I am very disappointed with this place. Everything was way too expensive for such a small portion. I believe Jin Jin across the street is a much better place to eat from. Food was soggy as well. Will never order from here again…

Sometimes life is so unfair because the good things are always far away to reach. and that’s what happens with silver star. i finally found an old school chinese restaurant where they served delicious, tasty, non pretentious, humble, classic chinese food. first time i came here, i was blown away with the friendly service from the staffs. they were there to actually serve you and wanted to impress you with their service and food. i got the five spiced duck — delicious is all i could say. the duck was so tender and juicy i even felt full after 5 — 6 slices and decided to take the remaining leftover home. it still tasted good next day. the wonton soup was definitely what a wonton soup should be! 4 big plumpy wontons and tasty broth. if i am in the area(in BK) and happen to pass by bensonhurst, i for sure will def pay a visit to silver star again(that is if in this case i am craving Chinese food lol).

When we are in the mood for Chinese food we walk 16 blocks good exercise lol, along 18 ave and until we reach Silver Star. We have always enjoy sitting here eating our meal. We have try many of their different dishes. We always have their Won ton soup and their crispy noodles with the sauce they give you with their tea as you sit waiting for your order. On a cold day that hot tea hits the spot and warms your inside. We usually come in on a Sunday late afternoon to enjoy a late lunch the place is quiet environment, no loud obnoxious chatting from other customers like you see in other places. Everyone is sitting enjoying their meal. The waiters are nice and you can see how they always try to do their best to make you feel welcome and comfortable. We never had a problem with the food or their service. Everything so far has always taste great. We also like Double Delight on 17ave but we only order from here when its take out delivery. Double Delight also has very good Chinese food. I recommend both places. They both have awesome Chinese food.

Silver Star has remained exactly what it should be and what is so incredibly difficult to find these days. That is true, properly made old school Chinese-American Cantonese and Szechuan food. It is astounding to think of just how badly Chinese food has been degraded at almost all open kitchen take out dumps in NYC and everywhere else. They serve boring, tastlesss, low quality, and largely inedible slop. And every year or two another ingredient is eliminated from the dishes served at these sorry restaurants almost robotically as if all 5,000 of those places are somehow owned by the same person! Silver Star is the exact opposite of all of that misery. Everything from the addictive and amazing super crunchy homemade fried noodles to the great old school wanton eggdrop soup(that actually still contains bok choy, generous, delicious pieces of roast pork and wantons that are not the size of gumballs!!) to the nicely prepared and delicious garlic sauce dishes, are just what they should be. The chicken in foil actually still exists! Fast, friendly, old school service and the requisite metal dish of ice cream for dessert seal the deal here. If you want to understand what Chinese food used to be all over NYC, take the N Train to the 18th Ave stop and check out Silver Star. This is not«artisinal» so don’t expect the pretentiousness nor is it one of the typical noodle house spots serving(sometimes good) dim sum and noodle soups. Silver Star is one of the last true connections to the classic stuff as used to be standard everywhere in the city.

Been coming here for 20 years. The food and people are great. I have seen others who say the food is tasteless and I totally disagree. The place hasn’t changed and has been here forever and that is their secret. You don’t change what works until a problem comes up.

This review is only based on their hot and sour soup and what I can see as I’m making my order at the cash register. + Their hot and sour soup is the bomb. I love the acidity, the fried noodles that come with it, and the fact that it actually has meat in it unlike many chinese take out places. ++ THISISONLYONEDOLLAR sometimes when i order it in Chinese… — When I don’t order in chinese, it can be up to 2 bucks… why :( — The restaurant looks kinda old and dirty, but it also gives off a 1900s feel AND they got an A so no major points taken off for that.

They’ve managed to satisfy their neighborhood since the 40’s and they definitely served me the chicken corn soup I was looking for and unlike other places in the area consistently have an ‘A’ grade for sanitation.

I was in the neighborhood and starving during lunch time so my friend and I decided to come here for their lunch special. Honestly this was one of the worst Chinese food I have ever eaten in my life. I ordered the shrimp in garlic sauce. The shrimp seemed like it was from those frozen packs. There was no flavor in the meal and the fried rice just tasted like soy sauce. I had the wonton soup that also came with the meal and it just tasted really strange. I didn’t eat it anymore after that one spoonful. They charge like $ 6.65 for the lunch special and I truly regret spending that much here. The only reason I’m giving this place 2 stars is because of their kind service and the tea.

Silver Star has been around forever, last time I came here was when my boss at old job had a managers meeting here, that was like a decade or so ago. The place still looks the same and something tells me if you go back another decade or two it wouldnt have changed much and I like that. Its kitschy, First thing that impressed me is they put down a dish of the old school crispy noodles, the thicker, darker ones, not the typical ones that come in the bag. Plus real deal duck sauce and mustard, the kind of Chinese mustard that clears out the sinuses. I could have made a meal of this alone. I got a lunch special of roast pork and broccoli with pork fried rice. Nice wonton soup, couldve had a bit more salt but wontons were full of meat and they had nice pieces of pork in it and not just those lil strings. The combo was good, the pork was good, the broccoli was crisp and the rice was the full grain dark variety I love.

The best old school chow mein in brooklyn! So if you are at Silver Star, no need to be confused… just order the chow mein with spare ribs and fried rice combo and have a great day.(btw, ask them to make the fried rice dark… a thing i learned from mom)

Old-school, traditional, somewhat-Americanized Chinese food. Nothing too fancy, but the carved screen at the entrance is lovely, and even the 1950’s-style plastic padded booths have a certain charm. I was brought here by the guy, who’s been coming here since he was a kid. It’s entirely possible that his parents came here as kids, too. The food is copious, affordable, and tasty, if not what you’d call ‘gourmet.’

«Happy Enjoy» That’s what Ming used to say, he was a long-time server at Silver Star and one of the nicest old men you would ever meet. That was back in the mid 1990’s and Ming is no longer with us, but Silver Star still stands as one of the elder Chinese restaurants in Brooklyn. We do not dine in there much anymore but we definitely take advantage of the takeout! In fact, my family had a feast of Silver Star food this evening. $ 71 bought us a ridiculous amount of food for 7 adults and leftovers for at least a couple of days. My favorite is their shrimp chow fun, the shrimp is not rubbery and seasoned well while the chow fun noodles are cooked nicely! With the rest of the feast we had steamed pork and vegetable dumplings, chicken fried rice, about 8 egg rolls, wonton soup, chicken chow mein, broccoli with garlic sauce and so much more. Silver STar food is good, but not great. They use less salt than other places, which is why other reviewers feel the food isn’t as tasty. This can leave a little to be desired but it’s still good food! Silver Star is a safe bet for a good Chinese meal, the delivery guy drives a BMW so they have to be doing something right!

Local place that was open since 1944. Their chicken chow mein is a classic that is rarely found at other Chinese restaurant. The décor is very traditional Chinese style. Price are very reasonable, lunch is around 6 – 7 bucks with desert and dinner is average at 15 bucks a person and you still have left over for tommorrow lunch. Great for family gathering and work parties.
