Elite Event at Sugarlounge!

How much do I love me a good BK Unilocal Event??? Eh??? I can’t hear you! That would be… a lot.
I heart non-​city events so so much, I cannot even find the words to express it. OK, OK, I’ll try. Including my best hipster lingo in this one as a tribute to BK, even though we weren’t in Billyburg. Only sellouts party there now, anyway.
Kudos on the back yard, even if it was slightly dreary out (you know your shiny Unilocaler faces made it bright out there, wakka wakka!) and the totes brill idea to have coolers of beer standing around to relieve congestion at the bar? Deck!
OK, I have exhausted my hipster lingo, but: y’all rock. The food was yummy, the drinks were good (although I switched to beer because while I am not an ungrateful asshat, I am a lazy asshat at times, and walking inside just seemed… hard.) I dug the chalkboard writings in the bathrooms, hope someone snapped a picture of those before we left. And of course, the Unilocal shwag that abounded was much loved as well. I resisted the urge to take a second lunch box because let’s face it, that’s just being a greedy asshat.

Two back-​to-​back Unilocal events?! What did I do to deserve this?*

I actually debated to myself if I should go to the Unilocal Event. It was a long day at work and I was worried that arriving at 830PM would be worth it.
Indeed it was. Plenty of food left — dumplings, cheese, bread, cold cuts, humus and veggies. Enough for seconds and third rounds without feeling like a selfish bastard. Drinks were good, and I mostly drank the beer. A little chilly for multiple mojitos.
Cupcakes were cute and delicious. I wanted to have a contest of who can stuff the most in their mouth. Maybe next time.
Great space in the backyard, complete with heaters and pool table. Friendly service and it’s actually a nice walk from the F/​G Bergen stop.
Nice meeting Clint, Julia and her plus one Leah, Wendy, Will and of course seeing Peter and the Unilocal staff again.

These Unilocal Elite events are the only times I ever truly have fun.
I think I need therapy.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t know people lived this far west in Brooklyn. After exiting the Bergen ‘F’ stop, we started walking … and walking … and walking, with no sherpa or camelbak full of whiskey to help us to our desired location.
A recipe for disaster? Not for Brooklyn Elites; it was merely a recipe for awesome. I even introduced a friend of mine to the world of Unilocal Eliteness, and now she might even begin writing some reviews. That’s how awesome Brooklyn Elites are.
I met a ton of new people, including Anne Hathaway*, the star of a Golden Corral commercial and Matt, who really could, literally, stumble home from Sugarlounge. I ate a ton of good food (dumplings and great hummus) and stuffed myself to the gills with tasty, tasty mojitos. And even though I might I have burned my poor keppe with the heat emanating from the heaters in the cute backyard area (pool table!), I would definitely consider coming back out this way on a night when Unilocal wasn’t doing it up right.
So, thanks to Peter and Jane, all you great Unilocalers and Sugarlounge for a great night out.
* — What? You didn’t see her? She was totally there.

Red Hook* is far.
But coming to this event was so worth the roundabout route my +1 and I took to get here. I think I have encouraged yet one more person to Unilocal.Righteous.
While I stayed out of the way most of the evening, I did a) meet new Unilocal friends and their +1’s b) have some awesome cupcakes (I liked the Strawberry Lemon much better than the Chocolate) c) drink some kick-​ass mojitos and expanded my appreciation of IPAs.
Yet another Brooklyn event that was pretty near perfect.
Thank you Peter, Jane and Unilocal crew for providing such perfection.
*apparently this was Carrol Gardens. I don’t know Brooklyn like most of you don’t know Queens. :P

Came to this event because I know many people I met on Unilocal were going to be there and was I glad that I went. I had so much fun reuniting with Unilocalers I’ve met previously and meeting new ones at the same time. And of course finally talking to some in person rather than sending compliments on their reviews. Had so much fun talking and meeting with many new faces.
Glad that it did not rain because the garden was pretty neat. I loved the mini cupcakes, they were so yummy. I loved the cheese and baby carrots with hummus! The mojitos were great too! The bathroom was pretty cool, everyone seems to be fascinated by the whole chalk idea. No wonder why people took so long in the bathrooms lol.
The event itself was great, but without the awesome people I already knew and newly met, this event wouldn’t have been this much fun! But of course thanks to Peter D and Jane K for putting this together!
It was nice seeing Jocy C + Em C, Judy K, Jenn L, Wing L, Steven C, Laura A. And of course by surprise Mark K, who told me he wasn’t going to make it, but he did! Yay! It was nice to finally meet the other Sandy C hehe. Yup it’s true there’s two of us with the same names running around last night. Got to meet other fellow Unilocalers for the first time — Rachel A, Pearl K, Vivian H, Matteo R, Will C, Isabella W, those two guys sitting by the bathroom (sorry I forgot your names, but I can barely even remember my own and I had a name tag on… this is what happens when I drink). And of course meeting the +1’s! Tina, Cece and Marko. It was nice talking to Jen H, thanks for all the entertainment hehe. I apologize in advance if I forgotten anyone or if I didn’t say hi to you at the event, but if I don’t say hi first, don’t be a stranger next time!

There were so many cameras and photos snapped, I can’t find all the pics.
How is it possible no one took a photo of what someone wrote about Peter D. on the bathroom wall? It was a good message, something about him being a cutie. It’s a cool concept though, chalk boards in the bathrooms. Keeps you entertained and the messages change nightly.
Saw so many people and met some new ones. I wish I got around more but I was perfectly snug at the table right next to the bar. The perfect spot to get Mojito’s and snacks. Although when I finally got up to get cupcakes, I got caught red handed with 5 of them in my hand. I swear I only ate 3!
The cupcakes were great! I loved the frosting, not sugary but creamy and light. The cake itself was also very good. My favorite was the Chocolate Vanilla. After I found out what the little chocolate thing was on top (chocolate covered rice puffs). Also I adore the edible gold stars on them.
The Sugarlounge is a gem. I loved the back garden, though it got so chilly after the sunset.
A suggestion for the name tags. Can we get them pre-​printed with ouR photo on them?

Originally I was going to give this event 4 stars but since everyone had a great time, I thought I’d inflate it to five stars. The Elite Event at Sugarlounge! was Woohoo! As good as it gets! The staff was attentive and friendly, drinks were abundant, the grapes were good, I was reunited with my FTR Nine Cakes and there was patio space. Great venue and just the right amount of people. Thanks peter d for not striking me off of the guest list.
It was so nice to spend time with Sandy C again and finally meet the other Sandy C. She is also sweet. I smiled at Wing and then disappeared into the crowd. We’ll hang out more next time! Thank you bbq masters Jocy and Em for scoring a table for the group. You guys are the best! Judy K I am so sorry I kept you waiting on the subway platform. I will buy you a loaf of bread from Panya. James F I skipped American Idol and Glee just to see you. Steven C I hope you were able to connect with my friend. Roddy A can we start an official Jersey City club? I think we could have like 5 members. Jonathan G you are not shy. You are AWESOME and amazing! Quit pretending to be antisocial. If it weren’t past midnight, I’d have written this review in the form of HIMYM. Smurfette you are too cool and Matteo R you can just tell Mackler to move over.
The event ended too quickly but as usual more than half lingered. I was able to spend time chatting with Laura A and then joined the table to catch up with West Coast buddy Emily C and BK friends Isabella W and Marco. I also met the oh so popular and talented straight faced Will C. It was an awesome time and thanks to a special Unilocaler I am now well versed in Keni Styles. Google it.
Sometimes Manhattan is overrated and its good to venture out to the other boroughs. I can’t wait to see you all again. Don’t make me wait until the next BK event, especially you my new bff!

Special Thanks to Peter D & Jane K. for organizing such an extraordinary event! The venue was perfect for the amount of people in attendance. A lot of familiar faces were seen! A lot of online friends were finally introduced in person. An overall great night indeed.

The Great:

2) Familiar Faces! Always great to see the conglomerate again
3) New Faces! Great to finally meet Jocy, Jae, & Jenn in person.
4) Gatorade Containers filled with Lighthouse Ale in the Garden
5) Spectacular Mini Cupcakes offered by NineCakes! I ate 12!
6) My behind was grabbed about 5 times…
7) The venue! The garden provided the nice outdoor ambiance for banter
The Not So Great:
1) Not being able to dump Ice Cold Water from the Gatorade Containers on Peter D!
Needless to say, I had a great night!

I was lucky enough to attend both Elite events this week, and well my heart belongs to Brooklyn. I am also partial to this venue for other reasons, but let’s save that story for another time. This is the quintessential Brooklyn establishment: laid back atmosphere, friendly people, smart people, good-​looking people, witty people, good food.
Every time I go to a Manhattan event, it feels like a mob scene. Like you have to fight people to get food and drinks. I have my ninja stars ready! I guess it is just b/​c of the shear number of people that turn out. In contrast, the Brooklyn events are more manageable (for me), less people, more food (it didn’t run out), and unending flow of alcohol (mojitos and Lighthouse Ale all night, and the bartenders looked relaxed, and not stressed). Not to mention, this venue had a Buddha statue!
Highlights of the night:
1. Mini-​cupcakes that were moist (thanks to NineCakes)
2. Lighthouse Ale and bottled beers in ice buckets all night long
3. Food that didn’t run out (good dumplings — the Asian in me approves)
4. Writing on the bathroom wall
5. Seeing old friends (Wendy C, Jin L, James F, Chun L, Richard B, Cassy S, Jennifer R, Clint H, Lucy L, Ginn C)
6. Meeting Unilocal friends in person (Will C, Wing L, Jenn L, Sandy C, Judy K, Rachel A)
7. Making new friends (Catherine J, Jordan W, Anthony L)
8. Talking to +1s (Dahn –from Transylvania, Erik — with the wild hair, Adam H — only wants to give places stars)
9. Wow Peter D stayed the whole night, how was the after-​party?
10. Brooklyn in da house! Holla!

Hi, my name is roderick and I am the new intern here at Unilocal.What, you didn’t see me? I was the one writing out name tags at the start of the event. I am so new and fresh to the world of Unilocal internships, I had to write out Vivian’s name twice, just to get it perfect. Needless to say, that job was quickly taken away and given to a more qualified replacement.
My other job was to fetch drinks and food for various ladies during the evening. Believe me, it was all my pleasure. I had absolutely no qualms about standing on line at the bar for drinks and food.
Because I got there early, I was able to sample the food and drinks before the crowds came in. The mojitos were so delicious and sweet and not strong at all (hi Rae). The Fire Island beer was really delicious. The cupcakes from Ninecakes were amazing. And how about the lumpia shanghai they had? Sure, they were called «egg rolls» but whatever, I know Filipino food when I see it.
My only disappointment with the evening was not seeing anyone break out the Electric Slide. I was so ready to see it, ‘cuz it’s electric — boogie woogie woogie!
As a reward, my new boss peter allowed me the honor of chauffeuring him to Red Hook for post-​work drinks and pulled pork sandwiches. Needless to say, what happens in Red Hook stays in Red Hook (especially on the ride heading back to Manhattan).
So yes, this was my last day as the intern here at Unilocal before heading to my new job: personal assistant to Josh Lyman, Chief of Staff for President Santos.
PS I hate to be all «Village Voice Personals» here but I need to know: when I was getting drinks at the bar, there was a lovely woman standing next to me. She was nice enough to get the drinks for me but I stupidly forgot to get her name. See the picture above? That’s her. And I don’t think I’m going out on a limb by saying that in a world full of beautiful people, she is the most beautiful of them all. Yeah, that’s not going overboard, right?

The venue is wonderful; I’ve been here a couple of years ago (fond memories!), but didn’t know they had such a nice patio! Also, Freddy and all the people who work at Sugarlounge are some of the nicest, most friendly, and laid back people I’ve ever met. Awesome, AWESOME service!
It was also cool to talk to Greg from Fire Island Beer Company, and find out more about their wonderful beers. Dude, your roommate, though, the pool shark… he was a mean machine!
Food was great (hey, there were leftovers!): I loved the variety with the cheeses, coldcuts, fruits, pickles, pita, hummus, dumplings and rolls. Plus the wonderful mini-​cupcakes from nearby Nine Cakes.
Also, really great music selection, with the likes of Thievery Corporation, Bonobo, and Cinematic Orchestra. I’m impressed!
Shout outs to my brand new Unilocal friends Clint H, Catherine J, Jenn L, Jennifer R, Judy K, Sandy C, and Adam H (aka Paco). You guys rock!

The one thing I’ve discovered after having been to a few of these Unilocal events is that the free food and free drinks are secondary to the awesome Unilocalers that gather at these events. The event could have been hosted on a dirty sidewalk while giving out only hot dogs and tap water, and I’ll still have a fun time thanks to such great company as:
Judy k, Jenn L, Both Sandy C, Jocy C (and her other half, non– Unilocaler Em), Laura A, Isabella W., Steven C., Matteo R, Vivian H., and Will C.
For those of you that I met for the first time, it was great to finally put a live face to everybody that I see so often on Unilocal.Good to finally meet you in person Chun L. if you are reading this. I apologize to Rachel A. for not finding the time to say hi when you were in our group before losing you at the the event. If I forgot anybody else, let me apologize to them also.
Sugarlounge was a little far from the nearest subway station but having two great friends and fellow Unilocalers walk with me helps to make the blocks seem ever so much shorter. Once there, I discovered that the place hosting the event is a great little spot with a lovely garden. Thank you for hosting all us drunkards and bottomless pits.
These Brooklyn events from my experiences so far always have been smaller in numbers for those that participates, but never any less amazing (sometimes even more so than the Manhattan events because it’s even easier to socialize when the venue is smaller).
Thank you Peter D. and Jane K. for hosting these events. I especially want to thank Peter D. for these first words that he said to us when we first saw him at the event «There are cupcakes at the back garden. You need to get some.» They were great.
I also want to thank the sky for holding back the rain till after the event is over or else it would have been an orgy of bodies on top of each other without the garden available to be used.

You know, after you walk miles and miles to get to a Unilocal event… the LEAST you can expect is a delicious mojito, and this place had that covered! That’s not why I gave tonite’s Unilocal event 5 stars, i mean, it was a combination of alot of things, but the Mojitos definitely helped this weary traveler go from the trainstation to Sugarlounge, which is apparently lightyears away from Bergen Street on the G train…
Honestly, what more can someone ask for? Fun Unilocalers, Dumplings (YUM YUM), Mojitos, and more Dumplings… clearly a 5 star nite… glad to see everyone out!!! See you next time!

Great venue for my first true Elite event! It was like a UYE but with a few more people. A ton of fun grabbing snacks and drinks (yay to mojitos!) with everyone. If I missed mingling with you, I will catch you next time. I felt like a true member of the club with eliters and threadsters commenting on my Kon costume and Talk one-​liners.
A huge thanks to Jane and Peter for throwing the event and making things happen. Peter, I’m holding you to that Unilocal shotglass. Thank you again!

I have major love for these events because I finally get to put faces/​thumbnails to names. Let’s face it though — while a huge amount of people seem to have cat pictures on their profile, I have yet run into a cat at an Elite Event. I’ll keep my eyes peeled though!
