This is a very popular spot in Brooklyn for sushi and I can see why — comfy table seating and clean lined semi private dining rooms… where you sit Japanese style. Shoes off and your feet go under the table in an alcove like seating. This is my 100th Unilocal review so I picked Tenzan for the honors. Tip #1 — when the waiter or waitress comes to take your order, order everything as best you can. Sometimes waiting for them to return is like waiting on a free refill — you never know when they will return. Ha ha But seriously, it’s super busy so I can see why it may take a while for them to return. Someone always does so the good news is that you don’t have to rely on one person to wait on you. Even if it’s not the same person, flag someone and they will come. Tip #2 — do tell them if you want certain sushi/sashimi plated separately. Restaurants like to play on presentation so it’s happened before where they plate everything onto one if you don’t specify. Because I did the ordering for my group of 6, I specified what could and could not be plated together.(Allergies) Tip #3 — if you can, make a reservation. Sometimes they’re so busy on a given night, you can’t tell how long you have to wait for a table. Doesn’t matter the group size … it matters the time you go. Tip #4 — know that if you order a la carte sushi/sashimi pieces, each order is 1 pc. Not two like many other places. But note, their slices are thick cut. Not thin. Now onto the food… which is why they get the four stars. I’ve been here on occasion when I visited Brooklyn(this is my old hood) and it doesn’t disappoint. Service is iffy but food is spot on. The sushi is fresh and many are premium pieces. The choices on the menu suit all folks… raw or cooked, hand rolls or standard rolls, small apps to big entrees. Covers all territories, even noodle soups or fried rice. Their dinner boxes don’t disappoint in size, order options, and presentation. When you order a dinner box, you can choose a California roll, sashimi, or sushi to fill a compartment. It also comes w/miso soup or a salad as well as other delicious side offerings — for ex: fresh cut fruit, shrimp dumplings, or gyoza. My fav dish of the night was the«a la carte» sushi/sashimi pieces I ordered off the menu to have them plate as my dinner. I normally would do the Sashimi dinner but this time I was craving very specific pieces so I ordered that way. The scallop(aka hotate) sashimi was excellent. Sweet and fresh, no briny flavor and it went down as smooth as it looks. The other favorite of the night was the salmon. Their salmon sashimi was cut thick so I ordered six pcs to supplement for an order of 10 that we usually order elsewhere. The other outstanding piece of sashimi was the surf clam. It was very fresh and the texture was a bit tougher as expected but not rubbery. Perfection. Other folks in my party ordered the cooked food — vegetable tempura, beef sukiyaki noodles, and the Shrimp Dinner box. All were very flavorful and great for sharing. I’d recommend this place any time.

Been to this place before and after they renovated. Didn’t like it back then and still don’t like it. The sushi is priced way too high for the quality of fish. I even got sick from eating their soggy spicy salmon hand roll. I will never be eating at tenzan again!

This place isn’t bad. Pretty good for the price. The food tastes pretty good and the service is on point, even for Mother’s Day. We had some of their cooked rolls(for the children and grandparents) and some of them are very unique with a crazy combination of flavors and textures. The only reason it’s not 5 stars is their sashimi was at least ½ to ¾ inch thick. That’s not what you want from sashimi but bang for buck, this place takes the cake. Plus they have a full bar. Highly recommend if you’re in the mood for sushi and are in the area. Docked one star because they forgot two rolls and when we had the bill and noticed., they wouldn’t knock it off the bill and forced us to take it.

Probably the best sushi place in the area! The food is amazing for its price and they also have private rooms! I’ve been a long time customer and no sushi restaurant has ever beat this one in the area. Yes, it is pricier than the AYCE restaurants but the quality is worth it – plus their portions are very filling so you won’t have to order too much(they waitress actually suggested us not to order so much instead of trying to push us to order more)

One of my favorite places to go when I come home from school to my parent’s house. Fresh sushi and big portions! I recommend their salmon plate(6 piece salmon sashimi, 3 piece salmon sushi, and a salmon roll) and tuna plate. Green river roll and the 3 spicy combo rolls are also really good. Their stirfry udon is also very yummy. I also tried their white penguin roll before– I’m not a fan, but if you like spring rolls, you should try it. I would recommend to go at times that not many people go(late afternoons, late mornings etc.) because it gets really busy, they might forget about you, and portions are bigger. They also have private rooms that you can request! You take off your shoes before you enter and it’s great for parties of 5 – 6 people. They also have larger rooms for more people. They take reservations, so you can reserve a room beforehand.

I used to like this place and I want to love this place but the quality is really lacking. The restaurant was full on a Friday night. I had a party of 9. They initially tried to squeeze us in a room that only fits 6. We eventually were given a bigger room upstairs where there was only one waitress for 2 large parties. We ordered the salmon deluxe and another plate of sashimi. The salmon pieces were an inch thick. Now I love salmon sashimi but they’re not supposed to be cut an inch thick! It totally destroys the quality and the texture of that fish. And the sashimi were obviously not fresh because their color was as dull as the white paper you print on. For a full house I was expecting the food quality to be better than what I got. I don’t think I’ll be coming back here anytime soon again…

I enjoyed my food & experience at this restaurant, which was recommended to me by a friend. The restaurant is clean, staff attentive and pretty fast. My only wish would be for the Tofu dishes to come fresh as opposed to fried. Or at least give an option to get one that’s not fried. The sushi was good(I’m a Vegetarian; no fish or meat for me). I ordered few of the vegetable rolls and they came out wrapper with a thin layer of rice and lots of filling. Quite the opposite to what you normally get. But I liked it and I realized there’s no need for think layer of rice on a sushi anyways. I thought it was tastier that way.

We ordered dinner for delivery the other day, were told it would be delivered within 45 minutes. Waited for 1 hour and 35 minutes. Called to find out what happened after exactly 1 hour of waiting. «Food is ready… waiting for the delivery guy» said the lady — when asked how long till he comes back, she said«15 minutes» — assured me it would be delivered ASAP, took another 35 minutes — WELIVE10MINUTESAWAY — Completely unprofessional and unacceptable. Our ‘relationship’ has been terminated.

Tenzan is a pretty good choice for sushi in Brooklyn. If you’re looking for huge pieces of sushi/sashimi or massively wrapped hand rolls. For the price, you definitely get enough food and the quality is slightly above average. We got ourselves a private booth seating where you first have to remove your shoes before entering. So make sure you don’t wear those favorite socks with the holes in them. Service was a little off, we had 2 servers for our group and they clearly didn’t communicate with each other. They were unsure if we received our food from the other waitress each time. But overall they were very friendly towards us. Tip: Request a booth if you have a large party. There’s a light switch for you to call the waitress over. It turns on a red lightbulb to alert them. So close the door and cut out the noise from the rest of the restaurant, call them in when you need something.

Thoroughly enjoyed the meal from there. Ordered sushi which came out fresh and flavorful. The dumplings were delicious as well. Would definitely return due to quality of food.

One star for the deplorable service. My friend and I came here one night to catch up over sushi and sake. Because we weren’t getting a full meal, we opted to sit at the bar(which, by the way, I think is a great feature). At first, everything was fine. Our order was promptly taken and we didn’t have to wait long for our food and drinks. It was a little later in the evening on a weeknight, so it wasn’t busy. However, there was an older man at the bar next to us who was drunk when we arrived and proceeded to get hammered as time went on. He kept talking to us and, at first, we were polite to him. At a certain point, he just became obnoxious and we tried to ignore him. Didn’t work. He kept rudely butting into our conversation and began making inappropriate comments. I finally told him to leave us alone, but it didn’t work. We told a staff member that he was bothering us, though I don’t think we should have even had to considering he was able to see it himself. He kind of just shrugged, but then told the man to settle down. Instead of listening, the man got louder and made a huge scene. It was very uncomfortable and common sense would have told the employees to kick him out. When I said this to the hostess, she informed me that he was a regular. And then continued to serve him alcohol. I refuse to give my business to a place that condones this kind of behavior.

Heads up: rolls are little pricier compared to neighboring sushi restaurants The restaurant’s interior is bit more upscale, i think its really cute place to bring a date here! They have rooms where you can eat and follow the Japanese tradition(shoes off). I really wanted donburi but did not want the meat option and was hoping to exchange it for tofu. The owner(i think) kept persisting me to eat meat, and said it was not possible to have tofu on the side. Okay… so i decided to go with vegetable yaki udon. Never had bad yaki udon before, Tenzan taste was similar to any other japanese restaurant. Food wasn’t bad, I really enjoy the interior. I appreciate the thought they wanted to protrude; wooden spoobs, pretty cups, rose stamped napkins… Though the service did not meet my expectation. Food dishes were served even when other dishes werent finished. So some of my party members were empty plated for awhile. the owner was really persistent on some food items that did not interest my party members. I wouldn’t mind coming back here, but hopefully have another waiter

Best place for sushi in Brooklyn. The rolls are a bit pricey but the sashimi, chirashi, and salmon special are average price, maybe even cheaper($ 18.95, $ 16.95, and $ 14.95 respectively) and has HUGE almost inch-thick slices. The sashimi special for lunch is totally worth the $ 9.95 because the pieces are also massive. The food tastes great too, fresh and will really fill any sashimi craving. Also great for large parties in the private rooms or you can reserve upstairs. For party rooms, don’t have more than fifteen people(no matter what they say), less if there is anyone bigger than average. Must take off shoes for the party rooms so hope no one’s feet stink!

Excellent food and overall experience. I came here with family for dinner on a Friday night. I hear they’re usually crazy busy but we got lucky this night. We had a private dining room, complete with the traditional ‘taking shoes off’ custom. The salmon teriyaki dinner box was absolutely delicious with big portions. It came with the salmon teriyaki, rice, a large amount of veggie tempura with two large shrimp tempura, three pieces of shumai, and your choice of California roll, sushi, or sashimi. I had the sashimi option and it came with 6 fresh pieces.

I live in the area, so come whenever I’m in dire need of sushi and can’t trek to the city. Tenzan is passable, but nothing is extraordinary. All the staff are Chinese, so don’t expect an authentic Japanese experience. The salmon sashimi is decently sized and priced.

Tenzan is a rare find in Brooklyn. Food is on point. Fish is always fresh. Bar is fully stocked. It definitely is one of the best sushi restaurants in Brooklyn. And most importantly, they are consistent. My first visit was back in 07⁄08 when they were still in their previous location. And everything is just as good as the first visit. The décor itself is worth 5 stars. It is a little more pricey compared to most brooklyn sushi restaurants but it’s worth it.

Decided to give this new place a try during New Year’s Day and I’m glad I came! There is two floor to this place which is awesome for groups plus they have rooms that you sit in too with privacy, but they require your to take your shoes off and sit in. The inside environment is very cozy, comfortable and nice! Feels very good to sit and eat in this Resturant! The staffs were nice and the food came pretty quick! Though this is not a buffet sushi place, that’s okay because their prices aren’t that bad and they are made very deliciously in my opinion! As we sat down, they brought us hot green tea which is my favorite while eating sushi! Since it was our first time here, I asked the waiter for recommendation as to what is popular and good here. We ordered a taro and mango jelly milk tea since it was decent price considering for bubble tea. I must say I am very satisfied with it! Both were made very light yet tasteful! The jellies were soft and chewable! As for food, we ordered the spicy sashimi pizza(8 pieces), grilled teriyaki sauce squid, salmon sashimi deluxe, sunset roll, dragon eel roll, Philadelphia roll, spicy salmon roll, red lady roll, eel avocado roll and another special roll(forgot the name). Total for 5 people to eat and we were all full to the top of our lungs! First of all, the spicy sushi pizza was decent, not the best I’ve had but not terrible either. The squid was very delicious !! Loved the sauce too! As for the rolls, they were all good and special in their unwise ways which I loved! I’m very satisfied! Next time I’m coming back for less sushi and some room for their desserts!
