Kayaking in New York’s Jamaica Bay? YES, it is possible! First time kayaking in my life instill intense fears of capsizing vessel, loosing a paddle, and of course further intensify my fear of drowning but these fears(except for the last) minimized to mere illusions at the conclusion of my newest adventure. Kayaking! Launching from Paedergat Basin into open ocean waters of Jamaica Bay for a mere two miles stretch(four miles total round-trip) was a purifying escape from life’s daily grind of the daily deal. This kayak water trail passes under the Belt Parkway, which amusingly as kayakers, we were moving faster than automobile traffic! Staff are extremely welcoming, attentive and compassionate to first timers, and above all informative instructive to calm first timers. All in all Sebago Canoe Club’s staff operate as a cohesive team to help kayakers should there be man overboard from capsize. I was instructed with the proper technique to board a kayak vessel and how to paddle which include body formation, not strictly arm movements. We kayaked into shore unreachable by vehicle, nor bicycle, nor canoe boat, nor by foot where we had a ten minute break for swimming. Rather than swim, like most normal people, I collected several sea shells serving as a memory of this happy moment. I’ve learned the logistics of a kayak vessel as oppose to canoe, or row boat which the main unique difference is the ability to afloat on very shallow waters which our group were in mere four feet later downgraded to two feet. We passed by marshes on the outskirts of Jamaica Bay as I’ve often wonder how to be in proximity of marshes. I only wished for my camera to capture these happy moments. After thirty minutes of continuous kayaking into Jamaica Bay, all of my life’s griefs and struggles were dispelled as I was truly relaxed at peace. Tandem kayak vessels are available for two people which I was in it with a friend. I dare to be alone in a kayak vessel as a first timer in conjunction with my fore-mention fears. Life preservers are available as well as paddles which are included in the kayak adventure. Lockers are available which the unisex changing room inhabits. Two nasty outhouses are the source for facilities, do not expect a royal Porcelain Throne as this is the great outdoors! The pier is very well maintained without fault. At the conclusion, we all contributed to the cleanup by hosing all kayak vessels and life preservers to remove salt water including docking at bay. No spray showers are available to rise off salt water but hoses are readily available. Admission is a reasonable $ 10.00 cash or check per person with a signed written consent for liability. Yes, I would do it all again in a heartbeat!
