Brookdale Hospital Medical Center

To give this place even one star is far too many! I took my 3 year old son to the ER on Wed with a swollen lymph node on his right side late after noon, we had to walk through this area filled with sick patients that filled the hallways sitting on the beds coughing and half exposed all the way until we reached the Pediatrics area. To make a long story short the young Indian Dr who came to examine him had no idea what was going on with him so she called over another Dr to examine him. They prescribed him antibiotics to take for 10 days until his swelling went down. So great you would think everything was fine right? WRONG! By Friday morning i was right back with my child in the ER and he had a HUGE rash all over his private area. It was so bad my son was screaming his lungs out. I’m a huge hygiene freak when it comes to my son so this wasn’t a regular diaper rash from an unchanged diaper. This was the result of the antibiotics which they gave him. The Dr who was on duty came over to examine him for 2 minutes and proceeded to tell me this a rash and nothing she can do. I tried to explain to her about his previous visit and how I feel its due to the strong antibiotics he was taking she looked me like i was absolutely nuts and told me flat out no the two have nothing to do with each other she would not let me get a word in before she walked away as if I had said nothing to her. I repeatedly asked the nurses or some Vaseline or something to put on my sons rash to sooth him because i wasn’t able to put a diaper on him without it. For over an hour we awaited and no one bothered to come to us until i asked again for the 100^th time where they informed us they don’t have anything like that (Aren’t we at a hospital??) I had to go to the pharmacy and wait 20 minutes to purchase something for him. Finally they came over with the discharge papers telling me they will change the kind of antibiotics and give him a lower dosage. They refuse to admit this is a direct cause of the first medication that gave me. I looked over the discharge papers and I didn’t understand the medical term they used as a diagnose and I proceeded to ask the same rude Dr if she has any information on it. She flat out told me to goggle it they don’t have any information on it (WHATTTT??? Are you not a DOCTOR???) I was fuming at this point! She then told me once she went back to her computer oh all i can see is information in Spanish, do you speak Spanish? I just had about enough. I can not believe the unprofessional cruel matter these so called doctors and nurses deal with these sweet babies that come in here.
To make this story even worse I took my son to his Dr right after the hospital because I just cant trust nothing they told me, soon as his Dr saw him and saw the rash he had she instantly couldn’t believe how bad it was. Her exact word where omg He is so sore! I showed her the medication they gave for my son and instantly told me they were giving him way too much dosage for his weight (Which they didn’t bother to find take). Even the new antibiotics they gave him was still too much SMFH! Thank God i went to his Dr to verify everything because my baby would have suffered so much more! This is the worst hospital I will make to file a formal complaint against them. This is completely unacceptable!

They’ve recently revamped, reconstructed and redone their pediatrics emergency room and it sucks. Parent with sick children now must sit in the waiting area with the adults who are ill, mentally ill, physically ill, junkies, angry individuals and etc etc. then to get to the treatment area you and your child have to walk through the adult emergency treatment area. It’s disgusting, unhealthy & dangerous. There are patients who have on hospital gowns but their body parts are exposed, there is little supervision and it’s just not a safe environment. I had to walk my two week old baby through this disaster when she became colic. There were people arguing and cussing and about to come to blows. It was ridiculous. It would never return to this place. Who ever thought of this concept, must not have children and didn’t think it through.

Brought there by ambulance after car accident. One of the dirtiest hospitals I’ve seen. I don’t know if it’s the same all the time but there were a suspicious amount of homeless and mentally ill patients. Although the medical staff I dealt with were polite and professional to me (maybe because I told them I am a nurse) They were disrespectful to many of the other patients. Would never return if I had the choice.

The common name for Brookdale is Brookdeath. The two times that I had to go to the ER it was a long and tedious journey that resulted with me having to go to the doctor. I know I’m suppose to do a follow up anyway, but even after spending all night in the emergency room I want to walk out with at least a diagnosis of what ails me. The staff is rude and the doctors seem incompetent. Walk in with a hope and a prayer when you go to this hospital.

Brookdale has gotten a bad rep for many reasons. But to my surprise, it’s not as bad as what many people think. I suppose it depends on which care unit and floor you’re at. But the nurses and doctors on the 10 floor treat my 93 year grandma with the utmost care and respect. Brookdale Hospital may not be as nice looking or have the best talented staff as Mount Sinai or North Shore (the other two hospitals my family usually prefers) but their staff appear to be more caring and have better bedside manners. Perhaps it was a change in the organization as they went through a bankruptcy phase in the past. Yes, the surrounding neighborhood is not the safest but it’s not like you’re moving into the neighborhood. I just wish they offer free parking or reduced parking fees for patients and visitors. Also, easy access to the subway station would be ideal too. Like other reviewers said, the facility could use some updating, which will help them revamp their image.

Don’t go here if you don’t have to. The building is old and in serious need of updating and a several good coats of paint. Worst of all, the administration is majorly incompetent! We brought my father in for a procedure and we were told to be there for 8:30 am. He wasn’t take to the OR until 11:30 and the surgery didn’t start until 1:30 pm. At 8:30 pm we left the hospital with him still in the PACU (post anesthesia care unit). He was scheduled to spend the night but was never given a room. We came back the next morning to find that he was the only patient still on the recovery unit. The nurses hassled us about wanting us to sit with him because the unit he was on didn’t allow visitors. However, no effort was made to give him a room because he was being discharged that day. The nurses were more than happy to sit there and do nothing while dodging calls to report to the ICU and wasting all of our times. We finally left at 2:30 pm with a partially filled prescription because surprise surprise the pharmacy ran out of medicine. Don’t do it!

Was taken here by ambulance after having an accident. First it took them an hour to realize that they forgot to sign me in to the hospital. They misdiagnosed my injury. Asked to see an Orthopedist and was told i couldn’t see one since nothing was broken. i guess a torn tendon doesn’t count as something being broken.
Pray you don’t end up in this terrible hospital.

This is for the SICU 6^th floor. Thank you for taking care of my father while in your care. He spent a total of almost 2 months in SICU during the holiday season ¹²⁄₂₀₁₄ thru ⁰¹⁄₂₀₁₅. The nursing care he received was unremarkable. Very informative and sensitive to the needs of not only to my father but to the other patients as well. His last appointment with Dr. Cornacchia was on Thursday 10/​08/​2015. Being a health care professional in the same field and being on the other side of the fence, I have a new perspective for the Nursing profession. To Dr. Cornacchia and the Neurosurgery team, thank you, you are gifted and I will recommend you to anyone that asks. A special thank you to the following RN’s: Tull, Johnson, Sinclair, Pierre, Grant, Saxena and Campbell. PCT Trisvan, CNA Gauze and Unit clerk on day and eve shift. I took my father back to SICU after seeing Dr. Cornacchia on 4 and the look on my father face and the nursing staff: Priceless!

«As a New York State Registered Nurse I’m appalled at my recent visit to two of the cities prominent ERs.
On September 3^rd I was to NYM by my wonderful OBGYN (although considering he sent me there…). The previous day I went for my 1^st sonogram at 12 weeks. There was reason to believe that I was carrying an ectopic pregnancy of the rarest kind I.e. A cervical implantation. NYM imaging center is state of the art. The staff is friendly, courteous and sympathetic. This makes them very popular and increases the wait time to about 2 hours or more during peak hours.
My imaging results were worst than predicted, not only the less than 1% of all ectopic pregnancy, cervical implantation but also with a placental attachment on my old C– section scar. Bottom line I was going to bleed out!!! It didn’t matter wether I left and the rupture occurred on the street or if I stayed and had „corrective“ surgery in a pristine OR with amazing doctors surrounding me on all sides. It was simply inevitable.
Naturally, the good doctor convinced me to shoot for option B.
It was then that the nightmare began. After waiting several hours just to be triaged (with what is such an emergency my doctor refused to let me leave the hospital) I was placed in a holding area with the infirmed. On one side the was a woman suffering recurring episodes of chills and extremely high fevers. When she shivered the entire bed shook. These are classic signs of systemic infections both viral (most likely) and bacterial. This woman may have had a contagious flu strain.
On my other side there was an elderly man who kept peeking at me across the curtain and coughing a weird repeating cough. Each episode lasted at least a minute. And there in the middle of this virulent sea of infection was me, a perfectly healthy 31 year old, with no prior health problems or hospitalizations save for a previous C — section. I must admit I was severely pissed off. So much so that the despite the risk to my life I was ready to get the hell out of there.
Mr Mayor and those of you responsible by for running the HHC and state hospitals, I hope you are paying attention, I this finds its way to you. For these and many more atrocities, I hold you liable, I hold you accountable. When you accept responsibility for such a large vibrant population and you neglect just one tiny single area like this (even if you’re doing and excellent job elsewhere, though I highly doubt that, Remember, as human beings, it’s the worst of us that sticks out, no matter how much good you it’s the places that you that will be remembered by historians, and you are failing my beloved city) the people will remember, I will remember, and forever associate your reign over this city and these life saving organizations as a failure.
Forever in my mind I will remember that at the worst point in my history, at the end of a vibrant new life, instead of grieving for the child, for the miracle I was about to lose, I was wasting the precious last hours, minutes, seconds of my unborn childs life worrying about lying in a state of the art ER (in the most advanced city in the world with one of the highest population densities) for over 15 hours until an orderly from the OR came to rescue me. And the entire time, me, a perfectly healthy 31 NYC RN was surrounded on not one but two sides by people who obviously severely ill.
Not only did I have to worry about the lost of my child, the risk of me dying, the possibility of never being able to have children again (if I was bleeding out on the OR table and there was no other option I would have lost my uterus as well in a bid to save my life) but also leaving the hospital with a nosocomial infection and returning home to my 2 healthy children.
This is not the NYC way. We don’t run with the, we lead, they follow. If this is the standard of care the followers have to aspire to then it may be too late to save the city. Still you have to try. For the sake of people around the city like me (and I’ve met them, they are legion) who have suffered horrible experiences at this level of care, you have to try. Exhaust every means available to fix this grievous malpractice of healthcare.
You are failing my city. You have failed my. It was an arrow to the womb.
So I will be watching. I will observe your efforts to rectify this appalling state of Medicine .
And until I’m satisfied I will remember. I make sure that New York remembers. And when your terms are done I will make sure that history remembers that because of you the New York City hospital system failed those it’s hypocratic oath swore not to harm!!!»
I’m including my review of NYM in this because that is where my nightmare September began. Now onto Brookdale (Don’t worry baby sooner or later you will be mine and I will take Excellent care of you).
As Dragon Empress Blair is getting ready to her first public appearance, her coming of age ball, I have been working like a woman possessed!!!

I dislike this hospital, but l will visit anyone that’s here. It’s not all bad as long as IM NOT STAYING. I don’t mind going to the emergency room for my issues but when it comes to long term stays I will go to Methodist. I’m not going to bash the people that work there but I will say they need an etiquette class.

They don’t even deserve one star.
I am disgusted with the service in this hospital. My sister got cleaning supplies in her eyes. Her manager brought her in to the ER. She sat in the ER for 2 ½ hours with no help. Her eyes were burning, red and puffy. No one took her to flush her eyes out. We got up to ask how long before she was seen, the DR told her she had 6 people ahead of her. My question is how could my sister sit in the waiting area for 2 ½ hours with chemicals in her eyes and you tell her she has to wait. In the event my sister went blind who is to blame? Even if she sue no amount of money can give her back her eye sight.

Ok hospital but needs more staff and needs to be cleaner for a hospital. always over crowded and sometimes the wait to be seen is forever. I do like that they have rapid HIV testing Monday — Friday and anyone can walk in the emergency room and take a 20 min test to know there status.

Human resources department is a joke. The Director of HR was interviewing me with the attention span of a fly. Every time the phone rang or an email came through he paused the interview to attend to other matters which wasted my time by about 20 minutes. The director then had the nerve to critique my experience, education and salary requirements when he has the most unprofessional looking set of derelicts working in HR. Please. Spare your self.

My father had a procedure here (had an appointment) involving Admissions, and then «Same day Surgery». The staff we encountered were quite friendly and helpful, we had no problems at all. We finished everything in a few hours, no complaints.
P. S: I was also born at this hospital, a few months premature. Very grateful for this establishment.

Full disclosure: This review is part of my «Crappy Medical Clinics and Doctors Tour», where – after several hellish years of service from various places – I’ve finally had enough and have decided to start hitting every rotten, stinking place I’ve been to and alert the general public about the pathetic excuse for places they call clinics. This time I’ll be reviewing Brookdale Hospital ER.
STORY #1: HURT YOUR ARM? LET’S INTERROGATE YOU
In February 2015, my sister fell and slipped on ice back in February and was in agony for the next 12 hours, unable to move her arm at all by the next morning. Although it could’ve very well been a bad sprain, it made sense for her to get her arm checked out for a fracture.
We got to Brookdale at around 8:30 a.m. We signed the paperwork. We then waited… and waited… and waited… for hours. So did all the ER patients in the waiting room, some who had already been waiting there for at least three hours before we had even arrived. It must have been around noon or so when finally my sister was seen by somebody and by then her arm was practically singing an aria; she was in such pain.
First, she was immediately grilled to death about her marital situation, as if suggesting that she was trying to cover up for a domestic assault. Why the hell they would do that is anyone’s guess, but you can imagine how insulting and humiliating this was, not to mention ridiculous and unnecessary.
Then the doctor merely looked at her arm, touched it here and there, determined it was a sprain, gave my sister pain meds and sent her her merry way – no X-​Ray, no other tests, no nothing. Not even a sling, even though she couldn’t move her arm. In fact, after being discharged, we had to go back and ask the staff for one.
Oh, hold onto your hats, folks, because it gets better!
STORY #2: SORRY, BUT THE DOPPLER MACHINE JUST WENT HOME FOR THE DAY; COME BACK AGAIN TOMORROW
In March 2015, I developed severe edema of the legs, which later turned out to be from an anemia so severe that I was up for a possible transfusion. Already having had a horrible experience at Brookdale ER, I decided to go to Urgent Care across the street instead. The doctor at UC then sent me to ER anyway, saying I had to go because I needed to take a doppler test to check for thrombosis. She even said she would call the ER ahead of time so they’d know I was coming.
I went to the ER and told registration that I had just come from Urgent Care. The person behind the desk went, «Okay,» and asked for my name. I signed the paperwork. It was 12:30. I waited… and waited… and waited. It was not until 5:30 when I was called, and by then my legs and feet had turned into tree trunks. The doctor seemed irritable as she asked me questions about my condition and examined me. Then – isn’t this just grand – she started raising her voice. Why? Now that it was 5:30 p.m., the doppler machine was «closed» (her words exactly), and I SHOULD have triage nurse when I first arrived at 12:30 that I had come in from Urgent Care. If I had, I would’ve been seen immediately.
Oh, excuse you? I thought the doctor from Urgent Care had called the ER. I thought I had even informed ER registration that I had just come from there. And why are you yelling at me trying to blame me for having missed the doppler machine when it was your crappy hospital’s slowness that is the reason why that happened? And what’s this crap about a machine being «closed» after a certain hour? I didn’t realize medical equipment at an ER had 9 to 5 shifts. Do they get benefits and overtime, too? Wow, who knew?
Whatever. So then, after having been forced to wait FIVE EFFING HOURS to be blamed for having missed the doppler machine, I was then sent to «Area B» of Brookdale Hospital to wait for a bed, which was filled to the brim with every type of grave medical emergency you could imagine, many of them perps with full police escort in tow. Here it was, now 6:00 p.m. with possible thrombosis, and I was supposed to be waiting for a bed in this madhouse filled with gun shot, stabbing, and assault victims. I’m generally a patient person, but enough was enough and I walked out on my tree trunk legs. Luckily, I made it out of there alive, but if I had died from thrombosis, Brookdale would’ve had a nice, fat juicy lawsuit on its hands.
So there you have it. Don’t even bother coming to Brookdale ER if you can help it. Its ER is NOT an ER at all. It’s the last place you see before you walk out in a huff after waiting half the day to see anyone, or drop dead from lack of attention.

My mom had a knee surgery here. I was so worried back then. but mom is well now. Nurses were very kind in the recovery room. They answered my questions and did the cares rapidly. If I have to go to hospital with whatever reasons, I’ll definitely come back here.

Worst Hospital In New York PERIOD!!! Beware. Ghetto nurses gossiping, not payin attention to the patients not to mention the fact that you see some pretty crazy stuff in that hospital i guess because its in brownsville. I came in with an asthma attack and they calmly told me to take a seat then proceeded to ask me my name and adress before giving me any air… mind you im having an asthma attack i cant breathe!!! hate this hospital. only forced to go here because its 2 blocks from my house !

The hospital gets one star for the pleasant attitude of the staff, But a big –4 stars for the lack of supplies for its maternity patients. NO blankets, NO Pillows, NO mesh underwear to change, NO hats for the babies, DIRTY Linens, Dirty Gowns, Food SUCKS. Just Horrible!!!

Sorry no stars would be my opinion!!! But you have to put atleast one to be able to review… Dirty, smells and the employees are nasty as well, over schedule patients terribly. Please do not need to go to the restroom while here!!! Will be making sure my dad transfers to Sloan Kettering…

My niece was admitted here and me being her only relative on the East Coast, I spent 2 days visiting and talking with Doctors.
Never have i experiences a more convoluted, disorganized, communications-​challenged group of «professionals.» Nothing they said they’d do was done and every request I made was answered differently depending on whom I asked.
You know those magic 8-​balls? That’s about the level of confidence I had in these people’s ability to properly diagnose. In fact unless bleeding to death, having a heart attack or getting bit by 20 rattlesnakes, I don’t see any reason someone would choose to go here.
