We live close to Asheville, on the north side. We have been going to Boone, NC on a very regular basis since 2005, when son began college at ASU. Then, our youngest child began at ASU in the fall of 2007. Both children now live in the Boone area. Today is Sept. 5, 2014… and they are still working on the same roads as in 2005! Today was the worst. We were supposed to have a family dinner at 6PM. Due to construction, we were held up in traffic for at least 35 minutes. I’m not saying the businesses in this small town are bad, but travel from one end of town to the other is horrific!!! And the road work is nowhere near complete!!! My suggestion is to do what we did on the way back home tonight… come through Marion and Old Fort and dodge a big travel nightmare bullet. For us, it was 7 miles longer and a lot less stressful!

I like old towns like this with a big grassy square, a monument to some historical dude named Burns, and some neat shops. It has a quilt shop on the square, some churches, an old historic inn that Elvis stayed at, a coffee house, some galleries, and a few places to eat that nook neat. Worth a stop if you are traveling through, but not a destination unless you are going for some big hiking at Mt. Mitchell or some of the other great outdoors places it has nearby. I’d stop here again.
