I’ve been coming here for years and never had an issue. Usually I would have Quinne but this time I decided to go for whoever, BIGMISTAKE! I ended up with the middle aged lady mentioned by some people in other comments. She really does just go at it with your hair, chopping chunks out the most frightening fashion. She is also incredibly rough, scratching my face with her comb and smashing her comb and hairdryer into my ears multiple times. To make things even more delightful, she dropped her comb several times and just delves it back into my freshly washed hair. But things get even nastier, she sneezes several times into her hands and pauses for several moments to rigorously rub her nose before running her fingers back into my hair. Not only was this the grossest hair cut I’ve ever gotten, its the worst one too. It is super choppy even after despite I asking her to layer it «a little.» There are random bunches of hair that are at least two inches shorter than the rest of my hair and the length is not even. I really should have said something about it but I really just wanted to get out of her hands. I wouldn’t say that I would avoid this place but I advise that you avoid her at all cost. The lady is a bit short and middle aged.

Coming here for years, can’t beat their prices for haircuts. Make sure you get a stamp card for a free oil treatment, 5 visits and its free! I never had my hair cut here but my boyfriend has and they do a decent job each time. I usually get my hair done for a wedding or formal event. Price ranges from 35 — 45 depending on the style you choose. I’d go for the male stylists, I had quinnie do it and it was kinda eh, she styled it too short. There’s this one guy who’s in his mid 40s or 50s he does it perfectly each time. He sits furtherest to the back, on the left side when you walk toward the hair washing station. I havent seen him around but his colleagues said he’s on holiday. I hope he’s still there cause I went there twice in the last 4 months and i haven’t seen him. Staff is trilingual, English, mandarin and Cantonese. I recommend coming here with a photo of the hairstyle you want so they do it right.

You get more than your money’s worth here. For $ 15 plus tip I got a wash, cut, and blow dry, and the people here were friendly enough and – most importantly – efficient. A very similar operation a block west often makes you wait upwards of 45 minutes between the wash and the cut. That might be worth it for some people who want to spend only $ 15, but no wait is even better. That’s why I like this place. So the bottom line is, if you just need a simple haircut I would recommend Modern Hair and Nail Salon.

stay away from the middle aged woman named julie(?), she butchers your hair in 5 mins and you’re left wondering what happened. peter is no longer there, so ask for one of the younger guys. i come here since it’s dirt cheap($ 10 for a cut) but i got charged $ 15 this time since my hair was longer… or the blow drying/straightening cost money too? i’m not really sure but i’m happy paying less than $ 20 for a hair cut 2 or 3 times a year. i’ve never been to a high-end salon since my hair is asian straight and i like to keep it low maintenance(a little layering and long side swept bangs) so i cant say what the results would be like for curly or thicker hair.

I was in much need of a hair cut so my mom and I went here bc it was very cheap so I thought why not. This was my first time in this salon and it will be the last time. I suggest for NOONE to go. Worst hair experience of my life! My hair was, WAS extremely long so i wanted to cut off about 2 inches or 1 and a half inches off. So after they wash my hair I sit in the chair and try to explain to her how i want it. I don’t know why it took her so long to understand. i told her how much to cut off and then she asked me if i wanted the back straight or a V or a U and i said make it straight.(I don’t like the straight style but it was my first time in this hair salon so i wanted to see how they would do it first) So she starts cutting and i tell her to make A LITTLE bit of long layers in the back not too much just a little bc i didn’t want to pay $ 25 for just a cut. So after she cuts the bottom layer she starts the middle layer and i see in the mirror she cut off A LOTMORE Than i had asked her. I am not one to just sit there so i asked her why did she just cut off so much and she said supposedly its bc of the layers so i was like okay. Then she started to cut the top front section and i told her to cut some long layers just a little in the front so that the front part of my hair doesn’t fall straight down. She takes the front section and i see her about to cut my hair into bangs. i yell at her to stop and ask her wtf is she doing i didn’t say bangs i said long layers then she turns to me and says«You’re hair is too thin and too short for long layers» I get very bc my hair is not«too thin» and was not«too short» So i told her to forget it bc she obviously didn’t know what she was doing. So after she starts blow drying my hair with 2 blow dryers. i don’t know why but i thought w. e then before she started i asked her to put volume in my hair using the blow dryer. I do my hair at home and i always put a lot of volume in it bc i don’t like when my hair falls flat on top. She didn’t understand so i had to explain to her by hand gesture… what kind of a hair stylist doesn’t know what«PUTVOLUMEINMYHAIRWHILEBLOWDRYING» means!!! Anyways so she asks me if she wants to blow dry my hair straight or curly. i told her make it straight but the ends make them curl up a little. So of course again i see her doing something i didn’t ask. she starts making it curly but it didn’t even look curly it looked just messy. so i told her you know what forget it just make it straight if you don;t know don’t do it. So she gives me a face and starts making it straight. And she put absolutely no volume whatsoever in my hair it was actually flatter then ever. So after everything i take a look at my hair and it was the worst I’ve ever seen… she cut my hair very short. up to my breasts when my hair was long down my back almost touching my butt. not only that bc i didn’t mind too much the shortness bc it grows back but the supposed«layering» she did in the back was something unimaginable. My mother and i flipped out on her for being stupid and not knowing how to cut hair. I can’t even describe how it looks. she cut layers like literally one inch above the other layer so it didnt even look like layers. it looked like i got a 5 yr old gave them scissors and told them to cut away. my hair was completely uneven and i had a lot of stray hairs that were longer n some shorter it was ridiculous. And after she blow dried my hair she turned her straighter on and tried straightening my hair. I DIDN’T ASKFORTHAT. So i yell at her asking wtf is she doing i don’t want it straightened. we asked to speak to the manager who was a short Asian man we tell him she fucked up my hair and he grabs my hair take scissors and it about to cut more of hair yelling at us. So i tell him to fuck off don’t touch my hair. And my mother and i walked out. My mothers hair came out ok. But mine. terrible. Worst experience ever. They have no idea what they are doing. If you take care of your hair and actually care about what happens to them do not go there. I REPEATDONOTCOMEHERE.

I thought the place was very nice! Affordable and it was clean with a nice set up. The people were nice also. My friend Rosie got her hair blow dried and a peticure and I got a french manicure for 6.00 bucks :)

After reading the other reviews I was a bit apprehensive about going to Modern, however, my wallet was much more broke then i was scared. So needing just a trim I decided to bight the bullet and go for it. I planned on being back in town around 600 that night so getting a trim would be no issue. However, it was almost 8pm, by the time i found parking. I called anyway, to see if they could take me. «Come come» i was told. Great! Ill finally get this nap cut! When I opened the door i was greeted by a cloud of smoke and a smiling Asian man who said«Shampoo?» I replied«Trim please» he gestured to go back to the shampoo girls, and one took me by the hand through the smoke to the rear where i was directed to hang my coat. I immediately worried for the 4 – 5 girls whos hair was melting under the hair driers and wondered if they just didnt mind or if they were too scared to ask their dresser to please stop burning their tresses… Those thoughts were fleeting though… soon I was under the spell of the shampoo girl. Ive always wished I could afford to have someone wash my hair each day– its so relaxing! And this was no exception. Within about 10 minutes we were done, i was sad, but i followed her to the front anyway. Once there the same gentleman who greeted me sat me down and proceeded to prep me for my cut. He asked me «Layers?» I quickly thought to myself it would be best not to make this complicated– i like cheap but im no idiot. «oh no no Straight straight please» He quickly got to cutting. Straight across… chunk by chunk my very long blond hair was cut… straight…across. Then he picked up the blow dryer. «NONONO! Thats ok really no dry please» he gave me a look and instantly i knew that in his chair it was his word. He began to blow dry… I began to hold back tears. Thankfully this man did not burn my hair, nor did he completely dry it. I think he just didnt like the thought of me leaving in 14 degree weather dripping wet… And possibly it helped him to make certain he did a decent cut(although i do highly doubt that). I left, 17 bucks later– shampoo, cut and tip. My hair was so happy. My wallet was so happy and I was so happy. No this place will not replace your 5th Ave spa and salon but it will get your hair trimmed and wallet saved from time to time. I plan on doing a potential every other trim here. Next time ill get my layers and all their butt kissing glory at my way-too-expenisve Manhattan salon, and then follow that up with cheap maintenance here. He did nothing wrong, and for that price and spead(I was in an out in less then 30 minutes) I see nothing at all that deserves complaint.

So, after a horrible experience else where a friend of mine tells me about the cheapo place that she goes to every week that gets it right every time. So, I ventured out to Bensonhurst and I got my hair done. Jesse(the stylist) was amazing. He was nice, actually understood what I was saying and took it slow. My hair cut was full and even without being blunt and choppy and my blow out was silky smooth. I feel like I have a different head of hair. I was concerned that my curly thick hair would be a problem but I didn’t feel singled out or like I was difficult. I was in and out in 30 minutes. Amazing.

So I walked into this nondescript salon, 3 months past the«in need of a haircut» phase looking like Cousin It. This girl with a red plastic belt whisks me into a chair and proceeds to wash that brain right out of my hair. She must have been trained by Shaolin monks, as the mini neck massage pushed pressure points that made my right leg kick out by itself. I was helpless under the warm water and eagle talons she had as fingers. After ten minutes of Chinese water torture, I found myself in a chair confronted by a bored-looking guy who was in need of a haircut himself. He gives me a raised eyebrow, I tell him layers, and he proceeds to do his thing. First he ties the sheet tightly around my neck, slowly cutting off my ability to breathe. I had to readjust to avoid the barber chair sleeper hold. A few snips later he dries my hair, using two dryers in one hand. I would’ve marked his double-barrel drying impressive had it not been for the several occasions he burned my ear tips. Perhaps it was a welcomed distraction. The pain turned my attention away from the rather messy booths and dull-looking shears that lined the counter tops. I console myself. At least I didn’t see rust. After the entire ordeal, I was presented with the bill. The entire wash and cut was a whopping $ 14. Again I console myself. Not too bad. I paid the bill, tipped the eagle talon hair washer and hair cutter and walked out masking the pain of my experience. Lesson learned? Don’t walk into a nondescript salon 3 months past the«in need of a haircut» phase.
