Is this how supermarkets are in the city? I don’t live in or near the city. I don’t work in the city. I don’t visit the city often, either. Actually, normally, for any needs, I go places the OPPOSITE of the city. Stores that are farther and farther away from the city are always larger and have more. Today, I ended up traveling to the city to revisit one of my new favorite stores, CityTarget(one of the only reasons to ever make it in to this busy, congested area). Following my visit there, I stopped at this store to do some quick grocery shopping. During a visit to Fenway Park a few years ago, I also came here. This store used to be a Shaw’s, and wasn’t NEARLY as clean or organized as it is now, and used to be quite dirty. Now, it’s a Star Market. The store has been recently renovated to a Star Market, with a full interior makeover, and includes a Starbucks. It’s not like suburban stores, like my wonderful Stop&Shop with 25WIDE aisles, unlike the 10 thin aisles here, but still works for the grocery essentials and is not a terrible store(thank god they renovated it), and is in a VERY convenient location. Staff at the customer service desk were all very friendly and there were lots of cashiers, all being very friendly and helpful. Because they didn’t have everything in stock everything I was looking for, the parking lot, and the lack of my preferred store, –1 star. Otherwise, you can’t expect much more in a city store. Supreme convenience to Fenway Park. 4 stars.

One of those asshole companies that don’t accept out of state licenses or even MASSSTATE IDs. WTF, am I a second-class citizen because I don’t have a damn driver’s license? Some of the cashiers are alright and let it pass, but others are assholes about it.

Before I review this location, I want to say something about Michelle K’s review below: anyone who doesn’t like a business because there are people from Saudi Arabia in the store really needs to look at their themselves and ask«why do I hate so much?». Of course, haters tend to blame everyone else, and for some odd reason, Unilocal said her review was OK when I flagged it(and she has two for this location). Anyhow… Two great things about this location: Unbelievably nice girl at the bakery named Asiah(sp?) who makes you think you have just walked into a 5-star bakery instead of perusing muffins on sale. If I had more time, I would have chatted with her all night. Other great thing? Ben & Jerry’s Cinnamon Buns, a flavor I had not seen in at least 4 years, and that is probably a good thing as I would eat so many pints I would need cinnamon just to make my own buns look OK, but that is another story.

This store is great, the renovation came out fabulous and there is even an outdoor patio. The employees are superb, but I think Shaw’s and Star Market have always had the best customer service of any supermarket. The prices are reasonable as well, which is really saying something because this store is right in the middle of the city. They have everything I need all under one roof including beer and wine, which is pretty great since most supermarkets cannot sell beer and wine due to some archaic law in Massachusetts.

If you go shopping here, be careful and inspect EVERYTHING. They do not take good care of their merchandise at all. I have accidentally come home with broken items(most recent example: deodorant with a broken dial) on several occasions, and there was one time where I had to go through 6 cartons of eggs before I found a dozen that wasn’t shattered.

It looks lovely after its recent renovations and also they always have a bunch of cashiers working so you don’t have to wait in a long line or use self checkout. My only complaint about this store is the horrible smelling dumpster outside.

I live right by this thing so I go for some basics but this is the worst Star Market and grocery store in general. It is expensive. It has no seafood counter but wraps fish fillets in little plastic trays. The sale items are always sold out during the after work hour and they do not restalk it although its a ‘24hour’ store… deceptive practices! At least they covered up the stinky garbage dump… it used to be the worst smell in the Fenway.
