Sadly, all of our love for local business cannot compete with cheap grocery stores popping up everywhere. Dipaolo and Rossi is closing. :(

Got a boneless prime rib here for Thanksgiving. Fantastic. I also buy chicken cutlets pounded thin for chicken scallopiini at home. Everything here is cut to order. No prepackaged stuff. A real old fashioned butcher shop.

I love visiting John and his partner. I live next door to wholefoods and just can’t bare to pay that much for all my meat. So one day on my way back from Neptune Oyster, I noticed this unassuming little butcher shop. They have been there for I believe 38 years. Their prices are fantastic! I get my chicken, pork, and beef there every Saturday before I go to the market. They will prep your chicken breast any way you like which is part of why I love going there. I get home and pop them in zip locks and freeze for the week, which makes weeknight dinners a breeze. The other reason I love them is because they make the best South African boerewors you can find in the US! They have the recipe, and recently made about 60 lbs of boerewors for 10 different South African families in Boston. The butcher makes fresh italian sausage every day and his skills showed. He used the coarse setting on his grinder and even made it in coil and the proper thickness like real boerewors. If you are a South African in Boston he is your man!

I’ve had their ribeye and porkchop. Both very good at a great price. They usually don’t have much on display so I’d be curious to see what else they would have.

Three words: SUPPORTLOCALBUSINESS! John & Peter are the nicest guys in the neighborhood you’ll meet. I am glad that the North End doesn’t readily have this big commercial business /one-stop-shopping mentality, thereby forcing you to appreciate the art of going to old-world style speciality shops. Don’t be intimidated by the fact that they do not openly display their meats in a cheesy styrofoam container wrapped in plastic wrap. This place is great and I highly recommend getting their handmade sausages, a hit at every summer barbeque I bring these to. They also help me prepare bulk orders in advance and always go out of their way for their customers.

Thank you fellow Unilocalers! New to downtown(a Somerville, then Winthrop, import) I was dying to find a place to get meat as good as the restaurants. Based on previous reviews, I made my way over to Salem Street — grabbed some ravioli and sauce from DePasquale’s around the corner, and followed up with a dash across the street to Lulu’s for some post-veal and ravioli eating gluteny! I got some veal cutlets — cut right in front of me, wrapped in waxed paper, and sent me on my way. I literally rolled the veal up with prosciotto and provolone, brushed with a bit of olive oil and popped them in the oven. Amazing quality veal. We’ll be back for sure to try the other offerrings, starting with the sausuage :)

I have lived in the North End for three years and I’ll be here for another three if I get my way. These guys are awesome; everything is cut to order, the meat is ground to order, and the prices keep me coming back. While they don’t always have every cut of meat, they have a lot. They make a fantastic meatball mix(hint, not all beef), great hot sausages(handmade), great ground turkey(it’s more of a coarsely chopped turkey), great ground beef, and of course, rabbit. The only bummer is that they close at 6pm and are closed on Sundays; aka football meat night.

Updating my first review to add that their hot Italian sausage may possibly be the best I’ve had. It if extremely flavorful and not at all greasy, which is exactly what I needed for a very simple pasta recipe using very few ingredients — pasta, sausage, pumpkin, and saffron were featured in this dish, but the sausage was definitely the star of the stage. Thanks, D&R!

Hi, my name is Emily and I’m a recovering vegetarian. For several years, my food did not at any point moo, oink or cluck. I thought I was satisfied… and then one day at a restaurant, I ordered a chicken caesar salad and never looked back. Though my tofu-only days are long behind me, when I walk into a place like DiPaolo and Rossi, I can’t help but thank my impulse that led me back to the bone-gnawing omnivore lifestyle I had been missing out on. D&R is a throwback to the days when a person had to hit three or four stores to complete their shopping list. The storefront is completely unassuming — blink and you’ll miss it type of thing — while the inside is equally basic. My friends, do not judge a butcher by its lack of display case. Though not laid out in front of you, D&R offers an extensive selection of meats so I would be astonished if they did not have what you wanted on hand. Chicken cutlets, homemade sausages, pork loin, it’s all there. I waltzed in one afternoon to see if could place an order for short ribs for pick up the next day. No need — within minutes my ribs were beautifully trimmed of fat(with the scariest looking knife I’ve ever seen) and cut to small portions with the band saw in the corner. My favorite part about coming here is the cash register. It’s the oldest looking thing I’ve ever seen, and apparently doesn’t know how to charge 21st century prices. For half the price and the same, if not better quality as Whole Foods, DiPaolo and Rossi ensures I won’t fall off the meat wagon anytime soon.
