The Spine Center of the New England Baptist Hospital has several locations, including at the central facility of the Hospital on 125 Parker Hill Ave, but I went to the location on Rte. 9 because it was closer to where I live. I haven’t gone back there for almost two years, but I think that’s a testament to how great their work is. I was having serious lower back and hip pain to the extent that I couldn’t lean over to wash my hands at a sink. Walking, sitting, sleeping was all incredibly painful and as I was dancing about 20 hrs a week at that point, «taking it easy» wasn’t an option. I finally got referred to see Dr. Cristin Jouve at the Spine Center to diagnose my pain; she is incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and highly professional. She immediately got me set up to have an MRI done; in the meantime, she paired me with one of the physical therapists on site to do some general pain mitigation. This is really the strong point of the office; the doctors and the PTs are in the same facility, so communication is fast and fluid. Kris, my PT, was friendly and really knew her stuff. The Center emphasizes active recovery, so it was important to commit to a serious PT schedule. Since I was only in town for 5 weeks, I was going in for three sessions a week. I had to go to the Parker Hill location to get my MRI done, but their hours were ridiculously flexible so it worked around my work schedule. The MRI results came back– two seriously herniated discs, thankfully not needing surgery but I was on a strong course of anti-inflammatories, with steroids as a possibility if the condition got worse. Dr. Jouve immediately passed on my results to Kris, who worked that information into our sessions. By the end of the month, I had reduced my pain level considerably and regained a lot more motion, as well as strength. Kris had drawn up a detailed series of stretches and exercises to take with me so I could keep up my régime. To this day it’s still keeping me moving.
