Andres Institute of Art

What a great family day out. You can bring your dog, ride your horse, or hike. 83 + beautiful sculptures by international artists on 140 actes of wooded hikeing trails and it is Free and open from dawn to dusk 365 days a year. It is a mountain so expect some of the trails to be steep. In September/​October you can watch the sculptors makeing new art for the mountain. Join in with others at the Iron Melt or other events. Great free place. Not too far from Providence, 2 hours. Some of the sculptures were more my taste than others. I don’t know much about sculpture and don’t always understand it but can appreciate it. We started with the trail marked difficult. If you can handle Purgatory Chasm in Sutton, this trail is not difficult. There was lots of climbing over boulders, however I found the steeper trails much more difficult. The park was a ski slope at one time. I like the fact that the sculptures are put in the park rather than building a park around the sculptures. We had trouble following the map and couldn’t find where some of the sculptures were. The Phenix at the summit is really neat. We were there about 4pm when the sun was starting to get low. There is a nice mid century modern fiberglassnbench that looks like it came from a bowling alley there. Perfect place to stop and rest. My favorite were the assemblage sculptures. There was one that looked like a person, like one of those plastic models that you would find in the Sears catalog that were transparent. The sculptures near the private residence at the top of the steep hill were missing their numbers, names and other identification. I would definitely go back. We missed alot of the sculptures even though we were there about 2 hours. I also liked that it wasn’t busy. We barely saw anyone else the whole time.

If you like sculpture and being in the outdoors, this place is worth a trip. It’s less than an hour from Boston but you feel in a remote, rural land. The Andre Institute is set on a hillside and contains acres of trails. Nestled along the trails are dozens of stone and metal contemporary sculptures. All the trails are in loops that connect to a main path to the summit. It’s very easy to meander aimlessly and enjoy what the next piece has to offer, but it’s not difficult to get lost. Terrain is easy to moderate and the paths are well-​marked, though faded signage in spots. Download the PDF map to your phone and you should be all set. We spent 2 hours trying to cover all the paths and see all the sculptures, but still missed a bunch. Worth a second trip. Best part is this place is free.

We came here with our dog to walk on the trails and the trails were great. There were some very easy and moderate trails. Some were rocky and others weren’t. It’s a trail for anyone to walk on. I loved this trail because on the way you stop and check out all of these cool art sculptures, I loved it, it was peaceful and pretty. Our dog loved it also, he ran around and loved to smell everything. I think he also enjoyed the art work. The trails were shaded and there was some open parts too and near the cell tower trail is a nice view. This trail would be great in the fall from that view. Nice trail for anyone to enjoy. They have maps in the lot and you can chose your trail type and time, we did most of them and it didn’t take us that long, maybe an hour and half. It was also very easy to find too.

I love this place. I brought my GS troop here. It was great. We had Fe as our tour guide. She went on and explained each sculpture. It was great the girls really seemed to enjoy themselves. I have lived here in Brookline for over 2 years and kept passing by saying, I gotta bring the kids there sometime. I am glad that I did!
There is some great sculptures and some great views! I am gonna have to go back for the whole tour, this one was just an hr and a half as we had asked for.

The Andres Institute is an amazing place, not something you would expect to find in the boonies of NH. Acres and acres of hilly trails, with lots of modern sculptures. If you start at the bottom and walk all the way up, it is a good hike. You can also drive up to the top, park at the studio, and just wander around. Be sure to pick up a map at the bottom of the drive, it will show you where all the sculptures are. This is a great place to take kids, they will love discovering the cool art hidden in the woods. I’ve taken lots of pictures here, it is really something different. The Institute also offers many programs, and it attracts artists from around the world.
