Great Tortas… But the ordering system is weird and they only have 2 tables and they are dirty all the time. But the food is great

This place is for the OG’s. You like not expensive authentic tacos? You like solid meat? You like quality hot sauce? This place is for you! I always go for the basics there, 2 or 3 bisteck with hot sauce and you’re good. The place is always busy so don’t worry, you won’t eat meat that was cooked in the morning or something, everything is super fresh.

Another amazing spot for tacos/cemitas and other mexican fair located within a bodega. I was told this spot has the best Cemitas and Tortas in town, according to someone I saw eating an equally impressive looking sandwich at Quarter Bar. The Cemita was certainly some next level deliciousness — the bread was more significant than I have had at other spots. Very crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. It held the sandwich together really well. I ordered a chorizo/pastor mix, for $ 7 — nice that they didn’t charge extra for the mixture, usually places will do that. Also, the guy taking the orders spoke english very well — he must be the translator for when hipster and gringo folk like myself come in and dont know how to order(you order from the bodega cashier, not the food counter). While the sandwich rocked, I wish they had a toppings bar like El Tenampa.

I just came from this place as a I live a couple of blocks away. There’s a yellow sign that says the place has been closed by the Dept of Health & Hygiene. Really wanted to try their tortas but got an obvious«sign» that maybe its not a good idea.

Great tacos, probably shaded by Reyes’ between 14th and 15th on 4th ave. The torta is also up there with Brooklyn’s best, although my lady informs me that they’re not a patch on certain establishments in the South Bronx. Really, she should be writing this review, but ‘are you going to check in on your phone like a dork?’ might give you an indication as to where she stands on the Unilocal craze. She’s right of course(about Unilocal) and I have no reason to doubt her on The Bronx either.

The best tacos ever! I can’t stay away from the carnitas tacos and at $ 2 bucks a piece, it’s a great deal. I’ve been having tacos from here for about three years, usually at least once a month. I’ve only been disappointed twice when the meat was dry and overcooked. Twice in three years is a pretty good record. Also love the random selection of food they have in the Food Center part of the store. Great guavas!

I declare this place the«Best Mexican Food in Brooklyn» which is saying a lot(I’ve been here only two months, but have tried roughly 20 places) and then not much(I would only go back to maybe 3 of them, including here). Hilariously, this was also the cheapest and least glamorous of all I’ve tried. Awesome selection of tacos, huaraches, gorditas(made from masa not the typical Taco Bell taco-in-pita kind), tortas, tostadas. Basically all the great mexican street food options are well done here, and they have a flavorful selection of meat fillings. My favorites are the barbacoa, chorizo and al pastor. I haven’t tried the beef here and i don’t roll with tongue, but I’ve heard its tasty. The chicharron is intense, but also delicious. To me, a Mexican restaurant defines itself by its beans, often overlooked by chefs as an afterthought. Here they are well done, salty, flavorful and not runny. At $ 2.50 for most menu items, you can’t really go wrong here.

Had a fantastic milanesa de res torta here. I’d just about given up on mexican food in NY but this inspires hope. They don’t skimp here, shit gets loaded up, and the roll that buttresses it all is great too, none of that french roll crap here. Order from the cashier on your right, turn around and give your receipt to the guy in the kitchen stall thing. Acquire torta, disregard manners. Stuff your friggin face, you’ll want to.

The neighborhood is lucky to have this place. The tostadas are amazing. The owner and staff are super friendly, too. This place deserves your business.

Sad to say that the quality of the once yummyful«Torta» is now a hard cold zero. :(what was once fresh chicken cutlet avocado and string cheese melted to perfection with lettuce tomato and beans on a roll is now a greasy rubbery horrible tasting mexican sandwich that tasted just like disappointment. sighhhhhhh :\

Came here unexpected, and was completely amazed. I had two lengua(tongue) tacos, and it was one of the most delicious tacos I’ve ever had. The meat filling was plentiful and juicy, and the onions & cilantro tasted great, along with this red hot sauce they put on it. These are authentic and traditional tacos: with the essential onions, cilantro, and hot sauce– not the hard shell with lettuce and cheese. I’ll definitely be going back for more of the menu in the future.

What do you do when your gf tells you, on a cold and rainy Sunday afternoon in January, that she wants to get a spicy and salty Mexican candy you’ve never heard of, that you can get only at this store in the forgotten underbelly of Park Slope? Well, you join her enthusiastically, of course! The candy is called Pulparindo(like pulpa+tamarindo, although at first I thought it was Poop-A-Rindo…). Not my thing, but I like the idea that I’m dating an adventurous woman who knows what she wants and knows how to get it. While we were at it, we also got a torta and a taco. The torta with the milaneza reminded me of the breaded chicken cutlet panini you get in Italy in the bars we have along the highways[1]. For $ 6, this thing was good enough for both of us. Kinda heavy too. Perhaps next time I’ll try the Oaxacan, which sounds a bit more exotic to me. We also got a taco al pastor, which I really liked. I am not particularly fond of Mexican cuisine, and I don’t like hard shell tacos. Luckily, this is a soft taco(two tortillas, in fact). The chunky meat was flavorful and moist, although I would have liked it a bit more spicy. When I approached the deli case to get drinks, at first I though I would get a beer. Which I did: a bottle of Pacifico. But I also saw a can of something that I’ve never seen before, and decided to give it a try: Pulque fermented agave nectar. There was a guy with his family eating in front of the deli case; he saw me picking up the can and asked me if I liked pulque. I replied that I had no idea, since I’ve never tried it. He told me that his Grandmother was used to make pulque in Mexico, and that she would go to the mountains to get flowers to add to the fermented pulp[2]. He said that people in Mexico drink it together with soda, in particular one called«OK Soda». He then added that he couldn’t find it in Philadelphia and proceeded to get one for himself. Pulque is like a thick, milky syrup, not sweet, 6% ABV. I am not sure if it was best drank while eating torta and taco, but it is probably great with tequila or mexcal. — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — - [1] Aka Autogrill: [2] Not sure what he meant here: perhaps she was using agave plants that were in blossom???

This place is a good example of what NYC is all about. OK, not NYC, but Brooklyn. Brooklyn = Diversity. Need I say more? Alright, so I have been craving some pulparindo(Mexican candy made of tamarind paste which is salty and spicy) candy for some time. I started a thread, and thanks to Deanna W., I was able to find pulparindo in BK. It took us a bit of time to find this place, and we were not disappointed. The place is nothing to look at, but… don’t judge a book by its cover. This place was awesome for the following reasons: 1. Torta(Ginormous Mexican sandwich) — we ordered the milanesa de pollo and wow it was delicious. It was $ 6 and could easily feed 2 people. It is made with breaded chicken cutlets, chiles, lettuce, and tomato. A flavour explosion in your mouth. 2. Taco(Al pastor — «Shepherd style») — made with 2 tortillas, spicy pork, with salsa, cilantro. Very good, but a bit sloppy to eat. It is supposed to be cooked with pineapples, however, I didn’t taste any… 3. Pulque — alcoholic beverage, fermented agave plant and 6% ABV. Viscous in nature, but no carbonation. I liked this drink to wash down the torta + the taco. I think this drink would be great mixed with a carbonated drink like Sprite. Excellent new find! It also has 20% of your daily calcium needs, and its deemed nutritious! 4. Pulparindo —(25 cents/piece), I love this candy but it is definitely and acquired taste. You have to be a bit adventurous to like this candy and its not that sweet. Its mostly salty and spicy ;-) I am so glad I found this outside of Mexico! This place also sells many Mexican favorites, including chicharrones, and other Mexican candies and snacks. BTW…the guy at the register was really nice. Since he knew I liked pulparindo, he even threw in a few extras for FREE. Will def be back. Viva El Guerrero!

It’s not hard to tell that the owners of this Mexican bodega and restaurant are proud of their home state of Guerrero as the coat of arms is displayed proudly on the outside awning and menu. Opening up the door, the store opens spaciously with the food preparations on the left and colorful piñatas overhead. Normal convenience store goods mix with fresh fruit, Mexican fresh and dried products, and a small seating area towards the back. I decided to order a couple different items to get a good sampling of the menu and ingredients used and first chose the huarache($ 3.50) for which I topped it with carnitas, a slightly crispy fried pork. It was hands down the best huarache I have had in New York, with a perfect sandal tortilla filled with a thin layer of beans then topped with the meat, a layer of green salsa within, and all the fix ins. Less delicious was the tostada de pollo($ 2.50), although the chicken should be noted for a wonderful kick from the red chipotle sauce it is cooked in. I was slightly surprised that the whole thing was served cold, and while this did not make it inedible by any means, I would have preferred my meat to be warm. The cooking all seemed to be geared towards takeout, as three groups ahead of us took their bags when called and left. Foreseeing having the order wrapped up, I stepped forward to say I would be dining in and was met by surprise by the lady who could not see over the comically high counter. There was a group of four men enjoying their cemitas and a 2-liter of Coke, and we asked to share the back tables with them. Once the food was devoured, I began to enjoy the feel of the place even more, with our friendly table mates laughing and the upbeat salsa music. The only unfortunate part of the place is that despite the large glass refrigerators full of tempting cold beer, you are not allowed to drink alcohol in the restaurant, which would make for a perfect way to wash it all down.

For the longer review, see my earlier post. However, this is worth mentioning. Guerrero has completely changed their chicken taco recipe. And it blew me out of the water. The chicken is ridiculously moist, with large chunks of chicken, sauteed in a kind of red chipotle sauce. It is to die for. Seriously. I need to try a few more of their types of tacos, but if it continues on this pace, it may vault ahead of the top two in my incomplete, but always growing South Slope/Sunset Park taco list. And that in itself is an accomplishment.

Wow! What can I say, you must try the tortas(Mexican sandwich) specially«la torta milanesa de pollo». Mind blowing, delicicioso, OMG, it’s hands down the BESTTORTAS in South Slope/Mouth of Sunset Park. And the store looks very L.A.-Mex Style, you got the Guadalupe shrine in the back, Mexican magazines, Spanish music. The torta was so satisfying it gave me eye-tritis. Don’t settle for less, come on down to Guerrero food Center and have an authentic Mexican torta. No se van arrepentir amigos!

I was renovating a house around the corner from this place for a couple months and it didn’t take long before the call for lunch became«TACOTIME!» Don’t get a quesadilla, don’t get a torta, GETTACOS!!! The al pastor is my favorite. Big chunks of pineapple and marinated pork with fresh cilantro and onions in a soft and delicious flour tortilla. I would also recommend the Cesina(salted beef), Barbacoa(BBQ pork) and the Chorizo tacos. They’re 2 bucks a piece!!! Definitely avoid the tortas. Hot dogs substituting for grilled pork with shredded lettuce and a lot of mayo. It’s hard to believe that a place that does one thing so wrong can do another thing so right. My ‘go to’ taco shed, especially if I want to impress a guest with my knowledge of obscure Brooklyn eats.

The huaraches and tortas here are fantastic — especially the huarache with chorizo. A really fresh corn patty stuffed with beans, topped with onions, cilantro, cheese, crema and chorizo. A full meal for $ 3.50, can’t beat it. They’re nice people too, and the bodega itself isn’t bad. I’d recommend eating in at the small tables in back, this kind of food doesn’t always travel well.

The reviews of the bodega itself should not be conflated with the reviews of the food prep counter, which is terrific. Order tacos. I would say al pastor and lengua and maybe chorizo. Anything in the offal category should be sought out if your tastes are so oriented. But al pastor above all. This made up for the expensive drinks(for my wallet) at Quarter(which was indulgent always in allowing me to eat on their premises). I would not order tortas from here because when I lived on 21st St, there was a place about 10 blocks south on 5th Ave(I’ll google and Unilocal) which was better in that category.
