Being that this was our first trip to Texas Wine Country(November 2015) had fairly fairly low expectations for the quality and flavor profile of the wines. We were simply looking for a little getaway and a taste of the local culture. We didn’t read the reviews nor did we evaluate a number of other wineries before our visit. Needless to say we were incredibly delighted with the outcome our of haphazard decision after stepping foot inside the little cottage made from materials all naturally occurring and available on the property. The wine was delicious and the atmosphere delightful. Travis was a super helpful in learning more about the wines and we look forward to returning very soon!

One of the most beautiful wineries you will find in Texas! Very well done, it is a must see if you are anywhere close! The owner is a hoot, and the wines are very unique. This is the kind of place you could just sit at all day.

Go here. The wines are mostly made from grapes grown on the property by a gentleman who has studied wine making in California and France. Tasting is a good value, and the property and tasting room are gorgeous. If you like to taste and talk about fine wine, you will feel right at home. If you don’t know much about wine, but want a nice country drive and wines that appeal to a variety of tastes, check it out, too.

This is a delicious winery! All natural with no sulfites, preservatives, pesticide or added yeast. The wine felt fresh and was a delight! We left with three bottles and will be back next time we are in the area. Ryan was there to help out and we found him to be extremely helpful!

Im not into wineries. Hell, i dont even like wine that much to be honest, but my girlfriend really does. We drove over an hour from austin to try this place… and we struck gold. this place is like jester king, but for wine, and totally amazing Deep in the comal valley, the proprietor of this business owns 100 acres of beautiful hill country land. On the land he runs and operates a winery. Now this wine is different, and this is why i think i like it, its nothing like ive ever tasted(and i lived in southern france) The character of the wine is light, with bold flavor. Everything is done naturally, They dont even add yeast! its all natural fermentation. The proprietor himself is amazing. Hes totally crazy, but just crazy enough to make this somewhere i will absolutely return to in the future. It has a very personal feel when you are tasting the wine he made and bottled all by hand. The bottles to go are pricey, but hell, after we tried it we had to take some home. Overall this is the best. period. If you want a good unique experience and enjoy wine at all, try this out one weekend.

A natural and rustic atmosphere sitting in the valley with big bluffs surrounding the winery… Beautiful cozy setting! The wine maker doesn’t add sulfite a to the wine which makes this wine different yet delicious. Bring a deck of cards and don’t plan to be in a rush when you make the journey out because the owner is running the whole show and sometimes the little cottage fills up with thirsty wine sippers ;)

This place is wonderful. The owner is a great guy with a lot of good stories about his travels and his enjoyment of making naturally fermented wines. The taste testing is really average at $ 15 per person. This is waived if you buy minimum of 3 bottles. After taste testing these wines, we wanted to buy. My husband and I are not savvy wine drinkers but we know what tastes good. I am a big fan of the dessert wine. It has a classy name to it but of course I can’t remember at the moment. There are also new selections available in a short amount of time. Needless to say, my husband and I will be going back. We really enjoyed the experience.

OMG… what a hidden treasure in the Hill-country. My husband and I decided to take a drive and why not let’s see a winery. Well we googled winery’s and this was the first one that popped up. The vineyard was quaint, cute and the owner was so funny. I read his story and other articles in Texas Monthly and no disappointment and out of this world. His wines were to the tee of description. Robust with flavor and unique to the grape. Can’t wait to come back and bring friends.

I love everything about this place! It’s a hidden gem tucked away in the hills just south of Canyon Lake. Lewis, the owner, is a former big-time defense attorney in Houston who found his calling to be one with the grapes and wine. Listening to him wax poetically about what he’s doing differently at his vineyard gives you insight into what you’re about to experience. He’s also a hoot! Instead of using commercial yeast, the wines ferment from wild yeast/bacteria on the grapes and whatever bacteria is in the HillCo air. This gives the wines an obvious farmhouse character(mild funk/horsey, slightly sour). He doesn’t filter so the wines are a bit hazy and have some sediment/yeast on the bottom. Grapes are either grown on-site or purchased from farms in the Hill Country and they don’t add sulfites. If you like traditional wines, you might not enjoy the wines that much but I still think it’s worth a visit. Tasting: $ 15 for 6 samples Bottles: Range from $ 25-$ 60 Times: Tasting room is open on Sat and Sun from 12p-6pm. What we bought: a bottle of Rose. The tasting room is an adorable limestone building and the vineyard can be seen from the windows. If you can’t make it to the vineyard, Jester King Brewery just started carrying their wines in its taproom! It’s a match made in heaven! Wild yeast for everyone!

Stopped by with another couple and had a great time. If you want to learn about true Texas wine, you have to talk with Mr Dixon!

When visiting hill country wineries, this stop is a must. It’s not real easy to get to… easier with a GPS, but it’s beautiful once you get there. The vineyard is beautiful and the little stone building used for a tasting room emits strong smells of fresh cedar. If you didn’t know better, you’d think you had stumbled along a small family vineyard in France. Walk right in, pull up a chair at the tasting bar, and listen to stories that Louis the proprietor tells. You think you know a lot about wine until Louis ends up teaching you a whole lot more. You quickly learn that these wines are different from most others in Texas as they’re more authentic… the way wines should be made. The $ 15 tasting fee is a bit pricier than other wineries, as are the wines themselves; however, buy three bottles of wine and the tasting fee is waived. Also, you can really tell the difference in the wine quality that makes them more expensive. Plus, the conversations you can have with Louis have so much more value than the entertainment you’ll receive from other wineries where a 20-something kid pours your wine without knowing much about the wine. When finished, it’s difficult to get up and leave… you feel like you’ve left a good friend’s home rather than just another winery.

I went to La Cruz de Comal with some girlfriends and we had such a wonderful time. The owner Lewis, and his assistant Christine, were so welcoming, friendly, and fun! I absolutely loved the wines as some reminded me of the wines my husband and I enjoy when we travel to the California wine country. The ambiance of the tasting room is also not to be missed… so quaint and charming! We sipped on wines(and they gave us generous pours), while owner Lewis captivated our attention with stories of his wines, travels, and tasting room décor. All in all, really good time! Can’t wait to return and bring my husband.

At first we didn’t go; was it worth the drive? Yes, it was worth it for three reasons, plain and simple. One, all of the wines are made from grapes grown in Texas, mostly in this region. This is the main reason I wanted to try the wines. Almost all of the wineries in this area import grapes from out of state. Two, the wines are natural which means they are unfiltered and there are no additives, most importantly no sulfites were added. Regardless of your thoughts on the latter, if you have never tried unfiltered and natural wine, then you need to. The third reason is a result of the previous two: these wines are bold, complex and unique. I didn’t love every one. But each was unforgettable. If you love trying wine, then I strongly recommend drinking it as by itself. Then, try running it through an aerator. You could filter it yourself too. Also, try it with different foods. Five stars earned! It is such a treat to find a winery like this one in the Texas Hill Country.

Im going to prefaces this review by saying it deserves 5 stars but because it is a new business with only one other review, Unilocal kicks away too many 5 start reviews at first as they think ppl associated with the company are writing them. I assure you I am not associated with them though I wish I was. I am just a very satisfied customer who felt the need to spread the word of this amazing gem. Im going to keep this review short and sweet because as I am writing this I realize I could write a 10 page review on how spectacular it is. The wine is natural, organic and absolutely amazing, and all the grapes they use are from the vineyard onsite. They are unique, rustic and I cant reiterate how delightful they are so ill just keep it at that!!! The scenery/hills that surround the winery are breath taking and are worth the trip alone. The staff members and owner were some of the friendliest people I have come across in the canyon lake area. We’ve had a lake house in the area for over 6 years now and I am so happy La Cruz De Comal Wines has opened up!!! It is just what we needed in the area; a sophisticated high end gorgeous«retreat» to spend time with our visiting guests, or a way to spend a relaxing and romantic day with my honey. I will most def be back many times in the near future. Finally, if you are still questioning their product… they distribute to some of the best restaurants in Houston i.e.- Underbelly and Mockingbird Bistro to name a few.

The wines are delicious, unique and carefully crafted. Rustic and intimate tasting room, built from local stone and wood harvested on the property. The owner/wine maker is very knowledgeable, friendly and passionate about his wines. We loved this place. Although we showed up just 20 minutes before closing, we were never rushed. Will definitely return.
