Al Capone’s is a long, narrow restaurant that isn’t very clear on where to go to order and pay. You walk in and all the way down to order a grinder. The cashier is located right inside the door. I ordered the Italian cold cut grinder. The junior size was more than enough for me. I couldn’t figure out why this particular grinder tasted different and better in a way than other Italian grinders that I have had in the past, until I realized that they put bologna on it! What a delicious and unexpected surprise! The bread was nice and fresh as well. There were several types of pizza that looked really good. I’ll have to come back another time to try. Fast service.

1st time going here and it was blah! Had the steak and cheese sub and it was really flavorless. It’s bad when you can taste the bread and pickles over the meat flavor. Another co-worker of mine who agreed also said the steak reminder her and myself of Steak-ums! Ha! Plus the lady messed up the sandwich. Will not be going back here again! Go to Al’s around the corner. MUCH better!!!

You walk in and it is a little bit of mayhem. There is no direction whatsoever, just 2 or 3 tables to the left and the coolers for drinks and the cashier in front of you. After a mob of people move, you will be able to see the small aisle space you walk down to get to the end of the shop. At the very back there is a sign that says Dining, so I am going to guess that there is a small sitting area there. There are also 2 lines, the hot stuff line(grilled items/salads) and the cold sub line. There’s no particular line forming, but the theory is you walk in to the back of the line and move towards the register. Once the people behind the counter finish and wrap those mammoth things of wonder they are calling subs, they just say«who is next?» so please, be honest. There’s a menu board in the back showing what they have in the grill station, as well as the cold station. I didn’t pay attention to what they had since I wasn’t trying to decide on what I wanted. I know they have hot subs, cold subs, salads, some specials, and typical pasta dishes. In the giant deli case they have a section of things like lasagna, ziti, etc. cooked and ready to order for you. Up came my turn and I ordered my small Italian sub, everything on it but oil(in work clothes), extra pickle. While making the sub, the lady double-checked on a few things. I don’t know if I should knock off a star because she didn’t remember, or add one because they are giving you a chance and/or making sure they aren’t messing up your order. She piled on all the topings, then asked if I wanted American cheese! OHYESPLEASE! No oil & vinegar. Thank you. I really think she gave me a large. There’s no such thing as one handing this sub, you need both hands. Off I went to the cashier, grabbed a bag of Dirty«Roasted Garlic and Herb» chips(they sucked, btw) and paid. It was $ 8.something for what was literally about the size of 2 small subs, and most likely an overpriced bag of chips(overpriced even if they were good). I got back to the office and was once again amazed by the size of what I had in my hands(That’s what she said! [for those The Office fans]). And it was good, real good! The red onions(bermuda maybe?) were sliced thin so they didn’t overpower anything. The lettuce wasn’t shredded iceberg either, so thumbs up there as well. The pickles(which I had extra of) were tasty too. The ingredients were fresh and you can tell, and the subs are definitely made with love. The cost wasn’t much different than other spots, but considering the fact that you can absolutely get 2 meals out of it, there’s no doubt you get value for your buck. Maybe they’ll come out with an extra small sub which is what a normal small is. I know they have a 20 inch sub for around $ 12 – 13 which can, in all reality, feed 4 people. The steak and cheese sub is also really good and made fresh(as opposed to some places that precook all the beef). To be honest, I haven’t tried a lot of their stuff. The meatball is pretty tasty if a little on the average side. Menu Selection: Very Good Price: Good — Very Good Value: Excellent Cleanliness: Very Good Parking: N/A Overall: Yes, and maybe next time bring 5 of my friends and try the large!

Al Capone’s has it’s ups & downs, but I come here for lunch sometimes. I can recommend the hamburger and cold cuts, good luck with their other selections. I tried a steak sub from here once and it gave me an upset stomach, I almost gave up on this place. The french«fries» are baked and after sitting under that light they become really soggy and unpleasant. Yes you will see flies flying all around the food. the servers sweating over everything. and your clothes will smell like this place for days, but if you’re willing to get over that you’ll be fine. The manager(I assume he is) is a nice guy and gives good customer service, but the other ladies are a bit rude sometimes and I’ve yet to see them smile or even smirk. I think they should come down on the prices just a little, and try not to cook the hell out of the cookies they give you as part of the combo.

By far, my favorite pizza around and good prices! My only negative is that they aren’t open on weekends.

Great chow and service! If you’re hungry and ambience is not a priority, this is the place.

I thought this place is great. The foods are good, the price is cheap and the location is right in the heart of downtown Boston. I love their breakfast special with 3 eggs, 2 pancakes, toast breads, beacon or sausage(your choice). Which cost about $ 8.00. Where can you get that kinda deal in downtown for food? The menu have various choices of sandwiches, pizzas, salads to choose from. The staffs here are very nice and friendly and they give you so much foods at a low price that you don’t get anywhere in downtown. The only downfall is the interior of the restaurant is very ghetto looking and a bit run down. They also have no AC, so in a hot summer day, the restaurant could be like a sauna inside.

Sandwiches here are pretty standard/basic, I got the chicken Caesar salad in a roll. It was loaded with chicken which is good, but it lacked flavored. I had only two croutons in my sub, which was kinda sad and it didn’t remind me of a chicken Caesar salad at all. it was like an okay cold chicken sub

Beyond yummy! My husband and son are still talking about their Al Capone’s lunch! We had the Italian Cold Cut sub w/hots, OMG even though I loved mine(Philly Cheese Steak) I would get that in a heartbeat! My little ones loved their pizza and it has that mom and pop feel that only Boston can provide.

Uh, my fiancée has found hair in her sub… long hair, twice. I haven’t, but I do recall that they don’t wear hair nets. It’s hot in there, they sweat(and wipe their sweat) a lot, and the big guy chef is pretty hairy… so yeah, twice. Not to mention their bread sits out in the open, perfect for fly landings and dung. Go to Al’s, not Capone. There are two around here, please find one. Only come here if you’re the«bang for your buck» type of person and don’t care who, where, and how someone prepares your food. For the prices of the subs and breakfast sandwiches it’s O.K. considering everything else i.e. ambiance and cleanliness, no. Also, if you order here. DONOT stand in here and wait for your order, and do not eat in here. You will smell like peppers, onions, cheese, and grease for the the rest of the day. You have been warned.

I stumbled upon Al Capone’s while exploring the area with my daughters. We decided to get a meat lovers pizza for dinner and it was delicious. I walked in and Rosa took my order right away and got our pizza started. We waited about 15 minutes for us to get our grub on and boy did we get our grub on. We had planned to make it back the next day to try the sandwiches, but we got so busy we never made it back. I was sad that they did not have wings but I survived either way. Rosa gave us some free cookies which my daughter loved. Prices are low for delicious food! I hope to come back for some sandwiches next time I visit Boston.

Food was good and the prices too, but they need a new hood exhaust, the smoke and food fumes filled the entire place and made my eyes burn and kinda made me sick, making it very uncomfortable to eat inside, and I smelled like food all day, also my bottled diet coke was warm :(

I have been here a few times and am not sure exactly sure why I keep coming back. The first I came was with my Dad and we ate pizza upstairs. BIG mistake since my fleece and I smelled like pizza for rest of the day. I think $ 4 is expensive for a slice of pizza especially if it is mediocre. I had a chicken Parmesan and steak works subs before. They were super greasy and lacking flavor. I’ll give them a star on their sub sizes for a decent price. I ordered a medium steak works sub for $ 10.17 and I had it for 2 meals. I don’t think I will come back here as there are so many sub and pizza places near work.

Not to be confused with Al’s State Street Café, this sandwich shop also serves subs, but is vastly different. I always get the junior size(the very smallest) and even this is enough to last for two meals. The bread is good and it’s not rushed like the other Al’s is. I’ve never had their hot subs(I’ve heard the other Al’s is better), but they make their cold subs in a Subway-style line: you pick your choice of bread, toppings, etc. They seem more authentic somehow, but I think I still prefer the other Al’s. This one does come with a variety of other foods, like pizza and pasta, if that’s more your style.

This place has been on my list to try since I started working in the financial district, but I got a little carried away with the myriad of other choices. I am way in to delis and picky about where I go, but I figured it was just another deli… it can wait until I’ve tried the more interesting places… Boy was I wrong. The bread! The breaaadddd. So good. I got the honey ginger chicken sub on wheat and it was very tasty. They have a pretty wide variety of stuff available as well. I was also pretty surprised at how low the price was, given the area. Definitely the cheapest lunch I’ve had around here in a while. Definitely recommended, you’ll probably see me in there regularly for the next few months until I find my next new place!

Let me get the cons out first: this is not the place where you want to go for your dates. The interior décor is nearly nonexistent, and the lack of air conditioning makes this literally a hot place to eat. That being said, you should not be deterred from coming to Al Capone’s. Traveling from Houston, we wanted something good and cheap to eat and this place delivered. My «slice» of BBQ chicken pizza was as nearly half of Domino’s medium pizza, and it was one of the best and most fulfilling BBQ chicken pizza I had. My sister ordered the garlic and pepper chicken junior sub, which came in a half-foot long sub overfilled with delicious chicken meat that was made right at the spot. We were completely full and the bill for three was only $ 15! I was so satisfied by this experience that I promised the cool, friendly owner that I would return again.(Sadly, I realized that I won’t be able to return any time soon because I was heading back to Houston) The bottom line is that if you want a good, cheap Italian pizza and subs without regarding the décor, go to Al Capone’s! — tl;dr version: 1. Not a well-decorated place to dine 2. Large portions of delicious pizza and subs at a very cheap price 3. Owner dude was super cool. Talk to him!

The«junior» is a huge sandwich made with fresh bread. Service was pretty speedy though not very friendly. I was probably in and out in 10 minutes. I suspect this was because i went just after the big lunch rush. The lunch combo includes a junior sized sandwich, small bag of chips, can of soda, and a cookie all for under 9 bucks… which is pretty good in my book. I do agree with Phil O who mentioned the fact that you’ll wreak of grease after going in here. i must say even though i got a cold ham and cheese sub i left smelling like a steak and cheese… I guess there are worse things to smell like?

Pros: This place gives you one of the best bangs for your buck in the area. Quick service, huge subs, and decent pizza. Cons: If you stay inside for longer than 10 minutes, or God forbid you dine upstairs, you’ll wreak of pure grease. Hopefully you don’t have to go back to work like the majority of customers.

I stumbled upon Al Capone’s while walking around downtown and being caught off guard by a pang of hunger. The place is not visually appealing, it looks kind of divey and hall of the wall. Definitely no thrills and far as welcoming designs or interior looks but when you’re hungry how the place looks is the last thing on your mind. Al Capone’s offers a lunch deal of a junior sub, bag of chips, cookie and soda for about 7 dollars with tax and when hunger that sounded like the perfect deal. The subs here are humongous, their junior sub is a probably 10 inches long and bigger than any other small sub that you would get at any other sub shop. And unlike some places bigger size doesn’t mean lower quality of food. I had the chicken cutlet Parmesan sandwich. Two nice sized pieces of chicken, lighted breaded and seasoned well that they dip in rich flavorful marinara sauce. The sub was delicious unfortunately it was too big and I couldn’t finish the entire thing. Ended up having to throw some of it away and I hate to waste food. Cookie they give you was also pretty tasty, couldn’t tell if it was fresh made or packaged. Nice little spot in downtown Boston, probably great spot or the occasional lunch, couldn’t eat there everyday with the size of their subs but definitely worth a visit because they give you quality food and a lot of it and a cheap price.
