Riverdale Johnson Barber Shop

One of the best haircuts that I’ve ever gotten and the least amount of money I’ve paid for haircut. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. As long as I live in Riverdale I can’t imagine going anywhere else.

Just moved back to Riverdale and after reading some positive reviews and decided to give Riverdale Johnson Barbershop a shot. I was not disappointed! I hadn’t had a haircut in about 4 months so I really needed some styling. Vinny gave me one of the best haircuts I’ve had in many years. Classic old school barber shop who can now add me as a new regular customer. My Dad used to go here in the 80s and they had a pet squirrel that the previous owner would feed peanuts to thru the mail slot.

One of the best haircuts that I’ve ever had! I’m visiting from California and was needing ‘a haircut’. Not looking for or expecting anything special, I wandered into the Riverdale Barber Shop. I took note when my barber clipped on what could be described as a holster filled with different scissors, brushes, etc. I told him how I wanted the cut, and he went to work. Combed it out… one type of clipper… another type of clipper… one type of scissor… another type of scissor… brush and blow-​dry to get rid of the clipped hairs… shave the neck, and done.
He far exceeded my expectations. The next time I’m back in Riverdale I will make sure to go back!
I also liked the classic barber shop environment and conversations!

Classic barbershop feel. Very simple store with three chairs. Vinny is friendly and knows all his customers by name and their «regular». Never go anywhere else for a haircut if you can avoid it, this place is the best. The line can get a bit long sometimes, but it is well worth the wait.

I’m happy with the haircut but the barber was rude to me. There was no wifi and it was warm in there. I’m not coming back again.

This barber shop is a Riverdale classic. I have been a patron for nearly 35 years and feel a sense of nostalgia every time I walk in. It is located in the heart of South Riverdale and brings a sense of the «way things were» to the neighborhood. As new franchises, such as Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts, swallow up the neighborhood, the Johnson Avenue Barber Shop is a nice escape. It’s classic feel will make you feel at home, while its clientele will also keep you entertained during your wait.
The owner, Vinny, was hired in mid-​to-​late 90’s by then owner, Tony. Vinny has since engrained himself in the neighborhood while climbing the ladder and taking over ownership of the shop. Vinny is very engaging and can always be found at the shop ready to talk sports (Yankees, Knicks, Rangers) while giving an A+ haircut or shave. His ties to the neighborhood have grown deeper and deeper throughout the years and it is reflected through the shops customers. The clientele of the shop is as loyal as loyal can be and the «regulars» certainly add to the atmosphere. Many of my family and friends grew up getting their hair cut at the shop and now bring their children in.
Please do yourself a favor and stop in the next time you are looking for a top notch haircut. It is a fantastic throwback and you will thank yourself for the experience.

In and out. No waiting. No long pauses to have hour long conversations with other patrons or barbers. When I got there I was already late for an engagement. And seeing the two gentleman already seated with
another waiting, I thought the situation bleak. But these guys manage to be friendly and get their craft done in a timely fashion. My own haircut was quick: badly. Not complicated. But you have to be thorough, no patches missed.
So why 4 stars rather than five? I actually like the conversation. Gives the place a community feel.

For those seeking an excellent haircut in an unpretentious, welcoming environment, this is the place! The owner, Vinny is the key ingredient to this shop’s success.

Very nice and extremely affordable haircut ($ 13 for a standard mens’ cut at this time). They know how to deal with the requirements of Jewish law as well! Will definitely return…

The wait time was fairly short and the haircut was nothing less than perfect. definitely recommend anyone who’s tired of waiting long lines for haircuts they don’t want. This is the place to go !

This place is hands down the best barber in Riverdale. Vinny knows how to run an efficient shop that delivers quality cuts every time. I have been a loyal client for over 20 years. His patience with every type of client, young and old, is what makes him an asset to the neighborhood. We need more shop keepers like Vinny in Riverdale!

Best haircut I’ve gotten. I became a regular customer as a college student three years ago and exclusively have Vinny cut my hair now.

I have been going here the mid 90’s. Along the way, I have tried places from L.A. to Manhattan to Queens to Cape Cod, but I always come back here. Always pleasant, social, and they do what you want. Best part, they remember you, which is important.

3 words. Best haircut ever! I waited for about 20 minutes, which is pretty reasonable. I got a haircut from Vinny. Vinny listened to what i wanted and i left with exactly what i wanted. He was also very friendly and social. Great experience overall, strongly recommended

I walked in, sat down, told the man how I wanted my hair cut, and he did exactly what he wanted, instead. Worst. Haircut. Ever. I’m now in search of a place to help me remediate this chop job.
