We stopped in after a weekend of fossil hunting and were pleasantly surprised with how taste everything was. The building is small so the dining area is not large but it does not feel overly crowded. The staff is so sweet and they take good care of you. If you need to wash up or use the toilet just let the ladies know and they will direct you through the kitchen to the restroom. Two thumbs up for the patty melt.

The Hilltop Drive-in is a nice little stop when in the area. All of the ice cream here is good. They have a mean caramel shake. I cannot say I have ever had the actual food here, but it looks tasty for a little place like this, and they have a nice, small seating area inside.

Best tenderloin ever!!! This unassuming old-school(still) dairy freeze has the best hand breaded tenderloin in the state!!! Anyway, the best I have EVER had in my life! Haven’t lived around here in over 20 years and it still tastes the best.

The previous time I stopped at this place, they were closed for their daughter’s wedding, so the service was a bit slow. I was over at Lincoln High School photographing track and field and I decided to try again, although past 7 p.m., I wasn’t sure whether they’d be open this early in the season. There are a lot of these tiny places that require you to sit in your car to eat but Hilltop has an enclosed dining room with a few tables. It was crazy busy, and I really wasn’t sure how things worked, so I stood at the inside window for a while. After dealing with the crush of earlier customers outside, a woman came over to help me. I told her about the wedding sign that was there on my previous visit, and she said«That was my daughter’s wedding. We’ll blame it on her.» as a joke. :-D I couldn’t find a menu at the window – apparently, you’re supposed to sit down and look at the menu at the table. I hadn’t seen any waiter/waitress while I was waiting, so that didn’t seem a good bet. In any case, I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich, seasoned fries, and a medium chocolate malted – $ 7.80 total. The sandwich and fries were inexpensive so the chocolate malt must have been a bit expensive. Still, compared to the chain restaurants where you might not get something good, I didn’t feel bad at all. The same woman who took my order brought out the malt. I’m not sure what happened but there was a cup inside the cup and she said not to separate them. It was so thick – the malt, not the cup – that I had to use the spoon she gave me for quite a while. It was also good enough to remind me of childhood. The grilled cheese and seasoned fries were also very good. I normally would eat them with soda(or what people here often call«pop») but it didn’t seem right going to a place that served ice cream – even if I have a cow’s milk allergy. The whole experience was good and the friendly people there made it enjoyable. If there was a drawback, it was so busy that they hadn’t cleaned the tables, and you might not find a table at all. While they had some benches outdoors, there were no tables out there.

This is one of those nostalgic restaurants I’ve primarily visited with my dad… but unlike ones like Stout’s in Liberty(rest in peace, awesome biscuits and gravy), the Hilltop is still open and thriving. Their tiny dining room is usually packed, but we hardly ever have trouble finding a seat and I don’t think we’ve ever had bad service. I always get the coney dog and seasoned fries, and a chocolate-raspberry sundae if I’m feeling really wild(and not completely full). This is one of the few restaurants in Cambridge City, which might be of interest to antiquers who need a break from bargain hunting. They do only take cash, so be advised.
