I have been going to Christopher for over 25 years, and I have never once gotten a bad haircut. He is amazing — definitely one of the best hair dressers on the planet. He truly listens to what you say and then makes your hair look beautiful. The salon itself is funky and welcoming, an unpretentious but charming oasis on Newbury Street. Very highly recommended. You won’t go wrong.

Wow, do they do an excellent job. My hairdresser was a little strange and even made fun of me a bit, but I warmed up to her eventually. I got a full foil highlight and cut. the entire process took 3 hours but it was worth it. Great, great job. Atmosphere is weird, yes, but the end product was worth it.

I started seeing Christopher in October and knew immediately that I would never go anywhere else. He’s a true artist who happens to love people and hair and is an expert colorist. I’ve seen him several times since my first magical hairstyling and for the first time in my life people stop me and ask who does my hair. Really. Strangers. His staff is friendly and attentive, the vibe of the salon is creative, pleasant and warm. They are genuinely interested in helping you to enjoy your time there. But, of course, the best news is that you’ll walk out with a smashing look and some instruction on how to get it looking that way yourself. Christopher isn’t interested in selling you a bunch of products or a way of life and he doesn’t need your loyalty… but you’ll want to give it to him.

I would NOT recommend this place, purely because of the attitude. I called in yesterday because I had JUST left the doctors office with a prescription for my contagious strep throat. I thought I would be kind enough to give the salon an opportunity to have me reschedule my appointment due to the fact that I did not want to get anyone else sick. Let me preface this with the fact that I bought a buywithme to this salon. I called and as I was explaining my peculiar situation the woman who answered the phone told me that her BOSS was standing behind her and said that my ticket would not be honored if I did not come that day(since there is a 24hr cancellation policy). I politely said I was trying to not spread my sickness, but if he didn’t care if his employees got sick then neither did I. After getting off the phone and thinking about this, I decided it was obscene and ridiculous that someone would be so asinine. I decided I did not want to give this establishment one more penny of mine(since I would have had to tip). I forfeited my haircut that was already paid for because I think the owner of this establishment is not really any type of stand up person that I would want to give my money to.

I tried out this place with hope and an open mind and came out pensive. The place was unassuming in décor but nice, neat and clean looking. So unassuming that I couldn’t find a sign on the door and had to glance inside to see if it looked like a possible hair salon. The staff was very welcoming and took me right away. I did like the low key atmosphere during my hair cut. I enjoyed the large mirror in the corner and the nice view of Newbury St. without the usual high end don’t-touch-anything atmosphere. She did a beautiful job cutting my hair, which is fine and thin. It was a great wash and go cut, with bounce and body. Perfect! Unfortunately there was a problem with the highlights, or else I would’ve given 4 or 5 stars. I dye my hair myself and would’ve had to pay $ 30 more for highlights with color, otherwise it would’ve been just the bleach. I was told that it costs more to lift the color off for highlights and then add a highlight color – even though this is what I’ve always had before and with the Groupon/buy with me discount. They were very nice about my wish to think about it, but I decided that I could do a bleach only highlight at home or go to my regular person for highlights if I had to pay more – it would’ve been about the same. I just didn’t understand why it wasn’t possible to do the bleach and color highlight at the same time. I wasn’t sure if this was because I had a buy with me coupon and my suspicions weren’t pleasant. Therefore the mixed feelings and review. But, I do recommend them for a nice cut with a relaxed atmosphere.

I have been looking a for a great hair dresser for a while now. I found a coupon through and saw good reviews about the salon. I was excited to get my hair cut and settle in with a stylist. I have very thick hair and it takes quite a while to cut and dry. I thought my stylist was great spending so much time with me UNTIL I got home and realized that the left side of my head was an inch longer then the right side. The salon was able to fit me in the next day but the stylist had a very difficult time trying to fix it. I went to talk to the owner about my disappointing experience, he told me there was«no charge.» Why would I be charged for your mistake? I would NEVER recommend the services at Christopher J Hawes and can’t believe how AWFUL I was treated. Christopher was extremely unprofessional and I am surprised he can run a business with the way he treated me.

I recently moved here and was anxious about finding a stylist who would ‘get’ me and my hair. A friend recommended I try Christopher and I’m so glad I did. I can totally trust him. He styles my hair in a way that really suits me and that is easy to maintain afterwards. And — I’ve put of coloring my hair for years despite getting greyer and greyer — but now I’ve found Christopher. He does this really subtle highlighting which works so well and doesn’t leave me with that horrible line once it after a few weeks. I love the vibe in the salon as well. I’m so happy to have found them.

Although the cut and styling was pretty cool — the attitude was unkind. My hair stylist went as far as saying«…it is supposed to pull»! Since when is haircut supposed to be painful… its not a facial you know.

I’ve been looking for a go-to stylist without much success. I have very thick, wavy hair which everyone positively comments on and then proceeds to f-up royally. AnaMary is the first person I’ve gone to in 2 years that I actually will go back to. She was super sweet and made sure to understand exactly what I wanted — then told me I couldn’t have it. Turns out my last hair cut messed up my hair so badly she had to take 2 inches off to even it out(I had requested less because I’m growing my hair out but then she explained I could grow it out or even it out, but not both, and it was my choice). Overall the place is really cute, cozy, and a tad funky. I didn’t love the way Christopher talked to his employees when I was in there — it seemed kind of inappropriate in front of customers(like an elderly grandfather barking orders at his grandkids to bring him the newspaper but replace newspaper with answering phones, stacking conditioner bottles, & waiting on super-late customers — even though I was sitting there with soaking wet hair) but that won’t stop me from going back to see AnaMary — my hair is perfect!

So I have been wanted to «cheat» on my hair stylist for the longest time and once I saw the«Buy With Me» groupon I decided the time was right! $ 25 gets you a cut and blow dry figuring maybe I could find a new stylist at an inexpensive rate the first time around. When I called to book the appointment I told the receptionist that I had a groupon and if I could book with anyone. She said«yes». So I asked«How about Christopher?» She said«yes, that’s fine». I showed up and once Christopher found out I had a groupon he said«Oh I don’t do those» and«you should have known it was written on the groupon my assistants only do those». I responded«your receptionist said ‘anyone’ when I booked the appointment». I waited 20 min while he figured out if someone else could take me. He brought me to the sink and left a leave in conditioner in my hair. I sat another 20 min in the sink, wet, and fell asleep! He came back and brought me to his chair where he continued to tell me on 3 other occasions«You know I don’t do these». I sat there and got a silent hair cut– feeling like I had done something wrong. He did a fine job cutting. He put a pump full of styling cream in my hair and said«your all set you won’t have to pay extra for this». Mind you, I have curly hair that needs styling and gel! I ran my hands through me hair to only pull out all the excess hair he had trimmed off into my hair. All the other girls who had groupons were walking out with their hair DRY, STYLED, and they actually looked decent to walk out of his salon. My hair looked so bad I pulled it back in embarrassment. «Don’t worry you won’t have to pay extra for this», really?! I’m sure Christopher is a fine stylist but clearly he doesn’t know how to treat all clients. I don’t care if you have a groupon or not. You are there to do business and try to impress your clients. If clients with groupons aren’t what you want in your salon than don’t advertise with them. If your staff booked incorrectly speak to your staff about it not your client.

I am so pleased to be writing a review for Christopher J Hawes! I learned about them through BuyWithMe and am THRILLED to have gotten my best haircut — ever! I brought in a photo of the kind of haircut I wanted and Anamary cut it beautifully — looks even better than the photo! Anamary is super nice, easy going and you can tell, just a good person through and through. The salon itself is funky, artful and intimate. Not at all pretentious in the way that many salons can be. I have been going to another Newbury Street salon for several years, but I gots to say, this is going to be my new salon!

I am in the process of looking for a great stylist/place to stick with for my monthly haircut. This place is small, nice, and convenient if you are in the boston area. The price for a haircut is rather decent, especially given the location on newbury street. The stylists all seem to be very friendly and treat you rather nicely. Décor is definitely different with many bright colors. Great promotions with 25% off for students. A.M. cut my hair and she is good at trying to keep you company while giving you a haircut that you want. Overall, it is a friendly place with good service. Price is decent and I will consider returning and even recommending friends to this place.

Christopher always creates a masterpiece with my hair, from color to cut I always look 200 times better walking out of his salon. Its been at least four years that he has been working on my hair, it was easy to get hooked, he has a great technique that leaves your hair looking great even when it is growing out! Thanks Christopher!

My hair hasn’t looked so pretty in ages. And it’s a cool artsy little place, too. In a funky kind of way, none of that pretentious Newbury Street stuff(despite its locale).

I’ve been Christopher’s client for about 5 years now. Christopher is AMAZING. He is consistently excellent — all the time, every time. It’s very hard to find people who are that with color. You know what they say about getting what you paid for. It will cost you to get your hair done there, but it’ll worth every penny. You will be treated well, get great hair, listen to a unique CD, and have an opportunity to admire some interesting art(Christopher always exhibits art collections). The best part of the whole experience is not only the end result but also the individual attention. I remember being to other places where I was one of 3 people being worked on at the same time. Not here. Christopher will be with you all the way, he will pay great attention to detail. He will not miss anything. Everyone that works at the salon is very talented and intelligent, so you will definitely enjoy the experience. The only thing to consider is that parking is difficult. Take the train if you can or budget extra time so you can drive around for a few minutes. You can also park in the garage nearby, but that’s expensive. You will need your check book or cash(no CC) to pay for your new beautiful hair.

Go and see Jeffrey — he is great at cutting both short and long hair. He’s very good with Asian hair too.
