This is a very special place in haven’t seen any other beer distributor that has a large variety of Belgium beers which to me means a whole lot not to mention that the people who work in this establishment are all pleasant which makes going shopping for beer at this establishment a pleasant experience

Place has an awesome stock but since the new superstore opened on the Hutch just a bit away I’ve been going there for liquor cus the prices are better. Still the best spot for beers in the neighborhood.

This place ISVARIETY&SPECIALTYBEERS! One of the best things about this spot is that they sell growlers for the 5 selections of beers they have on tap. Great for a quick pick up & go. Six pack, cases, 22 oz specialty beers & your geneneric Bud/Coors/Corona, etc. IPA, Stout, Ales, Lagers. If your thursty, make a spot here. If beer isn’t your thing, next door Tommy sells wine & liquor.

Walking into most beer distributors is kind of like walking into your creepy neighbor’s dank, dark basement. You’re only there due to the lure of promised alcohol(because what creepy neighbor doesn’t want to give you alcohol?) and you don’t really look around, head straight for what you came for, and are in and out in 5 minutes flat, hoping that whatever your feet touched on the floor can’t transmit through your shoes to the rest of your body. Oh, your distributor wasn’t like that? Fancy for you then. Skibbos is a cut above the rest, and a lot has to do with the ownerOther than the growler, and Tommy, Skibbos is awesome because of the following: 1. Great beer selection. Incredibly vast. 2. Great staff. Tommy is knowledgeable about what he sells, and will get items that he doesn’t have upon request. The rest of the staff is friendly, and extremely helpful. 3. It’s clean. Clean and BRIGHT. 4. Prices are reasonable. 5. You can sample the beers on tap before purchasing. And there’s always new varieties. If these reasons aren’t enough to get you over to Skibbo’s, I don’t know what would be. You can head over to the gross, dank distributor and pick up your case of Natty Light I guess…

As far as da Bronx goes, this place is a welcome addition. I love the growler program and they usually have some cool stuff. The ONLY reason I don’t give it 5 stars is because some of the craft beer on the racks is either not rotated or simply does not move. The last time I looked, there was such a build up of dust on a sampler pack I wanted. Check the sell-by date before you purchase. Other than that, they’re very nice in there and I go very regularly in the warm weather.

Skibbo’s lives up to it’s reputation as an outlet owned by a guy full of charm who has an obvious desire to do well in the craft beer market and a better selection of craft beer than much of the Bronx, but there are problems and concerns. As one previous patron mentioned, the«best before» date on the beer seems to be ignored. Problem is… even I couldn’t find such a thing as a «best before» date on a couple of the beer I bought. So we can’t completely fault Sammy! I don’t pretend to be an expert of any kind, except that I can say that I have become, over 48 years, a pretty expert beer drinker. I am Canadian, and started drinking«Upper Canada Brewing Company» craft beers when most Canadians were swilling Bud and Labatt and Molson’s. Upper Canada brews were on the forefront of the craft beer market in Canada. At Skibbo’s, I purchased two bottles of Lagunita’s Hop Stoopid. I know this beer, and I like this beer very much. It is one of the IPA’s on the market that is reasonably priced, yet provides all the qualities you expect from a high-end IPA – it is well hopped, complex, and a joy to drink from start to finish, with a delicious grapefruit head. The Hop Stoopid I purchased from Skibbo’s was clearly past it’s «best before» date. It had lost all the high end«hop notes» common to this beer. It clearly hadn’t been sitting in the sun, but it just wasn’t the same fresh tasting IPA I had purchased before. I guess a“bad” Lagunita just gets«different», unlike a bad Heineken or Labatt, which tastes like the stuff you go to the can to relieve yourself of after your third beer. I had the same experience with the Arcadia Hop Mouth Double IPA. It was nothing like the beer my wife discovered at Jake’s Steak House in the Bronx. The difference was, again, pretty startling. The High Hop note was completely gone. I also purchased the Green Flash IPA, which I have thoroughly enjoyed previously – hops missing in THATIPA would have been a tragedy! Relief – it was fresh and delicious. Another pleasant surprise was the Flying Dog, Raging Bitch(I kid you not!) «Belgian Style IPA». They deserve an Oscar for imagination at least! Sounds like a gimmick, right? How many IPA’s have you purchased before which bear as much resemblance to an IPA as apples to oranges? Well, it’s not a gimmick. It is an interesting take on an IPA– lots of hops, but with that«Belgian» taste as an undertone. As I said, I am not an expert — is it the malts, or the hops, which give it that particular Belgian«spiced-wine» taste? When all is said and done, Sammy is trying to introduce good beer to the Bronx. But he needs to watch the dates on the beer. Also, the Dogfish Head 60 Minute and 90 Minute are approximately three dollars cheaper at Flair Beverage, which is closer to my home.(And for all those willing to make the drive to Rehoboth Beach in Delaware, you can pick up a four pack of 90 Minute for eight bucks. I highly recommend the place – great food, good service, and… the«Immort Ale»? Out of this world good! I am not the first to say that DFH has really redefined brewing in the USA.) But back to Sammy and Skibbo’s– his selection is superior to Flair Beverage, but he just needs to get all his ducks in a row. If he does, every true beer drinker in the Bronx will be storming the place, and marveling at how much better his selection is, and, let’s hope, how much cheaper than anywhere else. And, hey, on top of that you don’t get any«New York» attitude!!! ! That in itself is worth the trip.

All beer distributors were not created equal. I used to think they were all the same, just like wine stores, but this is a fallacy. I walk into the open area and have cases of beer, soda and ice to choose from. I can pick up a a six pack, keg, pay and drive away. There is no ambiance. The pallets of stacked beer and concrete floors give me the sterile feeling which is similar to a hospital. Wait, there is a dedicated rack of craft beer. Southern Tier? Ommegang? Dogfish Head? Brooklyn? St Bernardus? Stone? There are plenty of nice brews to try. Of course, the mass produced products from Anheuser-Busch Inbev, MillerCoors and Heinken are available too. Romantic setting? No. Clean? Yes. Polite and courteous staff? Yes. Craft beer selection that caters to beer geeks, snobs, wimps and women? Yes. Tommy, the owner has been in the beer distribution business for over 20 years and has introduced craft beers for the last five. The first time I entered the store, he immediately greeted me, asked me how I discovered this business and offered samples. He lured me to small area with a bunch of taps and gave me a taste of the beers. I’ve tried half of them before, but I couldn’t turn down sweet nectar. Tommy works hard to make every customer leave happy with a good product. I appreciate that. The Bronx is often shunned in the pecking order of the five boroughs. For beer lovers, this place is great and it is difficult to leave here empty handed. Excuse me, while I fill up my growler. IFHTP3+
