My friend and I had high hopes for Bakey’s. The well-dressed Financial District folks at the tables, the beautiful dark-wood décor, and the white linen table clothes made us think we had found a lovely spot for a slightly fancy lunch. The lunch menu consisted mostly of sandwiches(they even had PB&J). It was after sitting and looking at the menu for a minute that we turned and realized the incongruous picture before us: power suits and beautiful décor and well-heeled folk… dining on mezzo-mezzo deli fare. Everything was pricey, even for the Financial District. Between the two of us, we got a ham sandwich, a Reuben, and a side of baked beans – all of which came out to nearly $ 30 before tip. There appeared to be only one waitress; she was okay but obviously frantic. Our sandwiches appeared about 45 minutes after we sat down. They contained a fairly good amount of meat, but that was where the good parts ended. My Reuben had obviously been off the grill for a while – the bread was soggy and disintegrating, and the whole thing had gone cold. There was a little marker on the table saying that the restaurant baked homemade chocolate chip cookies, and that they could be had in mass quantities for big events. I asked if I could buy a cookie or two. And no, I could not – because they were available ONLY in mass quantities for big events. What a letdown. UPDATE: Downgraded to one pathetic star. I checked my bank statement the next day to make sure a transaction had gone through. And there on my screen, it says that Bakey’s sent through two friggin’ transactions on my card – the cost of my lunch and the cost of my friend’s lunch – never mind that my friend paid for his lunch in cash. I went to Bakey’s today around noon, and ran into Helen. I don’t know if she’s the proprietor or just the hostess, but she handed me off to the waitress who served us, who handed me off to another waitress who looked at me as if she wouldn’t piss on me if I were on fire. That waitress handed me back off to Helen, who said, would I mind coming back on Monday? And could I give them my phone number. Come on. The financial screw-up is on your end… and you want me to come back Monday morning when I’ll be working because you just don’t have time to fix your mistakes today? What the hell is wrong with this picture? I explained that I felt they should either look into this issue now or just give me my money back. Finally, after looking at the transaction record I had(which, after a glance at the menu, didn’t exactly add up to the cost plus tax for either of our lunches), Helen went and got me some cash. And then a few hours later, she called to say that her records indicated that the double billing never went through. My statements say otherwise. If something magically changes, and I see a credit on my account, I’ll walk over myself and give them the money on Monday. But geez, what a way to handle a screw-up. Short of returning money on Monday morning, I am never going back. …And I stand corrected. My statement resolved to show the proper amount. I’ll be giving them back their $ 14 tomorrow. The review is staying one-star for craptacular service.

3.5 stars. Pretty good quality sandwiches, and the inside layout has that oldies charm. But, it’s still overpriced in my opinion since the portions are average and service is mediocre at best.

Lunch today, have not been in here for a while, pretty much as we remembered… very good cocktail, even served with a carafe on ice for the remainder which you don’t see too much anymore, i had sandwich 1 which was excellent, wife had the tuna melt which was very good… food has always been good here so we were glad to get back in here… only complaint was that the sandwiches came out not too long after our drinks, it didn’t really matter, they weren’t going to get cold but seemed a little rushed and the waitress could have used a little more personality… like the place.

Bakeys is a power lunch place. I may not be powerful, but do enjoy a good sandwich First, Bakeys is in the heart of the Financial District in Boston. It has a bar with tables and another room of booth/tables. It is homey and has really good, fast service The place is serious about sandwiches, and you can choose between about 25 – 30 of different varieties… Then choose betwen 5 types of bread, then beans, slaw or tater salad So in short, Beef Wellington: No, Lobsters Thermador: No… bunch of sandwiches… definitely

I always have a great lunch here and at the end of the day, it’s a great place to meet up and hang with friends for a quiet drink. FC

Over priced and definitely not worth $ 50 for 2 sandwiches. Ruben was so soggy that when you went to pick it up it fell apart. Seafood sandwich was all imitation seafood. Service was horrific, waited 30 minutes for our sandwich, probably was sitting on a counter which would explain the soggy bread. When the server asks you if you’d like potato salad, pasta salad or coleslaw one would think it comes with the meal, it doesn’t, but it will only set you back 4 bucks. Save your money, you’d be better off at Subway.

Yet another validation that Unilocal is a great resource for finding great places. Based on the recommendations, I visited there today. Corn beef sandwich was perfect. Nice booths, great bathroom jokes like«don’t flush the toilet before the train has left the station.» If you like that joke, then you will love this place to eat..

Went today for Lunch with my Aunt. She said«it looks like we’re paying for the tablecloth, but I like tablecloths.» I had a Caesar Salad with Marinated Chicken, She had a Garden Salad with Tuna Salad. My Caesar had amazing garlic croutons. The chicken might have been marinated, but was flavorless. Plus there was enough provolone cheese for 2 meatball subs, which I found to be odd. Her Garden salad looked good, but the Tuna Salad seemed like they dumped out a can of albacore, mixed in a few green onions and a ¼ teaspoon of Mayo. They could have tried a little harder. Coffee was good. Came back to work and told a few co-workers I ate there. They said oh we always walk by that place, I said Keep Walking.

Went over for a quick lunch at 12:30 and found a seat at the bar… some of my colleagues were in from Chicago at a table… but I stayed at the bar to visit with Gina. She had just gotten married that weekend! Congratulations Gina. She is the BEST, and here service is top notch. Food is exceptional, and if you eat a bowl of chowdahr and a sandwich you will be full long past dinner… 1 clam chowder cup 5.95 1 Arnold Palmer 2.95 1 Turkey Breast Sandwich 10.50 Total — $ 20.76

I had no idea this place existed. If it hadn’t been for the thirty minute wait at The Vault then I wouldn’t have discovered it. Turns out this place is probably one of the best places for lunch in Boston. We were a party of five and managed to snag a tall, comfortable booth. The inside is surprisingly nice and like another review said, it’s got a 1920s-ish feel to it. But onto the food… Um, this place is serious about sandwiches. Really. They don’t play around. Three of the people I was with ordered sandwiches. They were all gigantic, crazy looking, and, judging from their reactions, delicious. I opted for a chicken caesar salad which was over flowing(and they were ridiculously generous with the croutons and chicken… so much for trying to not be too unhealthy). The wait staff were extremely attentive, friendly, and best of all, quick. I couldn’t get over how quickly our food came.

I’ve walked by Bakey’s hundreds of times(usually shuttling between vault and dooleys) and never stopped in. Tonight I was looking for a quiet place for dinner with some friends. Its a small upscale looking bar/restaurant. One you’d expect to find in a financial district. Upon entering, I saw the white table cloths and I figured it be a fine place for dinner… yet, its really only a sandwich place. The menu is primarily composed of cold sandwiches and salads. The only thing warm to grab on a cold winter’s night was soup… we order clam chowder… fine. Friendly and attentive service. In short, a tidy little bar, full of regulars after work(closes early) that happens to server a wee bit to eat.

For lunch, this place is kind of expensive given it’s sandwiches, salad and soup with a few dinner-style entrees. But the portions are big and well-prepared — not fancy, but good. Kind of a businessperson crowd during the week for lunch — gets pretty crowded. Service is good.

Excellent, yet EXPENSIVE sandwiches. Don’t go here for a drink — you won’t be able to hear your guest over the«regulars» doing«trivia night» up at the bar. Loud and obnoxious — espeicially when you’re the only other people in the bar. Annoying.

Cool place… I didn’t eat but the sandwiches looked really good and from what others were saying tasted the same! Prices seemed a little on the high side for sandos and chips but I guess when you’re in the financial district price is not an object. The one bartender did a great job of keeping our large group well supplied with beverages. I liked the quaint atmosphere and enjoyed both glasses of wine I had. It certainly is a good place to start an evening!

Never eaten here, but the bar scene at night is classic. One bartender was there, Laurie. She is a doll. So friendly, so kind, so attentive. So what? So, get here. Will definitely be back for beers someday, and probably for lunch at some point as well. It wasn’t too crowded on Tuesday the 30th when I sidled up to the old school mahogany bar with some co-workers. There was an elderly couple sitting down in the opposite corner, enjoying each others’ company. That was the theme of the night. Several groups /couples, kickin it, relaxing. They have a pulpit near the door, upon which rests a 1951 Webster’s Dictionary(UNABRIDGEDMINDYOU!), out of which we got quite the kick. I brought it to the bar, and since my seat was right near the flip-up part where Laurie had to walk back and forth, I had to keep lifting it up for her and flipping up the leaf hinges so she could get back to crackin cold brews. I also struck up a conversation with a meat cuttress who was cleaning off the deli slicer. They have Boars’ Head meats… not bad, except that I had asked about prosciutto, and we all know that San Daniele is the only way to go there. Pissah atmosphere: warm, welcoming. Wilhelm. Feels like home, especially with the heating pipes vibrating. Clean, but classic old décor and back in the day charm. SOGOOD, in fact, that not even the weird elevator music(no joke, straight up calming-unassuming-unoffensive-happy-shopper-1978-welcome-to-the-new-economy-and-your-friendly-neighborhood-mega-mall, Mrs. Schwartzky-no-more-gas-shortage-but-still-need-to-protect-daughter-from-football-playing-Black-Sabbath-fan-who-lives-down-the-street) could annoy me. What a joint. Top 5 Bars in Boston.

No thrills and kinda straight to the point. There’s nothing extraordinary or special about their menu which is largely dominated by sandwiches, salads and a few soups. That being said, they do simple very well. I wasn’t wowed by anything which I received but I certainly wasn’t disappointed at what was served. My sandwich(some kinda thanksgiving dinner all rolled into one) was right on point, the turkey was amazingly fresh and all ingredients were well executed and presented. I’m not sure I would go back because I enjoy a more diverse menu, but it’s definitely a place for a serious sandwich fan looking for a solid lunch in the Financial District.

Bakey’s is synonomous with the Financial District’s casual power lunch; although, I think I just made up the term casual power lunch… But whatever. The throwback décor(Feels like twenties or maybe late thirties?) and theme lends itself to reminding Bakey’s patrons of an earlier time when in Boston, Finance was king, and bowler hats and fedoras dominated the crown’s of the cobblestone kings From State Street to Summer. It’s the kinda place you’d expect the patrons to be puffing on a pipe or cigar with the wall street journal spread out infront of them as they sipp on coffee or maybe something stronger while chomping away at a thinly sliced roast beef sandwich. Minus, the tobacco, thats pretty much what Bakey’s is today. Sandwiches are simple, but hearty, as are the sides and entrees, but you’d really expect nothing else from a place that has the front fascia of a chromed up classic car on the wall. The service is usually courteous and quick, and no one is rushed out despite the fact that dozens are usually waiting if it’s any where close to lunch hour. All in all, Bakey’s is nothing extroadinary, but in some cases that’s all it takes to make an eatery great.

I’ve been trying to check out Bakey’s a couple years now but things have always gotten in the way. I finally got a chance last week with a few coworkers. This place definitely lives up to the hype. Hearty sandwiches and quick service. We had no problem getting a booth on a Friday evening. If they offered french fries it would have been a perfect score.

Surprisingly elegant and upscale inside. I love the large booths. The restaurant is on a corner which in my mind makes it all the more appealing. The food is always tasteful. Waitstaff are professional and more upscale than many restaurants. Their crabcakes are excellent and filled with crab.
