Not bad at all. All the Chinese places in Maine that I’ve eaten at seem to live by the rule, «stuff the customer’s gut until(s)he explodes, and all will be well.» This place is no exception — my wife and I are older, so what they brought us will probably do for three meals. We don’t drink tea, but there’s a big pot of free tea there for the diners. Their«ruby rice» — house fried rice — is not bad at all, came with an abundance of pork, shrimp, and other things; I liked it because it wasn’t overly greasy like some others I’ve had. I had the szechuan pork lo mein, and it was hot and tasty but not as spicy as I would have liked. In fact, I wondered if they forgot to do the szechuan option, but it was good just the same. My wife had egg drop soup which was a little thicker than I’m used to but otherwise nice and hearty, and some sort of pork thing that I can’t pronounce, but it was quite nice. I’ll go back again, but probably not in the winter — the place was quite chilly.

It’s unfortunate there are so many poor reviews because Ruby Food is one of my favorites. Are there better Chinese food restaurants out there? Sure, but if you’re expecting this place to be a gourmet 5 star restaurant then you’ve obviously set yourself up with unrealistic expectations. They absolutely kill it with their garlic sauce. I literally go looking for vegetables/chicken in a garlic sauce that is as good as theirs and there is just no comparison. My family and I have been going here for 15+ years. I usually get a combination platter that has the veggies in garlic sauce, rice and chicken wings. We have never had a bad experience and always try to stop in when we head up North. While they don’t have a liquor license, the Blackhorse Tavern up the street does and there’s alcohol sold at the liquor stores and gas stations so that really shouldn’t be a deal breaker. Get some take out and a 6 pack and enjoy your time up there!

Ordered and received two inedible dishes. Both seemed to be doused with vinegar. I was sure that we were pranked because it was a take out order and if we hadn’t been staying so far from the restaurant, we would have asked for new food or our money back. It was the worst food and had to be thrown out after one bite of each dish. Now I understand why NO one was in the restaurant and they had no other orders being prepared when we were there. YUCK!

I’m very impressed with this place. The sesame chicken, the ribs, the egg rolls, the lo mein have all been exceptional, as with everything else we’ve tried there. The portions are very generous(plan on getting a box to take some with you). On top of that, the staff has always been very polite and attentive(a HUGE plus for me). it;‘s got a charm all its own and we’ll keep going back. Nicely done guys!

Ruby Food is a Chinese place in north west Maine. That said, expectations are not that high to begin with. It’s good for what it is. Chinese food for a quick dinner when on vaca. It’s not the best I have ever had. it’s OK and it serves it’s purpose. I would say if you have a hankering for Chinese after a long day of boozin’ on the lake(a designated driver is needed of course for pick up) then have at it and enjoy.

Knowing it would be busy on NewYears’ Eve we placed our takeout order at 4:30 and we are still waiting! The food was cold when we finally got it and it sucked

This is hands down the worst Chinese food I have ever had! The so called seafood Rangoon was the most tasteless excuse for a Rangoon in the history of anything deep fried which I thought was pretty hard to mess up, however they failed with flying colors. We ordered hot and sour soup at 4 something a bowl when it came out it was a mix of egg drop soup and vomit I very nicely brought it up to the counter to ask if this was in fact hot and sour soup and to say I couldn’t even get a spoonful down the hatch, the response I got was well that’s how we make it here and then the chef and I use that term very loosely disappeared back into the abyss of the sorriest kitchen I have ever been a victim to! So in closing unless you like tasteless vomit inducing garbage I highly recommend avoiding this dump like the plague!

Pretty good Chinese food. We were walking through town and noticed the rather yummy aroma of Chinese food so decided to stop for lunch. Nothing fancy inside but clean and simple with lots of little booths. No liquor license. I got a combination plate of vegetable lo mein and chicken fingers(4) and Mr H gor Szechwan shrimp and pork fried rice. Spring rolls to share. The vegetable lo mein tasted very fresh, lovely crisp beansprouts and a tasty hint of pepper. The chicken fingers were huge. Tender white meat chicken. The batter was a little thick but that’s just my preference. The shrimp dish was awesome. Spring rolls very tasty. We would definitely go back. It’s more of a stop in and grab quick lunch or early dinner or great for takeout vs romantic date :) They close a little earlier in winter so worth checking before you go. Opposite the Magic Lantern cinema pub(awesome!) and plenty of street parking.
