I would normally avoid writing about a restaurant with 290 reviews. But after 10+ dinners and 20+ lunches with consistently great food and service, I feel compelled to commit my perspective to disk. I’ve never been disappointed at Twist; OK, maybe that one time they ran out of those killer sweet potato fries at lunch(Twist Café)… Appetizer Anyway, tonight, my wife and I ordered two $ 35 Prix Fixe meals; mine began with Oeufs en Meurette. The pinot noir poached eggs arrived deep red and served en croute. When combined with the slowly browned, rosemary accented onions, the eggs were transformed into a delicately spiced appetizer. That was the highlight of the meal for me. My wife had a salad with perfectly roasted vegetables. Entrée My main course was Mussels Meuniere; maybe 30 mussels organized into a sunflower pattern and served in a cream/curry/wine sauce. My wife loved it, I would have preferred a sauce with less cream and more wine, and maybe some roasted shallots? Anyway, she always appreciates the Steak Frites, around six ounces of perfectly cooked beef served with fries and sides of Bearnaise and a rich wine+stock reduction. My dessert was a soda fountain-sized glass of espresso ice cream; the ground espresso beans are visible and although I intended to just have a taste of it, I ended up eating it all. Wine The list is 35% French, 65% California, perhaps 65? wines. By the glass, they serve around a dozen; try the Cotes du Rhone or one of the Grenache blends. Service Our waiter knew the menu back to front, refilled my wife’s empty wine glass promptly, took our questions to the chef, understood how to be attentive but not overbearing, and even opened the door as we left. Gave him 20% but should have upped it. Rebuttals to one star reviewers: — Asking if you have a reservation(even if the restaurant is empty) is a courtesy, and should not be taken as an affront. — Three hours after my meal, I’m still full. If you are disappointed by the number of entrees or the non-Flintstone portion size, please visit Hometown Buffet or Dennys. They have a much broader selection of giant entrees. And their chairs are nice and wide.

I was really looking forward to trying Twist — I love French food, and this place uses mostly organic and local food, which made me very happy. We came here for dinner tonight. When we sat down, they brought out a little dish of carrots in a mustard vinaigrette, which was quite nice. They also brought out bread, which was… well, it was just American white bread. It was a little disappointing, as we were expecting real, crusty, French baguette. I ordered the Twist salad to start, and that was fantastic. It was an organic greens salad with some grilled vegetables, and a lovely dressing — perfect. The first disappointment was that I really wanted to try the Beef Bourguignon, but they were out. The second disappointment is that their menu is very limited — I think they had maybe 6 or 7 entrees total. Since there wasn’t any other entrée on the menu that looked appealing to me, I ended up ordering the French Onion Soup and the Ratatouille side dish as my entrée. My BF ordered the red snapper. The onion soup was — fine. It was a little bland, and the cheese on top was just melted, not browned, which is the way I prefer it. The ratatouille was VERY bland. Just a bunch of mushy vegetables on a small plate. The red snapper itself was fine, but also under-seasoned, like almost everything else we had. It came with a sauce that I liked, but my BF thought the fish and the sauce were both pretty bland. We also had the side of fries, which were — like everything else, fine. Not great. Service was also fine, although they forgot about my BF’s wine, and we had to stop our server to ask her where it was after waiting for about 10 minutes, and we also had to ask for the check after we’d been sitting there waiting for it for a while. All in all, dinner was a disappointment, especially when you take the price into account. I’m tempted to go back one more time to try the Beef Bourguignon… but after this experience, I’m not sure it would be worth it.

This restaurant could have easily been rated 3 ½ — 4 stars… very disappointing. I have eaten at the bistro, as well as, the restaurant portion. ((BISTRO)) A very nice French bistro that caters to the lunch crowed. They have a variety of unique lunch sandwiches. My favorite is the meatloaf sandwich. There was only one server to take care of the masses and she was very friendly and efficient. ((RESTAURANT)) I went here for Valentines Dinner(2011). The food was very good, especially the carrot/ginger soup that was served cappuccino style. The service wasn’t spectacular… I would say adequate. At the end of dinner, I went to remove my jacket and I saw a cockroach climb down my chair and another one run across the floor(in the primary dining area). There is no excuse for any dining establishment that is open for business and has cockroaches. I will never eat there again.

Oliana, the hostess, was super nice! I was early to meet my party so she took my coat(and re-assured me she’d remember to give it to me so I don’t forget it) and welcomed me to the bar while I waited. For dinner, I had the DELICIOUS seared Foie Gras which I only wish there was more of, then had the panchetta wrapped scallops which were perfectly seared and cooked. Nothing worse than overcooked, rubbery scallops, which thankfully I did not experience here. As we rushed out to get to the Al Jarreau concert down the street at the Heritage theater, Oliana was there waiting at the door with my coat already! She definitely set the stage for a great dinner, Thank you!

It’s hard for me to read some of these very inaccurate reviews. Some complaints seem really off. oh ya, it’s Unilocal. Not everything on Unilocal is true. Casual environment with not so casual food. A very nice husband and wife run the Bistro & café(which has amazing croissant breakfast sandwiches) — a small business with lots of heart and soul. Service has always been warm and inviting, or maybe it’s just my luck. Twist offers amazing meals at reasonable prices AND this thing called QUALITY. Found Twist by celebrating Bastille Day here2 years ago and have returned on select occasion when in the South Bay. I hit up Twist for an awesome meal and have recommended it to several very appreciative friends. I should have Unilocaled them much sooner, c’est la vie. Today it is! For those on a budget, get your derrière there between 5 – 6 Tues-Thurs for a $ 20 happy hour dinner special — main course with a yummy salad or decadent dessert AND a glass of wine. Wildly cheap. Plus on any night — $ 35 for 3 course dinner — your choice of an appetizer, entrée & dessert. Regular menu appetizer Steak Tartar is delicious and«If it’s not fresh, I won’t do it» is actually printed on the menu. Damn I love French bluntness. Eggs Meurette here are fantastic & the mussels soup is a must. I’m a huge fan of the way Chef Dominiue prepares any fish. His Portobello Napoleon seriously speaks to my soul. I don’t know exactly how the conversation goes, but it speaks somehow and makes my palate quite pleased. Also highly recommend Dominique’s cheese platter for dessert. Recently remodeled I’ve heard… They’ve changed or are going to change up TWIST to add French Tapas and more of a lounge environment. Looking forward to this and I’m certainly hopeful the special theme nights continue because they get sold out for a reason. «A Twisted Dungeness Crab Dinner» this Wednesday January 19th features Aspic of Dungeness Crab, Chervil & Wasabi Tobiko, Cappuccino Dungeness crab bisque, Parpadelle Pasta, Dungeness Crab, Tarragon Sauce, Let’s crack the Crab, Ginger Cilantro Mayonnaise and for dessert Charlotte of Pear & Warm Chocolate $ 40/person not inclusing tax & gratuity“ Yes i cut and pasted that from their newsletter for those who care :) Bön Appetit

Came here midweek with my fiancée for a quick bite. I’m a huge fan of French Food, so I was excited to try this new place out which happened to be right across the street from Cardiff and in Campbell, two of my favorite spots in the South Bay. A smaller restaurant with a bar and small kitchen all easily visible from the seating area. White table cloths, but I didn’t get the impression this was too fancy; certainly a casual atmosphere. Our server was a taller and somewhat funny man with a good personality; forget his name exactly. Seemed to have a real family/small feel to it and the chef had a thick French accent. Started out with some drinks and we both were satisfied. My California Syrah was $ 10 a glass and was excellent; I actually ordered another while I was there right before our food arrived. The champagne concoction was also well enjoyed. We opted for no appetizer, even though the foie gras was calling my name. For the main course, we had Scallops with Pancetta and Brussel Spouts and the Idaho Trout Soufflé. Both of these are apparently on the winter 2011 menu(the fall 2010 menu is still online). I noted that the menu did not change much since the last season. The menu was not too adventurous and I wasn’t too impressed at that point. The flatware was twisted at the end encompassing the theme of the restaurant; certainly flirting on the cheesy side of things. The Soufflé was served with a field greens salad with a balsamic vinegarette dressing. I thought the dressing was a fail job and not good at all, but my fiancée enjoyed it. Oh well, to each her own. The dish did not seem to be much of a Soufflé to me at all. Was left rather confused. Forget what other unmemorable side dish there was on the plate. The fish was served with a salmon sauce atop. Both the fish and sauce were very average; certainly terrible considering the $ 24 price for the dish. I actually ordered this dish but quickly traded with my table mate as we each were not a fan of ours. The trade for me was in turn the scallops w/pancetta and brussel spouts. Portion size was laughable. 3 – 4 big meaty pancetta wrapped scallops and a weak portion of brussel spouts. The scallops were cooked quite well and the dish was probably 3.5÷5. Nothing too great in flavor, but I was satisfied at the same time. Certainly not worth the $ 25 price tag attached to it. The service was pretty shotty once our main order was taken. Our server didn’t ask how we were doing and I had to flag someone else down to get another glass of wine. It’s like he didn’t care anymore or knew the food was mediocre for the price and portion. The poor experience was solidified with eye contact by our server on the walk out with no acknowledgement, «goodbye» or «thank you.» Maybe he knew we wouldn’t be back, who knows?

My boyfriend wanted to try this place because he loves foie gras, but unfortunately they only had the Duck Foie Gras Terrine«Maison,» which was their cold appetizer. He said it was one of the worst ones he had. I started off with the crab and avocado salad with curry oil. While the taste was good, the plating sucked. It came out on a rectagular plate, mixed green salad with a balsamic vinegarette dressing, and had the crab and avocado salad in the halves of the avocado skin. While using the avocado skin is somewhat creative, I didn’t like that it was on top of my salad greens because who knows how dirty the outside of an avocado is. It was also garnished with waffle chips, which I could tell weren’t fried fresh. How could I tell? Because they weren’t crispy and the coloring was unappetizing. My main dish was the pork chop with roquefort sauce and mashed potatoes. My pork chop was cooked perfectly, and the sauce was awesome! My plate was practically clean once I was done. For dessert, my boyfriend and I shared the chocolate mousse, which was nicely done. Overall, I would not come to eat here again.

Ordered the Hanger steak and Duck A La Orange. Ambiance is small town fancy restaurant with candles lit and a bar. Happy hour allows I believe 3 course dinner with glass of wine for $ 20 or $ 30.( coupon not able to get happy hr special) French bread served with butter, bread was fresh from oven and crunchy moist and delicious. Hanger steak we got medium rare but it came out medium no biggie I don’t mind medium. The slices of steak were moist, juicy and delicious. The french fries that also came with this dish are the best I’ve had. So fresh and semithin style, you’d be crazy if you didn’t kill it. Duck A La Orange, was good but if you are used to roasted duck at chinese restaurant this duck is nothing like that. The restaurant cut up a few slices on the side and then there was a breast and leg. The meat was good but it tasted like any other meat. Some fatty skin was left on too. The orange sauce was sweet and delicious. The duck came with I believe freshly made wrinkled potato chips(I felt was a little salty). Customer service was very good, attentive. & Passport card have mandatory tip of either 18% or 20% I forget at this moment. Split orders also have another charge it’s at the bottom of the menu.

The Onion soup was the highlight of the meal. Not perfect — it came out suspiciously quickly, and the cheese wasn’t quite freshly browned, but great flavors. If the whole meal was at this level, it would easily be a four star place. Or better. The other highlight was the cheese soufle. A little light on the goat cheese — could have used a little more bite — but overall quite satisfying. And the salad it came with was nice. The side of asparagus was middling — some spears were nicely done and some were massacred. The portobello napolean was bland. Even the extra vinegar on the plate didn’t wake it up. Not bad but nothing interesting. The stinker was the profiteroles: the cream was super cold and really more like ice cream, and the pastry had been sitting for far too long in a refrigerator. The chocolate was not bad. You’re going to find a better rendition of this dish in the freezer section of trader joes. Sorry, we couldn’t even finish it. Friendly staff, a little slow but that’s the right pace for a place like this — though it was funny that the soup came out 3 minutes after ordering, and the entrée was 20 minutes behind the soup. Luckily: Nice ambiance. Good setup. AND: Not too loud. You can actually have a conversation. I cannot emphasize how nice that is. That’s a major plus and almost worth another star. On a cold night try to sit very far from the door — there is nothing between you and a lot of cold air as people walk in and out. Will we go back? I don’t know. Even though the Left Bank is more pretentious, they get more of the flavors right, too. Twist feels more authentic, and like you are in a family-owned and run place. But the food is pretty flat.

For a supposedly nice French-American restaurant, I was quite disappointed tonight with our dinner. We were here couple of Valentine’s Days ago(2007) and had a wonderful time with a great meal. However, this time the experience was quite different and not what we remembered. The blonde waitress didn’t introduce herself. For a nice French restaurant, service wasn’t very professional. Then she told us to not use the flash on our camera, because another patron complained of us. We complied, but I personally didn’t like how she delivered her reproach. She swung by to tell us… and not in a nice way… almost like she’s looking down at us. Didn’t get a good vibe. I didn’t realize that it was Silicon Valley restaurant week. So I decided to try out the prixe fixe menu to sample their foods. I started off with frog legs provencale. They were okay but the legs tasted like they’ve been soaked in sea water. I don’t think the legs were totally fresh. It’s not that I’m frog leg expert, but there’s something about those legs that just didn’t taste all that fresh. The menu said that the frog legs would come with greens(maybe I was mistaken), but only the sauce was green. I chose the smoked trout as my entrée. The fish was grilled and smoked on a piece of wood, which was really nice since it rendered some crispy skin. However, the salad on the plate was WAY too SALTY. I never add salt to my salad, but I know they do here(in high quantity). When I asked the waitress, she told me it was due to caper dressing. I didn’t really taste capers, but I did taste plain white salt on my greens. So the kitchen brought out new batch of salad w/NO dressing, and it was STILL salty. The basmati rice accompaniment(possibly jasmine rice) was the best part of the dish, because it wasn’t doused in salt but just butter. I chose the chocolate mousse as my dessert. The waitress wasn’t too familiar with the menu, because she couldn’t recall that I had a choice of mousse, ice cream, sorbet, or cheese platter. She left out the ice cream. The mousse wasn’t too bad. However, I didn’t like how the waitress didn’t introduce to my husband the platter of cheese(3). We had to guess what they were. Typically in nice restaurants, the server tells us the types of cheese on the platter as he/she is serving it. This time, it was just delivered and that was that. We tried to figure on our own, but it would’ve been nice if she did actually serve it. The menu states«A voyage to the cheese country.» It that’s actually the case, we got lost because we didn’t have a guide. Overall, I don’t know if they suspected that we’re Unilocalers and thus came for the SV Restaurant Week, which I thought restaurants actually wanted to be part of. Maybe not. This restaurant definitely didn’t want our business, it seemed. We did use our certificate at the end. I’m glad we didn’t pay full price. I mostly wouldn’t come back unless someone else invited us out to dinner/lunch. It’s out of the way for us, so the food and service had better be worth the drive. It didn’t meet our expectations tonight. I’m very sad, because I love French cuisine.

This place is really cute. Not incredibly fancy(the tablecloths are not actually cloth… they are paper). But the service was great! Escargot was so yummy! My lamb was delicious. I don’t want to know how many calories were in the sauce, but it was so worth it. My boyfriend had rabbit and said it was a bit chewy, but the portion was generous. We also had the raspberry soufle. It was overpriced and I wasn’t that impressed.(Maybe I was just too full to enjoy it). This is a place, so get a gift certificate before you go to save a few bucks.

Big round of applause for Twist Bistro! My BF and his friend took me here on Saturday night before we hit the movies and I have to tell you that this pretty little place is such a nice addition to Campbell and a I was very pleasantly surprised. The menu is deliberate and clean. You have a smaller amount of items offered, but it is because of this that you know you are getting items that are in season, and fresh.(Think about it too many items to choose from = too many items sitting in a cooler waiting to be ordered). I ordered the Lamb Shank and I have never seen a bigger shank than the one in front of me. I thought«how on earth am I going to eat all this?» But… eat it I did. I couldn’t get enough! It was succulent, tender, and so flavorful and the veggies were perfectly charred and complimented the smooth Lamb Shank perfectly. We ordered a bottle of wine and after our waitress poured it for the three of us it slipped from her hand. But… without hesitation she returned with another«full» bottle and left it on the table. I’m sure after she poured the 3 glasses there was very little in the bottle anyway, but bringing us a full bottle after she dropped the 1st was an amazing gesture on behalf of the restaurant! The only downer was that they don’t offer a full bar(hopefully that is coming soon) but certainly not one to lose a star for! You still get my 5!!! I highly recommend Twist! Go there and see for yourself. Cheers!

The over all experience was positive. Food: Pretty good Servie: Decent Price: Slightly too high Atmosphere: intimate and not too loud CANBECROWDED — the place is popular One thing true about the other reviews — the French Onion soup is pretty weak. But the entrees made up for that so I will go back and just skip the soup. Stay tuned for an update…

My bf took me here for dinner when I was on one of my regular visits with him in his area. Gotta say, I really enjoyed the carrots they brought out with this delicious slightly sweet sauce they were covered in. The fresh baguette with butter was awesome as well. I ordered a simple pasta dish with seafood, can’t complain. Perfectly yum! The service was impeccable, and I loved how most of the waiters had a French accent, very sexy! The place is quite small but got busy pretty quick for dinner time. So definitely make reservations if you want to dine here for dinner.

We made reservations through opentable for Friday night — we arrived a bit early to see if we could get seated, otherwise we were gonna grab gelato while we waited; however, they seated us even though we were early. Interestingly, instead of seating us in the restaurant, they seated us in the adjacent café where 2 other couples were seated. The environment in the café was a stark contrast to that of the restaurant — I don’t think the heat was on and the mexican music and employees doing dishes on the other side of the wall divider that they had put up were pretty distracting. Nevertheless, we carried on with our dinner and enjoyed each other’s company, but sadly not the food. I ordered the french onion soup($ 9.25) and was underwhelmed by it’s lack of taste once you break through the gruyère cheese and would not recommend this dish to others. I also ordered the goat cheese soufflé($ 11) and that was better but still not great. Overall, between the food and the atmosphere it was a disappointing experience — there’s really nothing«french» about Twist Bistro and we definitely won’t be returning.

This is a small, narrow resturant with zero waiting area. We arrived a few minutes before our reservation and the host was very friendly and said our table would be read in 5 minutes so we grabbed a drink at the bar and waited for our dinner guests to arrive. As they walked in the door, our table was ready. Okay, this was strike one for me. We were seated in the last table at the very back of the resturant, right next to the restroom. Srike one. The menu was simple and everything sounded yummy. We passed on getting an app. since the dinner plates sounded so rich. One of our guests ordered the house salad which looked pretty good. I ordered the pork loin with riquefort sauce and mashed potatoes. OMG! I literally licked my plate clean. My husband got the hanger steak and fries. He said he wasn’t impressed and really didn’t eat much of his dinner. I taisted his steak and thought is was really good. Maybe he just wasn’t in the mood for steak? Actually, I think seeing the fries instead of a baked potato was a turn off for him. Whatever. The couple we came with ordered the Beef Bourguignon which she loved and the salmon which he said was good however I taisted it and the small piece I had was dry and had bones in it. Not impressed. Would I return? Probably not unless I had a craving for the pork tenderloin. Nothing else seemed to jump out at me an the resturant as a whole was a little to noisy and prices were somewhat high for an «okay» experience. But who knows, maybe I’ll try lunch here in the summer when I can sit on the patio.

After a long work weekend in the area, I found myself at Twist on two separate occasions. The first visit was to Twist Café, which is open for lunch. I had a simple soup there and enjoyed a snack before it closed at 3 pm. I subsequently returned to Campbell in the evening. Having read a newspaper article describing downtown Campbell as the«gem» of the Bay Area, I figured I’d walk around, have dinner, and check the place out. Despite working nearby, I had rarely been to downtown Campbell at night. *Note: that newspaper article stated downtown Campbell was a great night spot if your age does not begin with a 2. In many ways, the article was right. Strolling through the area, I was greeted by music from an outdoor singer with his decent rendition of Jason Mrarz’s «I’m Yours,» more tunes from a quality guitarist a few blocks down, and finally, several works of art being painted by locals along the sidewalk. At the very least, Campbell had a quaint and pleasant feel and it’s clear the City is trying to have a night life. That’s more than can be said for downtown San Jose. Twist Bistro was our chosen stop. I had seen the name many times on Unilocal so knew that dinner would probably be solid. The place was packed solid at 7 pm and we were told the wait would be about 20 minutes. Finding ourselves with time on our hands, we actually strolled to the Olive Bar. A very unique and pleasant experience and I recommend stopping by if you like Olive Oil. But back to Twist Bistro… When we returned, we were seated promptly and quickly ordered. The menu is a straightforward one page affair and contains many classic, French and American dishes. Our order: French Onion vegetarian soup — rich and brothy, their version was made without beef stock. Surprisingly, it was no less tasty and the onions were done to perfection. The amount of cheese was generous but not overwhelming. Sea Scallops — the sauce was quite good. The scallops were a bit smaller than I had anticipated and were also slightly overcooked. Nonetheless, the sauce and the accompanying risotto topped off a solid dish. Hanger steak with french fries — the french fries were great, although I guess it’s hard to mess up french fries. The hanger steak was done perfectly as well, nicely medium rare as requested. The portion was a bit smaller than I had anticipated but I was full by the end. We finished the night with a nice order of mango ginger soufflé. Twist Bistro was a nice dining experience as expected from the Unilocal reviews. The food was tasty and well prepared. For me, the onion soup was a stand out whereas the entrees were more just solid dishes. Just fyi, most entrees are $ 22 and above, so Twist Bistro is not cheap. For two, with an appetizer each and one dessert, we spent about $ 50/person. While I enjoyed the quaint and nice feel of downtown Campbell, I thought the prices were slightly high for the area and more in line with overpriced downtown Palo Alto. Twist Bistro(and Café) gladly take credit cards, including American Express.

I had such a great experience here this weekend, I had to write an update! Even though we hadn’t been here in a few months«D» remembered us, and even brought over a complimentary glass of kir for my fiancé and I. I hadn’t had it before, and really liked it. They were out of what I planned to order, and I was a bit disappointed, but… I ended up loving my dinner!!! I had the seafood grill,(and they were nice enough to put the sauce on the side for me) it was fan-freaking-tastic! i had been off scallops for quite awhile, but the ones that came with this were so amazing. Another thing worth updating was the service. In the past it has been a bit uneven, but it was great on our last visit. It was ideal weather for sitting outside, and I found out we can bring our pooch next time. I think he might like a hanger steak… This is such a jewel in our downtown. I can’t recommend it enough… but I don’t want it to get so busy we can’t get in…

I’ve had this place bookmarked for awhile now and finally I got to try it with my husband and my in-laws. Sadly, I wasn’t that impressed. The carrot sticks with the dijon dressing was tasty. We were trying to figure out what was in the dressing because it tasted like there was a hint of wasabi in it but after reading some of the other reviews that it was dijon, it made sense. We all malled on the warm baguette. We are bread people so when warm bread heads our way, we just cannot resist. My father-in-law and I ordered the Steelhead Trout on Herbs, Garden Salad per the server’s recommendation. My mother-in-law ordered the seafood skewers, while my husband ordered the Hanging Tender Steak with French Fries. We also ordered the Baked Roasted Garlic with appetizers but somehow, there was some confusion and it never came out. The Steelhead Trout tasted like salmon to me. The garden salad was a bit soggy from the dressing and too salty for my taste. Luckily, the rest of my family enjoyed their dishes. I left feeling just unimpressed by the food. Sorry Twist Bistro. I’m sure you have lots of other dishes that you’re known for but you just aren’t for me!

I took my boyfriend here on his 29th birthday. He’s getting old. Anyway, we enjoyed it from the start and the French host/main waiter is funny and friendly. He takes the reservations and remembered by name! He offered us a «romantic» table in the back that was a bit more quiet, but we wanted to sit at a table near the bar we were waiting at since it was more lively. They had all sorts of pink champagne and rose wines and the bar hostess is lovely. The restaurant has a family feel with some elegance. The waiters are obliging to take pictures(always a plus!). The escargot came in this ceramic plate with small quarter size dips for each of the pieces, which were dipped in green sauce that you find at Pasta Pomodoro in their oil for the bread(do you know what I’m talking about?). I had the Wellington and it is basically a steak in a sleeve for chicken pot pie. It was pretty good and the prices were reasonable. My boyfriend had the hangar steak with french fries. Not bad, but mine was better. For dessert, we had the trio of coffee, chocolate, and vanilla crème brûlée. I would definitely come back. Can’t wait!
