Torn between 2 and 3 stars, but I guess i’m feeling generous. My husband and I were looking forward to trying this place(for his birthday, no less!), but we ended up somewhat disappointed. The room is pleasant and we were seated right away, which was nice, but it was also suspiciously dead in there on a Saturday night. To be fair, there were some people sitting outside(I’ve never understood the allure of outdoor dining on a hot humid night), but the place just didn’t feel very lively. Waiter was a little weird but nice enough, and cocktails were fine but nothing special. Now for the food: House pickles were good but would have benefited from pairing with something neutral(bread or crackers or something). Among the«small plates» we had the white asparagus with Hollandaise and prosciutto and the fried brussels sprouts. Asparagus was a total, tasteless dud(and overpriced at $ 16). How those ingredients could have so little flavor was beyond me. Brussels sprouts were tasty but would have been better as a side dish as opposed to an appetizer. It was just a big bowl of sprouts – not all that interesting to eat on its own. Main courses were better: I had the schnitzel which was really delicious, and hubby had the filet mignon which he found too salty but otherwise good. Overall we enjoyed the dinner but not as much as we’d like for the price(it came out over $ 160 with cocktails and wine). Not sure we’ll be back.

I was looking for a nice restaurant for after a performance of Judas Kiss at BAM, and this place came up. The décor is lovely, dark paneling but not dark space, lots of little things to catch your eye. We were seated right away, and started with drinks and the cheese fondue, served with very good fresh croutons and apple pieces. While I’d have liked the fondue to be a bit thicker, it was still very tasty, nice mix of cheeses and a good bite. I had a drink called the Mercado, and LOVED it! We all chose the pork schnitzel for dinner, served with red potato salad(german-style), pickled cucumber slices, lingonberry jam and applesauce. We were all quite pleased with the dish and cleared our plates. My roommate commented that she’d come back here just for that potato salad alone! The only dessert we opted for was the Lemon Buttermilk Panna Cotta — light, served with a finely chopped pink grapefruit and basil oil. Who’d have thought that combination would work? But work it did, extremely well, very refreshing and immensely perfect for the summer. Our waiter was charming and attentive(although he slipped on the water — we had to ask a few times — but the place WAS busy), and we liked the atmosphere. Good choice!

We enjoyed our meal at Berlyn. It’s great German/Austrian fare that they do really well. Our server couldn’t have been nicer and more helpful. The restaurant wasn’t full when we arrived. There was a couple sitting at a table for four, both on the same side facing the room, sort of European style and a cute table in the corner for two sitting both at the banquette which we asked to sit at but were denied. Instead, we were seated at a table by the waiters/station with one of us facing the wall. Later two other guys were seated in the corner even though they didn’t want to be there so it wasn’t as though it was reserved. Why does this happen? I feel as though we were dissed.

Great place and great food and drink. The schnitzel and curry bratwurst were both delicious. The house pickles come with pickled veggies. The pretzel was fine. Everything was great with little exception. The ice cream sundae was the only forgettable part of the meal. The coffee ice cream was fine with a frozen texture. If you are going to the bam, go early to this place and make a reservation.

Completely shocked by the ambiance… I thought Berlyn would be another new, run of the mill hipster bar/restaurant that cloaks Fort Greene. But no. I loved the ambiance, it feels like a refined lodge/living room. So many interesting books, kitsch… This was completely shocking considering that it is across the street from BAM. The potato pancakes with smoked trout were tasty… My drink was just ok — but I’m keeping the door open for full judgment after my next trip. I was really only there for a quick catch up with a grad school friend. I’ll be back and I look forward to it.

We were running a bit late, so I called to tell the restaurant staff as much; the reply was perfectly pleasant, and I didn’t worry. We sat, and then waiter, Conor, offered us free sparkling or still water, which was delightful. I opted for the fried Brussels sprouts, which were incredibly delicious; hubs got the gem salad, which was tasty. We both ordered the Wiener schnitzel, which was delicious, especially after we subbed out the potato salad with cabbage that was to DIE for, and some of the most delicious spaetzle I’ve ever had in my life. Dessert was strudel for me and chocolate bread pudding for him, and the best drip coffee I’ve ever had – seriously. I don’t drink drip coffee. Ever. I found the desserts not sweet enough, but hubs loved them both; bread pudding was earthy chocolate and tart cherry, just hot he likes it. Service was impeccable. We’ll be returning, and soon!

Fantastic! Night cap after BAM and it was lovely. Do try the warm apple strudel and Betty Carter.

The mixologist at Berlyn, Yi, is superb at making original and classic cocktails. Yi’s got an award winning cocktail which my girlfriend said«it was a true treat in a glass, with lavender garnishes that lead you into a soothing, dreamy experience.» We’ve now been there twice and have found the drinks and the overall atmosphere at the bar to be very warm and cozy. We prefer to sit at the bar and snack – and I’d recommend the potato pancakes with the smoked trout. The pretzels are also a nice snack.

Pretty good experience here. We arrived at 5pm when it opened and were seated without a reservation. Drinks and food were pretty spot on without being too fancy or expensive. Interesting décor and a very modern take on German food.

Visited with a few friends and all of us ordered an entrée and a drink. I ordered the«Jon Ashe» and the«Arctic char» for dinner. Both were very good. The place is supposedly German but was different than the other German food I’ve had — I liked this place!

This is place is ok, 3.5 stars. I like the warm, modern décor in here and it’s in a nice location across the BAM. Food is a more modern/inventive play on traditional German dishes… my fiancé and I came around 830 – 9; we had a res even though there were plenty of seats. I think people were at a show — lots of people came in as we were leaving. The FOH isn’t too great about picking up the phone and taking ressies. fyi. Anyway, our waiter was great. she was a little too attentive and food came out quick. We shared the cara cara blood orange salad — meh(not much of a salad, grapefruit and cara cara orange side by side with some tossed greens). We then had warm pretzel with mustard; pretzel was definitely not homemade or fresh, because it got hard fast… and it was way to greasy/oily. The mustard is more on the honey mustard side. we then had the house pickles which was the best thing but nothing earth shattering — just an assortment of pickled cauliflower, carrot, etc– they had celery, guess that was interesting. We then had for mains, the beef goulash which was a good beef stew with sour cream and spatzle… I don’t love beef goulash but my fiancé said it was ok. I had the vegetarian spatzle which was spatzle and spring veggies– some were meh, some were good– I liked the roasted brussel sprouts but felt the carrots for instance did not add much. It came with a poached egg which was perfectly done. Overall, the spatzle was inventive, some of it was fried. But overall the dish lacked flavor, it needed like salt or bacon or something. Portions were big and presentation was nice. We drank a house IPA on draft and a glass of Gruner, my favorite white from Austria… we passed on dessert but they had strudel, to sundaes to panna cotta(lol random) Think dinner came to $ 100. Fine to check out given the area is nice but would not return because the food is just meh.

Wonderful place, lovely atmosphere. Good food and drink selection, very friendly and attentive staff. Right across from BAM — make sure to stop by if you are in the area!

Return? Yes, not as a stand-alone destination spot but perfect meeting spot before attending a play or movie at BAM. Atmosphere(3+) Plenty of elbow space, easy to carry on a conversation. 30+ BAM/Brooklyn crowd. Tiny bar Food(3+) — I’ve eaten here a handful of times and have always been pleased. More of an appetizer menu than full belly entrée menu. Most recently we had the watrecress salad(4+), fried Brussel Sprouts(4 for flavor — but 3 for small portion size), and Frikadellen meatballs(4). Service(4) Friendly, attentive Cost = Total tab before tax/tip was $ 64 with two cocktails

Delightful small German bistro, across the street from BAM. I jumped in for a drink and a bite, before a show, and it was a lovely experience. Service was super nice and quick. Our server knows we had to see a show, and was attentive and prepared with timing and check. Great selection of beers, of course, and possible bites. I shared a cheese platter and a pâté platter. Both came with some fruit, bread, jams, and nuts. Right now is full if Christmas lights decorations, but the all atmosphere isn’t too overwhelming.

Great cocktails, especially the Pirate Jenny and Berlyn Im Frühling(think Bols with lots of ginger thrown in). Solid cheese plate and oh boy do they give you a great big pile of pickles! Potato latkes with smoked trout and the cheese plate were also nice. Not super special but nice. Did I mention the cocktails? Our server, Britni, was attentive and very, funny.

If you’re a meat-eater, like my 2 companions who had the duck & the weiner schnitzel, you’ll have many great meals to choose from on the menu while sitting in the hunting-themed décor. If you eat only fish, there’s always an option, sometimes two, on the menu; I had a delicious char. Service was attentive & fast, but not so efficient that they couldn’t take a moment to quip & laugh with guests. We were eating early, before going to a performance at BAM across the street; none of us was hungry enough for an appetizer, too. So we only had one order of brussel sprouts to share, since we couldn’t get none; they’re too good. Even a simple apple strudel has everything you expect to love, & adds enhancing flavors to the mix. An hour before the reservation, I got a phone call reminder from the restaurant, then 2 texts from Seatme, then the next day a Unilocal request to review. So understand that a reservation will become a correspondence course.

«Eat your Brussel Sprouts!» you dont have to ask me twice with how good they make them here. You will, however, find me ordering them twice cuz they were that good! I was already smitten by the beautiful exterior of this joint and then they hit you with great food, too(potato chips one can never fail with)? The nerve! I will say that service is good, but due to how busy it is, I can see them missing things. Waitress was friendly, but it’s a tad overwhelming for them due to the sheer volume. Anyway, count me back! I really enjoyed this place a lot!

Thus über-trendy bar in the midst of the BAM theaters is a nice place to grab a drink and some food before or after a show. We were meeting several friends to catch a drink before heading to a show at the BAM Harvey. The bar area is very small, with only about 8 seats at the bar and a few small tables. Food is not served at the bar, only potato chips, pretzels, and pickles. The pickles were a surprising delight. There were traditional cucumbers, but also green beans and cauliflower, which were really nice. The pretzel was also soft, warm, and buttery with a nice grain mustard. The prices were a bit high, you are paying trendy Manhattan prices, but in Brooklyn.

Hopefully an off day BUT: pathetic service(drinks ordered but never delivered; 2 of an entrée ordered but only one arrived) menu item supposedly with multiple items arrived with only one variety(charcuterie); tiny table for reservation for 5. Etc. Not at all what was expected let alone implied. Probably not worth the risk to try again.

Netter Laden ! Die Senfeier als Vorspeise waren genial, das Hauptgericht war gut, das Stiegl-Pils aus Salzburg(in tollen Flaschen !) war großartig, die Rechnungshöhe war okay und die Stimmung war angenehm. Viereinhalb Sterne. Wir kommen wieder !
