This is a follow up to my 2010 review. I just ate at an event catered by the Torches guys at the Garage Deli right next door. The appetizers were terrific! We had caprese pipettes, prosciutto wrapped marscarpone stuffed peaches, and crawfish cakes among many other tasty vittles. Our entrée was delicious as well — a smoked porchetta stuffed with sausage and conrbread stuffing and a mustard pan gravy. Are you kidding me? The chefs are clearly having a ton of fun creating the combinations and utilizing the outdoor cooking spaces including the chevy corvair smoker parked in front of the restaurant as well as the back patio. I’m still a fan of this place. Awesome atmosphere & creative cooking. Go there with an open mind and enjoy!

While delving deep into the virtual world co-existing in a parallel plane with our own physical reality I stumbled across some very distressing news harolded by our hallowed Buffalo News Food Critic Andrew«no one knows how to pronounce my last name» Galarneau that J.J. Richert owner of Torches was selling his restaurant! Say it ain’t so… say it ain’t so. I understand the rationale, I mean he has a successful BBQ joint in N.T., sandwich shop and catering business, but for the gastronomic fan boy Torches is… well allow me to quote myself in a previous review of Torches…“the apotheosis of comfort food.” No Chef in Buffalo(I’m not counting James Roberts until he opens Toutant) juxtaposes such high brow and low brow as well as J.J. Richert. He has made an Art of utilizing middle class American pantry staples like Tim Horton’s coffee grounds, ginger snaps and goldfish making gourmet creations of the same. By way of example I once ordered Steak Frites where the fries were coated in dried Mac & Cheese Powder. How about the meatloaf with piped potatoes where he stuck in Cool Ranch Doritos in a gyrating pattern. He also has a mind-blowing ability to effectively utilize flavors from a wide-variety of culinary genres. These skills are exactly what makes my dusty, Quentin Tarantino«Like a Virgin» palate quiver.(if you missed that one watch Reservoir Dogs). However that genius does not peek through in his other entrepreneurial ventures and it is only through Torches that we can experience the depth of J.J.‘s skills. Side note… Torches also happens to be Wee Man’s(my 10 year old stepson’s) favorite high end restaurant; mostly for the desserts and table-side fireworks. With a heavy heart and a moist palate(see above) with my Wife and Wee Man in tow we made a trek to Kenmore to enjoy the final death throes of Torches, hoping to catch a glimpse of the culinary grandeur once contained therein in the hopes that J.J. has yet to throw in the bar rag and go out in the style of Big Night. I knew from the second I perused the menu that I was in for a real treat. The present incarnation of his menu featured mac and cheese stuffed porchetta with a lavender honey mustard sauce, or chicken cordon bleu with smoked ham and Lorainne Swiss. There were so many wonderful items that I just could not choose. It was also right about that time that Wee Man started to grumble that his stomach hurt… translation: I don’t see anything on the menu I like so I’m going to stuff myself on Root Beer and bread, and have an amazing recovery when it comes to dessert. Yet I digress… Normally, J.J. always started the meal with an amuse bouche, which he decided to forego that evening and hence my bouche was not amused… however, it is a gift of the Chef and I have no right to gripe. Yet my bouche was still amazingly unamused at that point. That was soon to change. My lovely Wife and I started with a jerk chicken drum, which was a jerk spiced chicken(roasted till sticky) drumstick served over a pineapple/mango salsa, with plantain chips and alternating roasted red pepper sauce, and sweet mango sauce. While that was wonderful the creole crawfish cake with gumbo was my favorite dish of the evening. I know NOLA cuisine, and for the most part, Buffalo does not do it any justice. This crawfish cake and gumbo could have come out of any of the great kitchens in N’awlins. The roux in the gumbo was deep chocolate brown and not a hint of bitterness. If I could have licked the plate I would(ok maybe I did… whatever it was late and the restaurant was empty… get off my back). So my lovely Wife ordered the ginger snap crusted salmon that evening with bbq sauce, fried onions and green beans, and she loved it. This dish is the exact reason that Torches is by far the superior restaurant to the Richert Brother’s BBQ joint. The salmon melded perfectly with this mild, BBQ sauce and fried onions creating his signature high brow/low brow mix. After much debate I opted for the seared scallops that evening. It was a gemelli pasta dish with sundried tomatoes and peas. WAIT one second Joe… that sounds far too boring for you. You are 100% correct… there was an M. Night Shyamalon twist. The pasta sauce was a microwave popcorn truffled cream sauce, and the dish was topped with popcorn for texture. F*cking A Right!!! That’s what I’m talking about b*tch!!! The«fake» butter flavor was the Perfect compliment to the bay scallops. J.J. is going out with a pop(so horrible… I’m sorry)! This is right about the time where Mr. Wee’s stomach AMAZINGLY got better and decided that he may be joining us for dessert… translation: I need to see the dessert menu first, then if there is something I like I’ll be all better. He got better. F*cking A… Unilocal gives me a word limit and I’m almost there so I’ll be brief. I loved it, Wife loved it, Mr. Wee loved it. Go there before it closes.

I went to Torches with friends. The waiter read the specials off of a tablet. I thought that was weird and over the top. I see no need for that. Print it on a piece of paper please! The restaurant was on the dark side. Also, the bathrooms where not working and we had to go outside and next door to use the bathroom. Anyway, I had the house salad(delicious) and the filet(also delicious), I have celiacs disease and can’t have gluten. Now I don’t expect restaurants to have a completely gluten free menu but there was little on this menu I could eat. I had to order the filet without the sauce. It was just disappointing. The martinis were terrible, I mean just awful. I had two different martinis. I don’t think I will be returning because there weren’t many choices for the gluten free diner.

I went to Torches for the first time last night. We wanted to go out for Local Restaurant Week in Buffalo, and we definitely picked the right place! My friends and I loved every single dish and were raving about it the entire night. The ambience was nice, dim lighting and light music. They even used the torch theme throughout by lighting the candle at the table in front of us with a torch, the napkins folded to look like a torch and lighting the crème brûlée at the table with a torch. Cute touch, I love small details like that– you can tell the restaurant really cares. The waitress and busser were excellent, attentive and helpful. The house salad, with candied walnuts, grapes, dried cranberries, warm goat cheese and a sherry vinaigrette dressing, was one of the best salads I have had in a while– especially for a house salad! My table tried 2 of the 3 options on the restaurant week menu. The shrimp scampi gnocchi was delicious and you could definitely tell the gnocchi was handmade. The Nickel City mac and cheese with blue cheese alfredo and Franks hot sauce tasted like chicken wing pasta and it was great. The best part, it was topped with crushed goldfish! Thats right, «the snack that smiles back» good old pepperidge farms goldfish. Both dishes were a contemporary, unique mix of ingredients that I have never combined before. Both were absolutely delicious. We tried each of the desserts; pumpkin cheesecake, grape pie, and chocolate crème brûlée. They were good, but did not wow us as much as the first two courses. The only negative comment I would make is that they did not offer the full menu, only the restaurant week special. I was hoping to try an appetizer off the menu but it was not available so I was slightly disappointed about that. Overall, it was a great experience and great food. I will definitely recommend it to friends and I will definitely be back!

I gave Torches another chance and went back with a large group. They redeemed themselves. Great service once again and this time the food lived up to the expectations. I ordered the Torches House Salad, Classic Shrimp Cocktail, and Tempura Shrimp & Vegetable Udon. Everything came to the table in a timely manner and was fresh and flavorful. The food was a complete turn around from my prior visit. I am glad they were able to win me back.

I have been to Torches many times over the years and last nights meal just cemented them as the #1 restaurant in Buffalo. The meal we had last night I would rank in my top 5 all time. Their fall menu is beyond compare. We started with an incredible amuse bouche from the kitchen. It was tortellini in a butternut squash crème fraîche topped with julienned apples and a pork confit. It is easily the best thing I have ever had at Torches. Our waitress told us that Chef JJ was out of town and his brother Kevin was in the kitchen tonight. So bragging rights go to Kevin for this round. We followed it up with the pumpkin gnocchi in a maple sauce. What made it stand out from previous years was the addition of thyme and rosemary to the sauce. It added a nice savory flavor to balance out the sweet. They also put a little char on the gnocchi to add an additional layer of flavor. For entrees my wife had the Filet Tournedos which were cooked perfectly. I went off the board for me a bit and ordered the Creole Meatloaf. I’m not usually a meatloaf fan but this isn’t your mothers dried out loaf of meat. It was stuffed with sausage and wrapped in bacon. The entrée also included shrimp jambalaya, cajun rice and bourbon butter sauce. It was perfectly cooked with just the right amount of heat. I decided to order my favorite Makers Mark pecan pie. Before I had a chance to get into that a plate with two mini pumpkin crème brûlée’s came out courtesy of the kitchen for sending them a round of drinks. Both desserts were perfect in every way. Overall it was an incredible way to spend our 3rd anniversary. On the way home my wife and I tried to come up with a better restaurant in Buffalo and couldn’t so in our minds and tastebuds Torches has the top spot!

Extremely disappointed. Im writing this as we wait for the check. Its as if everytime our waitress leaves our table and goes in the back she goes on another 15 minute break. We came for a celebratory dinner as my fiancé just received a new job offer. Everything from start to finish was a mess. Bread comes out warm, but it was obviously microwaved, «amuse bouche» was a full on burrito. Literally the plate burned me, but ironically the burrito itself was cold in the middle. Meals expensive and subpar-at best. My personal favorite part was when one of the side mirrors’ fell over on one of the bus boys while he was setting up another table. This place is falling apart at the seams. And by the way, that check — just made its way back. Only took a full review draft.

Been wanting to come to this place for a long time based on all the great Unilocal reviews. Atmosphere was decent, dimly lit with lots of mirrors to give the place a larger, more open feel. The background music came off the album Random Weird Songs 47. We were greeted by a somewhat incompetent waitress fumbling with an iPad, reading to us the specials that came pre-loaded on the device. The iPad/Surface/Super Large tablet kept resetting to the home screen in the middle of her presentation, a bit distracting but okay so far. Took about 30 minutes before we were presented with an amuse bouche(normally a bite sized pre-appetizer presented as a gift from the chef) consisting of a microwaved burrito. The plate literally burned my hand, while the beef in the middle was very cold. This set the tone for the remainder of the evening — impending disaster! 60+ minutes in, we finally get our dinner. Beef tournadoes were highly oversalted — they literally made my mouth pucker. The top from the salt shaker must have fallen off in the kitchen. Everything else was ok. Sadly, this was our first and last time here.

They do a good job with rehearsal dinners. The food was good and the bartenders were great. The only reason why I am only giving four stars is because at the time of writing this review their website was down. Come on guys! Other than that, this place is worthy of five stars but that website issue is bugging me. The location is not in a super nice area or anything, and it guess there are not too many nice areas when in Buffalo, but we can say it was a cool place for a rehearsal dinner and a fun way to start a party filled wedding weekend. Check this place out if you get a chance.

Amazing! I went here for my sister’s wedding rehearsal dinner and was amazed! Classy interior with an incredible menu. The service was top notch as our server tended to my brother and my thirsty needs and huge appetites. The appetizer’s were so delicious! We had bacon wrapped pierogi’s tossed buffalo style, tortellini/prosciutto pasta salad drizzled with truffle oil, meatball lasagna, shrimp with pan seared gnocchi, and dorito meat loaf. Next was the entrée round. I had the tenderloin tornedos’ which out of this world! Two prime grade filet’s perfectly grilled and a tasty mushroom demi glacé drizzled over them. They shared the plate with creamy garlic smashed potatoes and sautéed/glazed brussels sprouts. Oh my gosh I full!!! To continue the gluttony I had the flour-less chocolate cake which was savory and very rich. Needless to say, this place has got it going on! It was a perfect setting to enjoy delicious food with loved ones.

Torches has been a constant facet of my «To Try» list ever since its inception. Along with a couple friends, I finally checked it off during Local Restaurant Week 2014. First off, the ambiance is perfect. The low lighting gives the illusion of privacy, but it’s not so dark that squinting is required to see your food. The tables are nestled closely together, but overhearing nearby tables’ conversations was not an issue. I went with a few girlfriends, but this would definitely be a great option for date night. The service was fantastic. Everyone we encountered had a pleasant, easygoing professionalism that’s hard to find in other restaurants in the area. They were personable and attentive and are one of the factors that cemented one of my only 5-star ratings. We ordered off the LRW menu, so I’m not sure how their standard offerings compare. Overall, the food was fantastic. My beer and cheese soup, cradling a tiny sandwich triangle, was warm and satisfying with a ton of flavor. I was a bit nervous moving into the main course with expectations set unreasonably high from the appetizer, but I was not disappointed. My medium-rare steak was cooked perfectly and oozed flavor and juiciness. It rested on top some of the most delicious mashed potatoes I’ve ever had. My friends and I could not stop gushing over the dish’s amazing preparation, presentation, and flavors. I don’t typically order dessert at restaurants, but the LRW menu included one in the $ 20.14 price. I chose the drunken trifle, which was a piece of chocolate cake soaked in whiskey, wedged in a wine glass, and topped with a layer of chocolate ganache and a hat of whipped cream & cherry. Beautiful presentation, amazing on the palette. Deciding to steer away from traditional wine-and-steak pairings, I settled for the unconventional Big Ass Margarita. It was a bit pricey at $ 10, but I was prepared for the higher pricing. I canNOT wait to come back and eat here again. 5-star ratings have been, in my experience, difficult to maintain over multiple meals, but I feel pretty confident that this one will stick.

Excellent food and great service, This is one of my new favorite restaurants in Buffalo. Has a unique twist with tablets at the table for the menu. Bar is nice and relaxing and the menu is always changing, if you are in Buffalo for a short period of time I would make this a place to stop and enjoy a great meal. Get the fillet with lobster butter on it, they melt it with a flame right in front of you.

I live around the corner from Torches yet have only gone out to sample the food last week for the first time! We had a good experience and nothing was especially wrong however the food itself didn’t leave me wanting more… Or to come back and spend the steep bill again. First off the waitress brings you am iPad to look at images of all the food and cocktails on the menu. Not that it wasn’t useful I just really found it odd… And maybe tacky? Is that harsh? We proceeded at have some wine and they bring out some homemade chips and dip which was cute but I didn’t think went with the whole concept of the restaurant. We then had our steak entrees which were ok and skipped dessert and left. Nothing memorable. Just odd interior, odd menu, odd side notes. The same owner has a few different restaurants. I would skip this one and head to Smoke on the Water. This spot is just not worth the price tag.

Sunday brunch! I guess it’s not an all the time thing, but it sure was good. The complimentary coffee and pastries were a nice little extra. As I said, I don’t know that Sunday Brunch is always served but sometimes they post it on Facebook. I’ll be back!

After I told my husband about my last dining experience @ Torches with friends, he insisted that we go there for our wedding anniversary. He was NOT disappointed. Not that crowded on a Saturday night @ 6:30pm — hmmmmm. Perhaps it’s because it was Sweetest Day(although I would think this would be a perfect place to go!) More likely it’s because it was the last night of Restaurant Week & Torches did not participate. Oh well, I’m not about to complain that a place wasn’t crowded! Fresh bread with dipping oil. That night’s oil was a parsley/red pepper/red wine vinegar olive oil. My God, it’s just dipping oil but it was SOGOOD! That parsley made it taste so fresh. We both loved it & asked for more bread. Pigs, I know. Amuse bouche was a pork stew with cinnamon toast point. Quite a hearty serving for an amuse bouche, I thought. Tasty but nothing special; not disappointing but I would have preferred a small serving of bisque or a stuffed fig or something like that. The stew was almost too much that early in the meal. For appetizers we went for: Sausage & Cream Stuffed Poblano Pepper: Tempura Battered /Pea Tendril Salad /Burnt Bacon Vinaigrette This dish was probably my husband’s favorite, and I also enjoyed it very much. As we devoured it, we noticed an odor that we couldn’t put our finger on at first. Somehow familiar but not familiar enough to figure it out. Not offensive, just odd — very earthy. We finally realized — it smelled like dope. Yes, that’s right — pot, Mary Jane, whatever you want to call it. My guess is that it was the burned bacon vinaigrette mixing with the pea tendril salad. For the record, we did not get high from it. Popcorn Diver Scallops: Microwave Popcorn Cream Sauce /Sundried Tomato Pesto /Corn Shoots Perfectly cooked. Did not really notice the micro popcorn cream; the sundried tomato pesto made more of an impression. Hubby liked it well enough, but he was too busy putting down the poblano pepper so I ate most of the scallops. For dinner, husband ordered the A&W Braised short ribs with cheddar mashed potatoes & onion rings. The pork was falling apart, moist & tender. Perfect. He did end up being a teeny tiny bit disappointed after he tried my filet though! I had their special that evening. Surf & turf. YAWN, you say? Absolutely not. The 6oz filet mignon was medium, just as I ordered it(take a lesson here, Amaretto!) Literally melted in my mouth. The lobster was done Thermador-ish; the lobster meat was removed, then mixed with shrimp, crabmeat, spinach & some sort of creamy concoction, then stuffed back in. I have not had seafood that fresh & that finely cooked in a very long time. I LOVED it. Could not manage dessert. One thing to be aware of about Torches — you will be STUFFED when you walk out. Yeah, I know, we each had an appie plus the stew & bread. But still — they give you A LOT of food. We each took half our meal home & reheated it in the oven for dinner 2 days later — that was STILL a plenty large serving. They do not mess around. :)

OH! MY! GOODNESS!!! I may have just found a new FAVORITE restaurant in Buffalo! Just perfect! I love the chef’s playful and inventive way of putting dishes together! I love the setting, which in and of itself is quite surprising. An elegant place right on Kenmore Avenue next to a pizza joint. And, this gal LOVES surprises! It began with a wonderful bottle of Château St. Michelle Chardonnay. The crisp beginning and long oaky, buttery finish set the stage for what was to come. We were presented with an amuse buche of a mini conch fritter. It was quite tasty and reminded me of my barefoot days in Miami Beach(long ago, back before it became ultra glamorous South Beach… remember, I’m old). Then we were presented with homemade sour dough bread with an amazing parsley pesto for dipping into. The bread was bagel-like in texture and the pesto was yummy with a bit of a spicy kick. For my appetizer I had the Summer Grapefruit Gnocchi(Potato Gnocchi with Ruby Red Grapefruit Beurre Blanc, Mint, and a Greek Yogurt drizzle). It was AMAZING! The gnocchi was handmade and as light as a cloud. It was such a refreshing dish! And, I don’t think those words have ever been uttered about gnocchi. Usually they are as heavy and dense as a brick. The pairing with grapefruit and mint was so delightful that I was tempted to pick up my plate and lick up every drop of remaining sauce. It was difficult to control myself… seriously THATGOOD! The entrees are inventive as well. Think Tim Horton’s coffee crusted steaks and A&W Root-beer roasted short ribs. But this gal had the most delightful(in my opinion) dish of all. The supreme dish of all time: Ginger Snap Crusted Salmon with a Cortland Apple Risotto, Green Bean, Walnut and Bleu Cheese Salad(hold the bleu cheese for me… I can’t get past the moldy blue parts and the fact that it smells like dirty socks… just sayin’) and a Blood Orange and White Balsamic Reduction. WOW! WHAT A WONDERFULDISH! The salmon was cooked perfectly and the flavors all popped and worked so beautifully together. PERFECT! Desserts here are all homemade. I had a triple berry summer tart: graham cracker crust, strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries topped with(REAL!!!) whipped cream. A wonderful ending to a wonderful meal! I can’t wait to go back!

First and foremost, get yourself the coupon. Will save you $ 15 right off the bat and you can dl the mobile app so you don’t have to print it out. Our 2 entrees came out to $ 27 after tax/tip which even if you include the $ 10 I spent on the GC would be $ 37 for top-notch food so it’s still a great deal. Furthermore, if you have a Visa Signature card, you can save $ 5 off a coupon so you’ll save $ 20! Definitely have to go back now… We were started w/a complimentary amuse-bouche of pulled pork, BBQ sauce, and nacho cheese over a few tortilla chips. I wasn’t sure if this was given to everyone or just us b/c we had ordered the potstickers which they later apologized realizing they had run out. Anyways, any free food makes me happy so we’re off to a pretty good start. Next came the bread which was coated w/sesame seeds and sea salt and there was a basil mint pesto dip which was some of the best bread/dip I’ve ever had. So, now I’m actually glad we didn’t get our appetizer b/c both of those were plenty enough to fill w/the entrée. I went w/the mac & cheese and buttermilk fried chicken which, although good, got boring after a while. The chicken was cooked perfectly but the batter didn’t stay on. It was almost like they cheated and sous-vided the chicken and threw fried batter on top of it. The mac & cheese was good although I wasn’t a fan of the drizzled Frank’s Red Hot which IMO dumbs down any nice dish. Thought if they were going to do that, they should’ve thrown in some fresh vegetable over the top to cut into the heat — there was some scallion there but I think something like fresh corn would’ve been a better choice. My buddy’s A&W Short Ribs were melting off the bone and you could definitely taste the root beer flavor. I thought it could’ve used a little more oomph though b/c I felt the inside was a little bit bland. But nevertheless, still very good. Service was excellent. Not a single complaint in that area from me. Bottom line, this is one of the top 5 find-dining restaurants I’ve been to in Buffalo. I’d put it right there with Left Bank and ahead of Shango, Lombardo, O’Connell’s, and Fiamma. I’d definitely come here again and take advantage of that coupon.

Honestly, just why? Why isn’t this place more popular? I’d write 1000 more reviews if I could about Torches if it would just bump their rating up to 5. This is the one restaurant in Buffalo that I will recommend to anyone. It has never let me down in the 4 times that I have been there. EVERYTHING I had there was good. EVERY single thing. Their best dish is their grapefruit and potato gnocchi for sure. I don’t think I’ve raved about it on my review before this so I think I should do that now. It is SO pillowy and delicious. And mind you, I don’t really like potatoes. The grapefruit in it made it a little sweet and citrusy, but still savory and delicious. Ughh… what’d I do to eat another plate. But that’s currently not on their menu, but they still have the yukon gold gnocchi, which I ate too and that is damn delicious too. Just order 5 plates and gnocchi and get fat cause it’s worth it! I think they remodeled from the different times I went there. It’s niceee now. Still dark, but pretty. Pretty nice for the times I turn red when I drink wine too(damn asian glow, wtf). The servers are always good. Ah…Torches…the place that made me start to love fish(Think of a little asian girl hiding fish under her rice… or eating the fish and then barfing it up and hiding in the bathroom because her dad was chasing her) Their Chilean Sea Bass was really good and then I had the gingersnap crusted salmon too! My lovely date, Jerod L., experienced his first Torches experience with me on my birthday and he loved his A&W short ribs. Oh, and for my birthday, they brought me a limoncello shot, which I sadly had to pour into my water to hide the fact that I didn’t like it. I drank too much that evening already. D; Anddd you’ll always be surprised with amuse bouche that they give you. We got two the last evening I went. Usually, there will be at least one and it’s always good!

Fine Dining in Buffalo is very limited. This is one of those places if you really want to enjoy quality food, Wine, company, and service. Outside restaurant doesn’t look like a fine dining restaurant(Love the logo), but I was really impress how the inside looks! Very Friendly hostess, I was very satisfy with their service except one part. The waiter who attended us didn’t memorize the special menu that he had to read it(I think that was not professional enough to do on a fine dining). Food was DELICIOSO! — For Appetizer: We ordered a Crab cake. When it arrive to the table, I didn’t even want to break it because they decorated the Crab cake soo beautiful and artsy that I just wanted to stare at it. It consist of Bacon and Tomato on top of the Crab cake, and leaned to spinach with their special dressing on the bottom. — Entrée(ME): I was craving for seafood, so I ordered the Chilean Sea Bass with mushroom and Risotto around the plate following by a nice layer of Dijon Crusted on top of the Seabass. A nice way to compliment it! Seabass was made to perfection!, Loved the combination taste and soo good! that I ate mini pieces because I didn’t want to end this great taste of food. — Entrée(My Coolest Unilocaler Harley A. who introduced me to this awesome atmosphere) — Ordered from the special menu(which I forgot because I was OVERWHELMED with the tasty menu, everything looked soooo GOOD). — Dessert: Pumpkin Cheesecake homemade whipped cream, walnuts and fruits(star fruit, Strawberry and Blueberry). Which also was really Soft, Perfect flavor(Not super sweet or blend) and mixing with fruits was a great touch! Overall I was very satisfied. It’s difficult to have a small reviews on Unilocal, but since it’s considered a «FINE» dining, I would recommend this place! Price, Expect to pay over $ 50.00 /person for a nice meal. There’s also a Mini bar for you to sit and have drinks /dine in. But I would rather sit on a table with dimmed candle lights and relax. PS…Make sure to RSVP because the restaurant was full when I was there on a Friday Night. PS2…Their menus changes seasonal, so Not everything what you see on their website might have it. So it’s a good way to go back and try something different.
