Have you experienced the wonders of a «roach coach?» That’s what my coworkers and I called the truck that pulled up every morning outside the warehouse with its promise of hot sub-par coffee and cockroaches climbing over the frozen Jimmy Dean Sausage Biscuits ripe for microwaving. I miss those meals on wheels, which is why I was delighted to spot a big white van parked outside the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School on Broadway. Don’t let the long line of students ordering BBQ fries dissuade you, for an incredibly cheap meal awaits. The menu is larger than I expected, with sandwiches averaging $ 3 each and fries at $ 2. I ordered the enticing Chix & Cheese Combo, a fried chicken cutlet with fries and soda for just $ 5, but alas, the Chix was sold out. In its place I was offered a grilled chicken sandwich with cheese and bacon. The two guys running the van were quick with the orders and informed me they park here when school’s in session from 10 to 2, and then drive down to the MIT campus(I think they said 22 Mass Ave) to do a dinner stint from 6 to 10. With no place to sit without my creepy factor going through the roof, I carried the greasy white combo box back to work. The fries are salty, and by salty I mean a can of Morton’s with every order. Plus, there were about 10 poor white limp fries who obviously hadn’t swam in the frialator long enough. The sandwich, however, was delicious. Crisp bacon, chunky tomato, lettuce, a hint, I think, of mayo, and two big pieces of chicken. It was fairly large, too, for $ 5. 5 stars for revisiting my past, and no frills, or roaches, on this coach – just quick lunch for the kids.
