We had a leak in our roof, and contacted Robert Steele of Master Contracting to come to the house and give us an estimate for repairs. The estimate was $ 750. We accepted the estimate and hired him that day. We told him it was an emergency, but still we had to wait several days for him to show up. When he did show up to perform the work, he was there for no more than 15 minutes, but still collected $ 750 from us. The totality of the work he performed included removing old flashing and putting in new flashing, then coating it with some kind of epoxy. No shingles were replaced, even though it was quoted in the estimate. Materials could not have cost more than $ 100, so we paid $ 650 for 15 minutes of his time. The next time it rained, the leaking was worse than before. We called to ask him to come back out; we left a VM for him. In his VM recording, he says he «always returns phone calls.» We did not hear back from him, so we had to call a second time and send an email, which finally prompted a response. He complained that he had to give up his personal time to come back to the house. He put off the repair, citing he had«other customers.» It was clear that since he had already collected payment from us, and that he would not be able to collect anything further, he was not in a hurry to fix the leak that was letting water into our house. When he finally came back to the house, a week later, to make another attempt to fix the leak, he only performed half of the work we asked him to do. We called him later that night and insisted he come back out the next day to finish it properly. He was argumentative and combative and seemed drunk on the phone. Again he complained that he would have to take his own personal time to fix it. He came out the next day after we threatened legal action, but failed to fix the leak. We have given up asking him to help us at this point. He gave us an estimate for a fix he never delivered, and we’re out $ 750. Don’t let this happen to you! Find another roofer to do your work. This guy is one of those contractors who will fleece you if he can, do shoddy work and have a combative attitude toward you if you have any problems with him.
