First of all J was one of the most friendly people I’ve ever met in the world! My hub and I both had the pork Lau Lau which was the bomb! Juicy with just the right amount of perfectly delectable pieces of pig fat mixed in the juicy flaky pork. The taro leaf was cooked to perfection as was the rice and the mac salad was probably the best I’ve ever had! Yum! Thanks super J for a true taste of Hawaii

Don’t leave the big island without trying the authentic Hawaiian food from this unassuming little shack. The pig lau laus are super tasty and the two scoop rice is perfect. The ladies behind the counter will make you feel like ohana. I’ll be dreaming of those lau laus for years to come. A sign read, «No Mo Poi. Taro shortage» when we were there, hopefully you’ll have better timing.

Had a tough time deciding how to describe this place. We ate inside, not the cleanest of places, very much a dive kind of place. Most patrons took the food out to their car and ate there. The Pork and Cabbage was delicious, though salty. Mac salad was fine and the Lomi Lomi was most excellent. Pork Lau Lau was the best I’ve ever had, though again very salty. Portions are small. Taro shortage meant the highly anticipated Kulolo was unavailable.

I can’t believe I haven’t written a review yet of this place! Before Super J’s, I was not a fan of lau lau… The ones I’ve tried were often too dry or the meat was too hard. I became a lau lau lover after eating at Super J’s. The meat is super tender! The Lomi salmon is the cherry on top, you must try it with the pork lau lau. The food at Super J’s tastes like a home cooked meal, which are always the best kind of meals! If I could eat there everyday, I would!

Wow wow wow !!! Sure, if it weren’t for the Unilocal reviews, we certainly would not have stopped there for lunch. First of all we might have not noticed, and even if we did, we still would not have ventured in this little humble shack. Not that we like fancy places, but generally, we like clean, engaging restaurants. We trusted Unilocal so we went in anyway, and boy we were not disappointed. It felt like getting back home at the parents’ after having moved out. As soon as I went to the counter, a nice lady greeted me and asked if I knew what I wanted for lunch. As it was my first venture in an Hawaiian restaurant, I was busy trying to find the menu on the counter and on the walls behind her to figure out what exactly was on offer. So I asked her for advice. She first asked if our two daughters, my wife and I were very hungry or not. Coming there right after climbing back up the trail from Captain Cook monument(in 45min !) we were more thirsty than hungry, so we told her so. But having read about her famous Lau Lau, we wanted to taste it. She also explained that their menu was rather limited, basically Lau Lau or pork with cabbage was the choice for entrees. She did not go into details about the sides and instead told us to just sit at a table and she would take care of us: we did not even have to order !!! She brought 2 plates for the adults, each with one Lau Lau, a scoop of pasta salad, a scoop of rice and some tomato and onion salsa. For the girls, she brought mini plates consisting of half a Lau Lau and a scoop of rice, stating that if they wanted more they should tell her. On top of that, she also gave us a bowl of pork with cabbage for us to share. It was DELICIOUS !! All of it !! And the portions were enough. And the price was very reasonable, less than $ 30 for all of us with the drinks. We liked it so much we took some frozen Lau Lau to go … to eat the next day at our resort !! Overall we felt it was a extremely agreeable experience in very very good authentic restaurant on our first stay in Hawaii !!!

ABSOLUTELYGOHERE. Listen to the other 290 something reviews and Guy Fieri and DONOTMISSTHIS. If I could have packed more into my suitcase I probably would have packed home frozen packages of this. Cousin and I came for lunch while at the Kona Historical Society/Greenwell Farms. We asked the bakers what their local recommendations were and everybody recommended this place. We thus had to try. This place can be missable when driving on 11. There isn’t a sign on top of the building, but rather, the iconic yellow wall. If your passenger is paying attention though you shouldn’t drive past it. At about 12:30pm on a Thursday, there was only one other party and a bunch of people picking up to go orders. We definitely felt like we were eating out of someone’s home. Cousin and I got plate lunches(she got chicken, I got pork), and a drink each. I ended up adding the cabbage/kahlua pork and a second lau lau, and she got a side of poi. The cabbage/kahlua pork was a little short on pork, but worked as a perfect side dish to the lau lau. The chicken lau lau is bone in and very tender, but they ran out after cousin got served so I didn’t get one. We were a little confused by the pricing when ordering so they actually just waved their hands and said pay after eating. Never have I had that when eating out. :o I of course did as they asked and the total came out to $ 26 for our two plates+drinks+additions, so I don’t know what anything costs here by itself lol. It was worth it though! Absolutely coming back~

Excellent Lau Lau. Perfection. Rice is the perfect stickiness. The macaroni salad is done right and not floating in mayo. Delicious strawberry lemonade. I am sure you know what Lau Lau is by reading other reviews, but have If you haven’t tried it before it is pork wrapped in taro leaf and steamed for several hours. The taro taste similar to spinach and makes a flavorful container for the pork. Which is flavorful, and not greasy. The mother and daughter team are delightful, kind, and so happy to have you! I love giving my business to people who value you as a customer. The plate in the photo is $ 9.00. They also have frozen Lau Lau which I bought to take back to California. Enjoy! Aloha!

This was absolutely our favorite meal while in Hawaii. The laulau was simply wonderful, as were the sides. The best part is the fantastic warmth of the owners and cashier. Very friendly and helpful. Don’t underestimate this little place…

This place is amazing!!! I had laulau pork and my wife had laulau chicken. Both were delicioussss! No wonder it has got 5 stars rating. Pork and chicken both were juicy and tender. Unbeatable flavors !! It is a small local restaurant, but the hospitality and food is top notch. Best place if you are looking for food with hawaiian touch !! Excellent!

The individuals who worked here were truly kind and welcoming. My sisters liked the food a bit more than I did. But I have to say that it felt like a warm homemade meal — because it was! Like most other reviewers, we tried the pork lau-lau with a side of mac & cheese. No complaints here! It was nice to stop by and support a true local business! I would recommend stopping by if you’re in the mood for an authentic home cooked meal.

Had the pork laulau plate and added on the Kalua pork and cabbage. Enough food for two of us. Rice, mixed together potato salad and Mac and cheese, and the limo salmon(which was really mostly cut up tomato, like a salsa, with a fish aftertaste) The sweet people that work here were telling us how labor intensive it is to assemble the laulau, with the taro leaves, then it cooks for ten hours in a steamer! No wonder they taste so good. You can take them home frozen. She said people from Japan take them home no problem We came here after visiting the green sand beach. Tonight is sunset sailing cruise.

If you are in The area and skip Super Js, I you are making a big mistake! The Pork Laulau, which comes with sides of lomi salmon, rice and macaroni salad is great! Janet was there(one of the SuperJs and a «star» on Food Network’s Delicious Eats) and was friendly and helpful as was her daughter. Aloha spoken.

YUP! I tried Lau Lau back in Oahu back in 2005 and hated it… but I’m an older and mature foodie now, so I thought I would give this a try after seeing the Unilocal reviews. $ 9.50 Plate includes a Lau Lau(pork or chicken), mac, rice, and lomi lomi. $ 3 gets you another Lau Lau a la carte, which I did. These are DELICIOUS!!! Juicy meat wrapped in taro leaves. Cheap and delicious! Real locals eat here and get these to go. They do sell out, so I’d plan on eating lunch here rather than an early dinner. We came in around 3:00pm and got the last pork lau lau! *Yuppy/Trust Fund Kid Warning: this is not a fancy sit down restaurant or café. Its literally a local’s home with 8 plastic chairs and 2 long plastic tables inside. If you can’t handle this, go back to your yuppy resort.

I ordered the pork lau lau, side poi and lomi salmon. My husband ordered the same plus rice and mac salad. It was a perfect meal. Poi was super fresh, lau lau was delicious. Lots of lu’au leaf, lots of pork– nice and tender, not too fatty, not too lean. Super friendly family owned service and I loved the hole in the wall atmosphere.

Fresh(I suppose that is a relative term) from our hike down to and up from Captain Cook Monument in Kealakekua Bay, we headed out to Super J’s for lunch for the first time. We heard about Super J’s from Andrew Zimmern’s Bizarre Foods TV show and, after checking out Unilocal reviews, decided to stop by. We actually planned to stop by for dinner after exploring the Volcanoes National Park but figured we didn’t have time before Super J’s closed at 6:30PM… so lunch after a hike to Captain Cook Monument seemed like the better bet. We were initially mildly concerned we might appear too grimy after our hike to eat in Super J’s…and our concerns melted away after seeing a crib by the door and what looked like someone’s living room doing double duty as the dining area, with inexpensive tables and chairs, for customers. I guess it doesn’t get more homey than that. After wiping off some grime in their bathroom(they apparently have some wet wipes my wife used, so maybe they anticipate grimy hikers) we were ready to order. Their menu is straightforward… pork or chicken laulau plate or the kalua pork and cabbage plate, with mac salad, lomi lomi salmon and white rice. I’ve had pork laulau before so I ordered it while my wife and her friend tried their kalua pork and cabbage plate. Their laulau was very good, flavorful and tender, although I was expecting some butterfish to go with the pork. Super J’s version of laulau just had pork in it. Not being Hawaiian or Polynesian, I can’t tell which is more authentic than the other. My wife and her friend both loved their plate… although they thought the lomi lomi salmon was a bit fishy for their tastes. While the food was tasty, we thought what made our experience at Super J’s worth writing about was the warmness and genuine hospitality the proprietors showed us… it’s like we were guests invited to dine with them in their own house(which I guess it kind of was). Janice«Super J’s» and everyone there were so welcoming, always smiling. They even showed us how they steam their laulau in a steamer specifically made for them. While you are on the Kona side of the Big Island, you just have to stop by and have a taste of ono kine grindz.

Wow,. it is everything people say. No frills, all flavour, authentic people that don’t care to grow the business, just to sell what they make and there should be zero problem doing that. Laulau is awesome,. and I suspect this is authentic as it gets. Like all people in Hawaii,. these folks are super friendly and deserve your money.

Super Js is the definition of ono kine grindz. Delicious local island style food served with aloha! The kalua pork and cabbage broke da moufff. Such delicious flavors in a simple, clean dish. They’re a little skimpy with the pork, but the flavors of the pork are so well infused into the dish that I couldn’t complain. And I may or may not have slurped all the sauces like it was a bowl of soup. The lau lau is on point as well. I got the pork lau lau and it was incredible! So yummy that I brought two cold ones to bring home. They’re a little small but it’s only $ 3! It’s on the saltier side so make sure you get that side of rice! Was not a huge fan of the lomi salmon, but I think it’s more of an acquired taste. I actually didn’t realize there was salmon in this tomato dish and thought it was just salsa until I was like 75% done with my meal. I just kept wondering what that odd flavor was haha! Prices are reasonable. Don’t come expecting a fancy restaurant. This no frills joint is quite the diamond in the rough! It looks like half of the place functions as a very island style home. Service is great! I came in with no idea what to get, and the owner/cook/server(?) asked how hungry I was and helped order me 2 combinations so I could try a little of everything. Will definitely be back for more laulau and kalua pork!

Yes – definitely go if you’re visiting the Kona side. Good local food, with a patient cook/manager/owner. Everything was good – the pork, the poi, lau lau, and fish, mac/potato salad. For me, this was a pleasant way to spend a lunch hour – talking to the owner/cook, watching the local deliverymen talk story with the owners, and watching local folks chow down on the best local food this side of Hilo.

Heard about this place and had to try it. The husband loves lau lau and kalua pork. It was a drive to get to the location and it was a rainy day. It was nice but scary but hey I’ve driven in worse. But to get some legit Hawaiian food I will drive. I came and ordered the lau lau and kalua. It was so delish. But as always to me kalua is always salty. I guess I don’t eat to much salty just sweet. But I still liked it. You can tell if it’s home made or store bought and this is totally home made. The lady that was working was friendly. But what Hawaiian isn’t. Love the locals here. Place has a small kine parking. Seems like a little cute town.
