 3 visits have been a turning point and Mitchell’s is definitely slipping. Some of the new wait staff seems hurried and doesn’t take the time to explain dishes or specials anymore and we had to flag our server down on the last 2 visits because they were not around. During our last two dinners here, the booth & table were sticky and there was trash on the floor. My last dinner at Mitchell’s was on Christmas Day and the experience was poor again. The young lady at the hostess stand(same each time) has been flippant and quick the last 2 visits. Christmas Day we walked in and I wished her Merry Christmas and she responded with a sour, «How many?» We ordered dinner and noticed the table was very sticky… if it was wiped, it wasn’t with a clean cloth. When my wife’s riesling came… the glass was dirty, not spotty… just plain dirty. The only thing dirtier was the greasy finger prints on the glass next to the booth. I worked in many restaurants as a young man in Fla. I worked many holidays(I would have rather been home) but still managed to greet families with a warm smile and common courtesy and truly meant it… even on busy holidays. Even though we were ‘in the weeds’ and busy sometimes, the management was professional and made sure tables were wiped, floors were clean, and glasses were never allowed to go to a table dirty. I’m not sure what’s going on here, why the place is getting dirty/sloppy, and why the ladies at the hostess stand are so unprofessional and crabby? It’s sad though because the seafood is still very top shelf, but unfriendly service(hostess stand), dirty stick tables & floors, and hurried waitstaff are becoming the norm here. We used to love coming to Mitchell’s for the experience, food, and friendliness… it would be wonderful to see this establishment return to being a destination again, not just another seafood restaurant.

Food is OK, but service was sub par. People are giving service high scores but I noticed that most people don’t expect much. They don’t mind being greeted with a flat«how many» and eat at a soiled upholstered booth, dirt on your glass window. We come here for the bread — sourdough is better than san fran’s.

Had a large family gathering at this Mitchell’s location and everyone was pleased. A reservation for seven had been made online several weeks in advance and Mitchell’s was very good about follow-up and confirmation. As for our meal, everyone was happy. Most of us enjoyed a cup of Lobster Bisque and as an appetizer a full plate of oysters on the half shell was ordered. The soup was nice and creamy and the oysters were fresh and tasty. I myself had a simple entrée of grilled sea bass, which came with steamed vegetables and mashed potatoes and was very satsifying. I’m on a weight loss kick these days but the menu contains pretty much anything you’d ever want in the seafood realm, including some items that you might never had heard of, such as «Lobster Macaroni & Cheese*. Service was just a tad slow but I chalked that up to how busy the place was on this Saturday evening. Our waitress was very on top of things and very personable. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant and would definitely like to return sometime soon.

Another home run this afternoon! Great seared ahi, with a mojito on the side. The bar was the best place to be on this Sunday afternoon. Quiet with personal service from the fab bartender.

We visited on an early evening before the crowd began to arrive. We sat outside and enjoyed the fresh air and great evening. We ordered Walleye and it was great. The portion was good for the two of us(we normally order one entrée for the two of us). Our server was excellent, as she was pleasant, helpful, and was completely attentive even though she was waiting on many tables. When we want fish, we will definitely return.

Every time my parents come into town we visit Mitchell’s. Every time it hits 5 stars. I cannot say enough good things about this place. My go-to is the scallop dish, but I like to be adventurous when I’m here. Last time I was there I tried my mom’s glazed salmon. SOGOOD! Dessert is amazing also! You can never go wrong with the key lime pie.

Excellent food and service. A place to visit again no doubt. Everything tastes great. We had a big fish sandwich, a shrimp salad, and a salmon dish. All were fantastic.

Overall a very mediocre experience. It was recently acquired by the same seafood chain as McCormick and Shmicks. We left early and went across the street to Kona Grill. It’s still the same farmed fish but at least it’s cheaper. If you live in Indiana you’re better off sticking to meat and potatoes and save the seafood for your next trip to the coast

I came here on a rainy first day of my vacay. No one was here, or maybe one other table, when I arrived. Service was OK, lacking at times. The crab cakes were pretty good and they were fresh. My dish came with two cakes, which had a good amount of crab in them. I didn’t care for the dish coming with corn, but the mashed potatoes were home made and good as well. The crème brulé was good; its a nice and serving. I may come here again to try salmon, as the seafood selection makes the trip worth it.

We have enjoyed our past visits to Mitchell“s, and today’s lunch was on par with our past experiences. We typically sit in the lounge area, more relaxed than the main dining room and we’ve always enjoyed the bartender’s suggestions. My husband loved his fish and chips– flaky, large pieces of fish with a tasty batter. The hush puppies were my favorite part of the meal. I had the fish tacos and they were yummy too.

I love Mitchell’s! I dine there often for lunch and have gone many times for dinner parties with friends. The crab cakes are some of the best in the city and the fresh fish options have always been a hit with those I’ve dined with. The service is always wonderful and the parking plentiful. It’s easy to get to in the hustle and bustle of Clay Terrace and always consistently great!

We had a private dinner with our family before my son was married and choose Mitchell’s because of the great food. We used the private room and to no surprise the food was amazing, but the service was extremely the best. It was such a very special dinner to have together as my grown men children are now across the country and it was very special to me to have this special dinner and for it to be a great experience while we were all together. Thank you so much for a terrific memory and delicious food.

Great seafood spot! We came on a Wednesday evening so no crowd. Everything was delicious! We had a spread of appetizers including lobster dip, bacon wrapped shrimp and spicy crispy shrimp which were all great! My main course the stuffed cod was a great portion and the mashed potatoes were delicious. Then desert omg! Save room. I highly recommend this place!

Completely solid meal – the way they work the menu reminds me a bit of Oceanaire or McCormick and Schmicks. You can pick a fish, then a topping/style of preparation. It does come with some sides and looks like the fish changes on a regular basis, so I’m guessing that means it’s pretty fresh. Bit on the spendy side, much like the aforementioned, but I doubt you’d have a bad meal here.

I was here mid-week for a work dinner, and was glad to find there is a lot of parking right behind the restaurant since it was crazy cold, and I didn’t feel like a long walk around Clay Terrace. I had been here once before for a work lunch, but this was my first trip for dinner. I was really glad I looked at the menu online before coming, because there really are a lot of choices on the menu! There are specials that require no decisions, but if you order any of the fresh seafood other than the specials, you get to pick from a variety of preparation styles. I opted for the trout prepared Shang-hi style which was quite good! The slightly sweet soy-ginger sauce didn’t overpower the trout, and the sticky rice and spinach were nice complements. I had the key lime pie for dessert which was a reasonable portion compared to the insanely large carrot cake slab that could easily feed 4 – 5 people. The pie was good, with a fresh graham cracker crust. The person who ordered the carrot cake took most of it home, but said it was good as well! Service was good, and the atmosphere worked well for a business dinner since it was relatively quiet, allowing for easy conversation. I love that they have a fish counter where customers can buy raw, fresh fish to take home to cook. I’m not up this far north too often, but will need to keep this in mind the next time I am up around Clay Terrace!

I’m so far behind. I must have 100 entries to make here. Let’s start w/Mitchell’s. I’ve had hits and misses here so had stayed away for a long, long time. But then a very good friend & I were discussing steaks, cheesecakes and various desserts in and around Indy. Carrot Cake came up and he suggested I should at least give Mitchell’s another chance — if solely for dessert. Here it is — a review just of dessert — and carrot cake in particular: 4.5 stars Cold, nasty, blustery Sunday afternoon in January — ick. Decided to take a break and sauntered into Mitchell’s for a hot cuppa joe and check out the desserts in the bar. Schinikies. Coffee was good — the fresh pot on refills was better — but that Carrot Cake was something else. Not divine or ethereal mind you — but a very good entry. Elevation alone gains a star. Dios mio! Caution — menu suggests big enough to share for 2. Well, that was just wrong. It’s enough to share between a family of 4 or 5. We took more than half out the door. My only complaint [or rather advice] — served much too cold. Get it to go then let it come closer to room temp for serving.

Another great meal at Mitchell’s. Although officially a casual dining restaurant, it’s a bit more upscale, which is great. We need more of those. The servers are well trained and courteous, and the food speaks for itself. Very nicely prepared and always fresh. They also have a large outdoor seating area, if you’re into that.

Was this meal worth the expensive price tag, you ask? Absolutely not. I repeat, absolutely not. There wasn’t a single item on the menu worth returning for. Even if we aren’t in love with a particular dining experience overall, generally there’s at least one gem that we’d come back for – like the bread pudding at Bru Burger or the two apps at Cerulean. We didn’t love all of our dishes at those restaurants, but we would, and have, made the trip back for a certain item. On a positive note, our server was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable when it came to the menu, which is a plus. We are truly dumbfounded by the high ratings this place gets on Unilocal and other review sites, but I guess that’s why you have to try a place for yourself just to be sure.

Drove 30 mins to try their lobster roll and that was a BIG disappointment. Lobster roll was not worth the drive. Skimpy and flavorless. Crab dip was lacking salt. Lobster bisque was overly salty. Oysters were skimpy and too fishy. Shrimp and scallop ceviche was small but good. Lobster Mac and cheese… Hmmmm… Nothing out of the ordinary. Boxed Mac and cheese tastes better to me! Although service was great, I will not be returning. Was hoping it would be a winner so I could bring my family that are coming into town. Maybe not.

First and foremost, saltwater seafood/shellfish swells my throat shut, throws hives all over my legs followed by this really attractive eyes rolling back in my head… thing… With that visual in mind, it goes without saying that I was more on the veggie/chicken side of experiencing Mitchell’s. However, my sister and seafood enthusiast partner-in-crime took the 100% fishy route. Mitchell’s was gracious enough to create a special sans-fish menu for me during their 4 course Sam Adams beer dinner(which, they are now hoping to serve near-monthly). My feast was as such: Course One: Spinach and artichoke dip served with lightly salted tortilla chips Course Two: Thai Chopped Salad: delicious! chopped cabbage, sesame seeds, chopped veggies with a tasty peanut butter dressing(I could have licked the bowl clean) Quite possibly my favorite course of the meal(the chef informed us that this is fairly new to Mitchell’s menu) Course Three: Jamaican Jerk Chicken(dry rub) topped with mango salsa and black beans and rice(delicious! I would go back for this dish alone) Course Four: strawberry shortcake served with vanilla ice cream and a lemon cupcake(meh, the cupcake was on the dry side — not my favorite of the four) As for my sister’s meal — her favorite course was the crab and shrimp stuffed Sea Bass served with a heaping pile of buttery and sinful mashed red potatoes. Service: both friendly and attentive! Despite my trips to Carmel being few and far between, I would make the road trip up north with family for a visit to Mitchell’s. The only thing that held me back from the fifth star was the educational aspect of the beer dinner — I was very surprised that they gathered our menus after ordering which showed the beer pairings course to course. It was off to a bit of an akward start with timing, who talked, etc. The biggest factor was probably that it seemed that some of our fellow attendees weren’t overly interested in learning more about the food or drink. Why pay $ 50 a pop if you don’t want to learn about what your shoving down your throat?
