Angie’s is a Mexican bodega that doesn’t appear at first glance to even serve any hot foods. Buried among the single servings of gum, tobacco advertisements and lucky peso notes is a single sign noting that tacos, quesadillas and other standard street foods are available. This isn’t a neighborhood lacking in options, and Angie’s isn’t even open later than the competition. Seating options here are limited to two to three tables scattered in the back half of the store, one of which will probably be occupied by Angle’s relatives or children. They are cute, but I was less than thrilled than a recent trip was delayed by five minutes while the four-year-old instructed a toddler about how to take cilantro from the common chilling case to the kitchen across the store. There’s no way around it, Angie’s is grotty. There’s a level of crud here, built up from years without a thorough cleaning that is somewhat off-putting. Even those with strong stomachs might be a bit hesitant to dine in at the unwashed tables. The limited menu is cooked to order. I’ve found the meat to be somewhat overdone, especially the chewy cuts of beef in the tacos. This is somewhat rectify be the sour toppings, the half-lime to squeeze over the taco and pickled vegetables. A fresh salsa verde and several kinds of bottled hot sauces help balance out the meal. The generous-portions of salty cheeses on the quesadillas make them even more tempting option. I’d grab a quesadilla or two tacos to go and take them to The Graham or Duck Duck, two nearby bars that allow food and have much nicer interiors.

You will only find authentic quality from this family owned gem in East Williamsburg. No frills mexican food and imported sodas fill up this place that seems like it could be a roadstop somewhere south of the border. The TV is always playing Univision and the shopowners kids are really cute and provide entertainment when they run around sometimes even bringing your food to your table. There are only two tables but the service is friendly and one feels invited to sit. As far as eating authentic mexican food in bodegas this is definitely one of my favorite places to do it. I order the tacos for the normal price of $ 2.50 a piece and usually ask for whatever meat I see being prepared on the grill. The verde sauce is my stuff. The chicken tacos come with avocado on the top which is awesome. Sometimes they give you radishes, sometimes they dont. The Tortas are also really good, as well as the cactus. Order off the menu because to this day I havent seen one.
