Kumon Math and Reading Center of Burbank – West

My little brother has been coming here for a few months now and is slowly but surely becoming more independent in his studies. I commend his confidence to this program. The workers are friendly and if they see him struggling they immediately help him. Jenna, who runs the center, is an absolute gem and truly cares for the success of each student. I highly recommend this program.

The Kumon Burbank West Center is incredible. My two kids have been going to the Center for the past year and they love it. Yes, love it! I know it’s weird to think that kids would enjoy doing additional work, but my kids have had such a great time learning and being supported at this center that they truly miss going when we take a vacation one week per year.
The Center Director, Jena, is tremendous. She is so caring and supportive of all of the kids in the Center. It is encouraging to meet with her and discuss how my kids are doing as they move forward in the program. Her encouragement is felt on a daily basis with how quickly she responds to emails and how she addresses any concerns I may have. Thank you, Jena.
The instructors are fabulous. Some parents may not understand this when they first start Kumon (I didn’t), but Kumon’s goal is to get your children to be independent learners and thinkers. It may seem weird for someone to come to a Kumon Center only to see more than half the kids working on their own. Some would think «why is my kid not being tutored». As a former high school math teacher and current administrator at a law school, I can assure you our kids do not need more tutors. They need to have the level of motivation and confidence to independently tackle a difficult problem in their school work and later in life. The Kumon I have experienced (Kumon West Burbank) has helped my two kids become more independent with their school work. To give you an example, my son is 4 years old so he still works with the instructors in front of the room (when you enter the building). He asked me the other day «daddy, when can I go to the back of the room and do the pages on my own». I realized then that he already is starting have the desire to do this work on his own.
For parents who are thinking about Kumon, some recommendations/​suggestions. My first recommendation is to not view Kumon as tutoring. Kumon is not tutoring. If you would like a one on one tutor, go get a tutor. Second, for parents who have young kids, ages 3 — 5 years old, I would highly recommend you start Kumon with them before they start Kindergarten. My first child started January of her Kindergarten year and my son started when he was 3.5 years old. They both love it because they never saw Kumon as «tutoring». They weren’t coming to the Center because they were not performing well in school — they were coming to Kumon because we’ve tried to develop a culture of learning at home. It has now become a habit and my kids would never want me to take them out of it. My last recommendation is that parents have to commit. The Kumon commitment is not just for your kids, you need to commit to grading their work and seeing where the additional help may be needed. Is it difficult? A little. Have my kids benefited from my wife and I committing to the program in this way? ABSOLUTELY!
Lastly, I visited several Kumon Centers before we finalized our enrollment with Jena. By far, this center had the best environment for my kids. Always friendly, always supportive, and always focused on their success! Thank you Jena and instructors.

Complete waste of time! The tutors do not teach the students anything. All they do is hand out packets and check for incorrect answers. Not once did anyone sit with my child explain what they were doing wrong or right. No one on one lessons. My kids developed bad habits during the time they were there. Not sure how the other Kumon facilities run their program but the one on Verdugo Blvd. in Burbank is a waste. When I tried to cancel they took my money for another month & ½. There are much better programs out there!

My two kids (Elementary) have been going to Kumon for almost a year and they have improved their grades, and their concentration a lot. Jena is great, and their instructors are very helpful. I think Kumon has an amazing program. It is a little bit hard for parents and kids to keep the right track of the homework everyday (Monday to Sunday — Monday and Thursday, Kumon is done in their facilities, and the rest of the days it is done at home). I think at the end it will completely worth it; highly recommendable.

Great place to give your child a head start in school. The program seem to be very structured and my kids have done very well in school because of it. This facility is open Monday’s and Thursday’s. The rest of the week your child is assigned homework. I would recommend Kumon for any child about to enter elementary school. Oh and very inexpensive 120.00 per subject Math/​English.
