GROSS and UNSAFE!!! I walked in to buy some vegetables. The Chinese man behind the vegetable counter was ‘cleaning’ and bagging green beans. he SNEEZEDDIRECTLYINTOHISHANDS(with rubber gloves on) and went right back to bagging vegetables without a second thought. DIDNOTCHANGEHISGLOVES… DIDNOTEVENTHINKABOUTIT. The woman he was working with said and did nothing meaning it is a ‘normal’ occurrence there. I will never go back. This was the WORST shopping experience at a supermarket, actually allow me to correct that: the WORST shopping experience EVER. When the supermarket first started I was excited to have another player(other than super 88, c-mart, and the near defunct ming’s market). When I first went there the food was decent, not the greatest selection but it was definitely decent. Then after the first few weeks it went downhill as people realized that the food was nothing that special and the other bigger supermarkets were cheaper. Now, normally I love supporting small stores, but this is an exception. As soon as business started going down so did their quality(important to note that the prices were the only thing that did not go down). A WARNING to all that may go here, they like to do a process to make their veggies and fruit(especially their veggies) look healthier and fuller than they actually are, what they do is they soak them in water such that the plant absorbs the water and thus looks nicer for an extended period of time. For example: if one bought a napa from a credible supermarket and compared a similar or even smaller sized napa to the one from a credible supermarket, one would find a substantial weight difference caused by the water drowning/soaking technique. Now, the bad thing about this technique is that it takes away the flavour of the veggie and worst of all, it makes the veggie look nice on display but, if left out for over two days(even in the fridge) it will turn bad, really bad. Since the water soaking kept the plant from showing its true health. Now that I have told you about their food, we must talk about their employees. Firstly, as a Chinese, I would like to say that I understand not every person in Chinatown knows English. One day, as a last resort, I went there to get some fruits and possibly napa. Then, as I was browsing their fruit section, I got a chuckle out of kiwis that were labeled various things including: String Beans, Plums, and Pluot(they meant plumcots). I got a chuckle and when I was taking a picture just for fun, the cashier threw a fit. She demanded«what are you doing?!» I just responded humorously, hoping that she would think it was funny also since she clearly knew english, that the fruit and vegetables were mislabeled. She then just became very defensive, far more that I thought possible, she said that she was the only one that knew english and that I should not make fun of the other employee’s english. I responded that I was sorry if I offended her, but I just thought it was funny how things were labeled and offending her or the establishment was not intended. I hoped that would diffuse the situation, but for some reason, an apology catalyzed her anger. At that moment I could not stand it any more, I would spend extra time in Chinatown to go to a better supermarket and get a better price for better food that has better staff. AVOIDTHISPLACELIKETHEPLAGUE! –not worth the price –poor quality of food and staff –small selection
