Sat at the bar and watched the only waitress and both cooks pick their nose and touch their hair for an hour while handling people’s food. I gave this 2 Stars because the customers seemed to enjoy their food.

I am all sonrisas to hipster establishments with their own take on popular food dishes. My only complaint with Black Cat is that I walk out mas gordo than when I entered!

Not so vegan friendly! Yes, you can replace meat with tofu, and yes the beans are vegan, BUT… the rice has butter on it, and the guacamole is made with sour cream! Who makes guacamole with sour cream? I asked if they had avocados and could they put a few slices in my burrito and was told no, the avocados are for the guacamole! The food I was able to eat was tasty, but to me, Mexican food is all about the guacamole, so I won’t be going back.

Don’t let the décor fool you– food is excellent. Great tacos and fast service. We had the jerk chicken and chimachuri steak tacos– both excellent!!! Loved being able to grab a beer and sitting where we like while we waited. When downtown Boone is super busy and everyone else is waiting for a table at the artsy places– hit this place for a quick bite that will not disappoint.

Every burrito I’ve had has been delicious. The atmosphere is casual and comfortable. A must have if you are visiting Boone.

Grabbed a quick«to go» dinner at this cool place on the way through town. Neat & clean atmosphere inside. I ordered a «chicken wing» and my friend got a «build your own». Both were very fresh and a good size for the price. We each had a cold draft beer(about 4 – 5 on tap and a few bottles) while we waited for our order which came up quicker than we could finish our beers. We also had to check out there queso and chips. We both agreed that it was a good consistency and seasoned flavor. The slaw was fine, a nice accompaniment. Overall, worth the stop and we will go again.

Food is great. The selection of local craft beer is top notch. The reason for 3 stars: fruit fly hang out at the bar… they loved sitting on my pint of Hoppyum, I can’t blame them for liking good beer. However, it was annoying. My kids got free kids meal so I ordered a side of chips. I assumed chips came with salsa and I was told that salsa was an additional charge. The staff was annoyed of my assumption, maybe informing the consumer of this at check-out would have been nice. Overall good food.

I ordered the ‘Don’t Be A Jerk’ and it was an awesome burrito with a great jerky flavor. Black Cat has an awesome atmosphere!

Went on July 3rd, I had a good experience before… So I wanted to go back. Went in around 3PM, when we ordered our food the server told us it «would be awhile» because they were backed up. This was ok, in a place designed like this(order up front, make burritos etc, get food delivered) I thought it would be like 20 – 30 min, it was an hour and ten minute wait to get a quesedilla and some nachos. I just think if they see people waiting and the food would be over an hour a nice thing to do is 1. Check in on them after 30 min 2. Offer some free chips/salsa 3. Get some sort of free food. It was ridiculous and it wasn’t even packed(about 2 – 3 tables were empty)

I chose the«satay it to me softly» burrito. Bad decision. It was a combination of old, soggy rice, mushy frozen vegetables, 5 small bits of chicken, and some watered down peanut butter sauce. Not worth a dollar, none the less eight. Service was poor and staff went from taking money, to sweeping, to mopping, then to take chips out of the tortilla chip container, all without gloves or washing hands in between. Saw the kitchen staff wipe sweat off their foreheads, with their bare hands, while preparing food. 0 out of 10, would not go again

I used to eat at Black Cat a lot as a student and coming back 10 years later they still hit the funky burrito mark. Service is at the counter and since students were on vacation we did not have to wait. My husband order the jerk burrito and and I got the Thai me up with shrimp. Both came with slaw and chips. I added a side of mango salsa which was a large amount for just 75 cents. Their mango salsa is fresh without being too sweet. My burrito was excellent. The sunflower seeds add a nice crunch. The raw spinach gave the burrito a freshness and they put plent of shrimp in it. My husband liked his burrito as well. The chips and slaw are good sides for the burritos. Prices are reasonable as well. We ate for under 20 bucks.

I had don’t be a jerk burrito. It came with a huge burrito coleslaw and chips. The burrito was great and spicy the slaw was fresh. The chips… Well the plate didn’t come with salsa like every other Mexican restaurant I’ve ever gone too. $.75 cents if you want to enjoy your chips. Kind of a pricy menu to not include that. All together a good spot, a little pricy on the drinks and yes no salsa. Definitely an American spin on the burrito«tex-mex» still good but not authentic.

Burritos were meh. Flavor were good but the steak was chewy. Chicken tasted like a dirty stove and the queso is really nacho cheddar. I tried their philly burrito and chicken burrito. They also won’t make you tacos if you ask, so don’t ask.

The Don’t be a jerk burrito is not for the faint of heart, nor palate. It’s big, full of rice and black beans and a ton of jerk seasoning. I chose chicken over the shrimp or tofu selections. Based on the flavor I think the shrimp would be really tasty also. Comes with slaw and tortillas, $ 11 with a tea(unsweetened). Order at the counter and pay when you come in. Menu, taped to the countertop, had an intimidating number of selections. 5 beers on tap ranging from Pabst(Boone is a college town) to Foothills Porter and Green Man Hopium. Only about 10 tables, a 6-seat bar, and lots of character. Can’t wait to come back.

Three stars for the long wait. Burrito was Thai and tasty but took way too long. Did enjoy the big portion and couldn’t finish one myself, that’s for sure!

My boyfriend and I recently visited Boone, NC for a short vacation. We spent the day walking around downtown and popped in to a bar for a drink and to check the game scores where we met the owner of this place. She recommended we check it out for dinner. She was super nice and fun to talk to and as a small business owner myself I like supporting other small business owners. I can’t rate the food because we didn’t eat here. The menu looked great and I was excited to try it out. I waited in line with my boyfriend for a while to place our order but I have an autoimmune disease that causes fatigue and extreme joint pain and often can’t handle walking/standing for super long periods of time. He was next in line so I asked him if he minded ordering for me and I sat down at a table.(There were plenty of open tables and seats). A couple minutes later an employee came by, said he was the manager, and said that it was against their policy for me to sit down without having food. I explained the situation and that my boyfriend was next in their very slow moving line and he said he didn’t care, that’s their policy so that things«flow properly». The family in front of us in line were already at a table and the family behind us in line already had a table. Nobody else was looking for a table except people in the back of the line. He told me I had to get up and wait until I had food to sit down. I walked over to my boyfriend, a family who just walked in the door went over and took the table I’d be sitting at and other people behind us took every other table meaning that once we had received food we wouldn’t have had anywhere to sit so we left. Horrid customer service from this employee. Horrid.

I did not have a good experience at Black Cat this time. The cleanliness of this place is not what I expect from a restaurant. The food is always pretty tasty, but on my last visit, I took a look through the kitchen. With a 90.0 health score proudly displayed in a duct tape frame, the place has gotten pretty disgusting since my first visit. This time when I came, there was garbage all over the floor, the menu I picked up was sticky, and the whole place had a steamy, humid, environment. Not only do they not wear gloves, but the cooks use rusty prep bowls, and don’t wear hairnets or anything. The tofu in my burrito was also too soggy and was barely fried. Perhaps the most cringeworthy thing I saw is that they keep the chips in a rusted metal drawer in the bar area. When I watched the employee put chips on the plate with his bare hands(after touching one of the grubby toys they give out while you wait for your meal and not washing his hands) some of the chips fell onto the counter where the cooks serve the food. He shoved them back into the drawer to be served to guests. That just plain disgusted me. These kids just don’t know how to safely prepare food and that concerns me. I don’t hate black cat, but I won’t be back for a while. Something weird is up with the drink machine too, as my gingerale tasted like straight up B.O. Not to mention, the service was mediocre at best. A place I once really liked is now becoming a place I will probably avoid.

A great local, healthy dive. Good burritos, salads, tacos, and drinks. We built our own steak burritos and got the fish tacos and everything was great! The food was fresh and light. The slaw and chips that comes with the burritos was delicious. Good prices and way better than fast good Mexican. The eating area was nice and clean and so was the restroom. We will definitely be coming back!

Well, when you first walk-in it looks like a whole in a wall. Well, it actually is. Anyhow, the food is great & the prices are decent. They have really good burritos & you could also customize your own burrito. If you are feeling Mexican & want to grab a quick bite, this is the place. The ingredients inside the burritos are«gourmet» & it knocks Chipotle out of the water in comparison to ingredients. Black Cat Burrito is a little more pricier than Chipotle, but its worth the few extra bucks. The chips are okay & every burrito comes with slaw on the side.
