I tried this for the first time today. I was surprised that some vendors had sold out about 10:30AM(only 1.5 hrs being opened). However, I did try the chicken and mozzarella pupusa. This ethnic food was just OK, and I am not drawn to pay $ 3 for another one. There were probably less than 20 vendors in the building in the back of Founders Park.

Bummer… that’s it… just a handful of vendors is what you will find at this winter market located right off of Hazel Dale/116th in Founders Park, Saturdays 9am-12pm. I have stopped in several times hoping to gather some fresh seasonal produce and have found only a small variety of businesses selling prepared foods(soup, casseroles, salad dressing, coffee), a handful of local meat/egg producers(Phelps Farms, Becker Farms), a few options for a quick meal(Skillington Farms, 3 n 1 Restaurant, Rosie’s Riblets), and fabulous chocolate artisans(Xchocol’art, Chocolate for the Spirit). I know it’s winter so fresh produce is slim pickins but toss me some potatoes and I will make a meal. I have been in and out in 15 minutes. While I love the vendors currently present at this market I am looking for more variety and selection, a similar vibe to the wonderful summer market. I know this market has the potential to become great I am just hoping over time it will get there. It would be wonderful to have a market similar to the Indy Winter Farmers Market downtown located on the North Side.

Meh. While Carmel’s Farmers Market in the summer boasts a wide variety of home grown goodness, the Winter Farmer’s Market is less than spectacular. You’ll find the majority of your summer favs indoors selling their wares, but the space is small and takes less than ten minutes to peruse. I’m all for supporting an entrepreneurial heat wave in the winter, but the space lacks and restricts browsing and the the number of retailers. I do appreciate that the market keeps it to real product made/grown by true Hoosiers. You won’t find a hodge podge of multi-level marketing/recruiters seeking suckers with a bouquet of plastics, lotions, soap, sunscreen, makeup, vitamins, candles, fabric handbags, and the like. I hope that continues in the future. In the long run if you have a favorite vendor that causes a craving and the only way to purchase the product is by finding them at the Winter Farmer’s Market— go. Otherwise, chase them down one off or hang tight and wait for the opening day during summer.
