This place doesn’t seem to get great reviews… which is surprising since it is one of very few places to eat on the way back between Austin/Waco and Houston. They had just what we needed. A huge variety of food for the right price. I wasn’t expecting that this was going to be a Vegas-Style buffet, so maybe that helped. The biscuits and gravy were delicious, and the breaded catfish was nice. I can’t say that they were the best I have ever had, but that’s because Breakfast Klub in Houston set the bar way too high for anyone to ever compete with. The service was friendly, and we had an all-around great dinner on the way back to town. Again, not haute cuisine, but good enough to warrant a return trip next time I go that way.

On the way from Austin to Houston, there are only so many food choices you can make. And smack in the heart of Brenham lies a little family-owned buffet that feels like your grandmother’s given you a big hug. Purcell’s is one of those places like Cheer’s, where it’s very obvious that you aren’t from around here but everyone is too kind to mention it out loud. It’s right off the highway across from Wal-Mart and not too difficult to find from the 290 turn to Houston. Now, if you’re coming here expecting a giant buffet or an amazing selection of items, you’ll leave sad. But if you please, you can snag almost any fried meat possible as well as some seriously tex-mex-ified burritos. Their mac and cheese is so soft it’s almost criminal, and addictive. They have soup(not soups) and bacon in many sides and it’s a vegetarian’s nightmare, but you bet your bippy you won’t leave hungry. The desserts are packaged and unmemorable, and I would stick with tea and not touch the coffee(granted, I had coffee at night.) Your standard buffet price gets you all food, drink, and cutlery you could want. The person who runs the front register also keeps the buffet up to par and often runs around refilling glasses and talking to guests. There’s no tipping required, but we’ve seen servers do much less for better pay in Austin so we left a tip anyway. We’d go back because it’s so comforting and loving, even if you’re not quite in the in-crowd as a regular.

The guy that runs this place is always super nice! The restaurant is clean, but bathrooms need an update and some work. The food is a large variety that would appeal to many different tastes, however, it will appeal to you more if you don’t like alot of flavor in your food. A little on the bland side. They do have a large following w/the older crowd. They need more handicapped parking, especially since they do attract older customers.
