Thick granite and huge waves Ram’s Ledge has been destroying ships and people for a long, long time. A treacherous place in any weather but especially nasty in storms, it was decided back in 1855 to do something about it. Unfortunately the something that they chose wasn’t very satisfactory, just a simple tower. It quickly washed away but it didn’t really matter because nobody could see it anyways. So in 1905 a real lighthouse was constructed. Made of huge blocks of locally quarried granite, this lighthouse wasn’t going anywhere. Monstrous waves sweep through here at times, often breaking over the top of the lighthouse so the granite blocks were definitely the right choice. The light is 77 feet tall and originally had a 3rd order Fresnel Lens. It was later automated and the lens removed. The light went up for public sale in 2010 and finally sold for 190,000 dollars. A cool place to own but getting in isn’t easy, the waves and currents out here are still treacherous and docking a boat can be challenging. A stark and ominous looking light that can be best seen by a boat but can also be seen from the Portland Head Lighthouse. This is a lighthouse that is going to be around for a long, long time.
