I wouldn’t recommend for deer processing. My son and I hunt throughout the hill country. We have seen Klein’s passing through Boerne for some time now, so we decided to give them a shot this season. Our girl taking the order was friendly, but the ordering process could definitely use some streamlining. Way to confusing and time consuming. We ordered jerky strips from our backstraps, jalapeño/cheese salami, fresh sausage, and snack sticks, and the rest in chili meat. When I got my order home I found about 20% of my packages to have lost their vacuum. You know what this means? Right, less shelf life in one way or another. Several of the salami packages appeared to have been older maybe from a previous process. Not only was the vacuum seal faulty, there was an appearance of freezer burn between the packaging and the product. The regular sausage would challenge Bill Miller for fat content. This is the greasiest deer sausage I have ever cooked. Bring your fire extinguisher, that’s all I can say. The snack sticks were going good until my son bit down into a small piece of blue plastic embedded in the snack stick itself. Now let’s not forget the jerky. My son will eat just about anything. I mean, this is the kid that would try the mystery dish at the local Asian dive. When he said the jerky sucked, that’s all it took for me. I don’t enjoy giving one star reviews because I know what it takes to run or ruin a business, but when you pay a premium price you should get better results.

My family drops in occasionally for BBQ meat to go for supper and it’s great and always hits the spot. But I would like to acknowledge the amazing smoked turkey breasts that ordered for both Thanksgiving & Christmas. They were absolutely amazing!!! Tender, juicy, & very very flavorful. Turkey has never been a hit over the holidays with my family until we discovered Klien’s smoked turkey.

Walk in. Girl watches us study the menu. Doesn’t say anything. Ask for ribs. «Oh, we’re out of ribs.» Okay, how about some sausage then… «Oh, we are out of sausage. All we have are sides.» Well then why didn’t you tell me that instead of watch me study your menu? Word of advice… be a little proactive and tell the customer what you have or don’t have available.

Just discovered this place using my Unilocal app to satisfy a desire to try some new Q. I spend lots of time in Boerne but wasn’t aware of this place. I ordered the combo meat poboy w sliced brisket & sausage. Extremely nice lady at counter took my order. I had already decided this was a to go visit which was good cuz dine in options/seating are limited. Doesn’t matter tho — cuz I would eat their bbq sitting on a fire ant mound & not mind it. It was that good. I really like smokey Q and especially with Oak smoke. The tasty smoke factor was immediately present on the 1st bite. Sauce(which i wanted) was awesome but no need because the tender meats were perfectly done & full of flavor. Sauce didn’t cover any flavor up like some lesser bbq places. Going back soon to buy bbq by the lb with sides too.

The Smokehaus is headed in the right direction, but not there yet. Since the change of ownership a almost a decade ago, they’ve done a good job of keeping what works(the BBQ) lowering the profile of what doesn’t work anymore(the fresh meat) and adding some genuine Texas Hill Country favorites(the smoked meats). Gavin still cuts meat in the back, and he probably helps with the smoke. The ‘cue is solid. I’d say it’s head-to-head with Boerne’s Riverside Market. If you get there too late, you may miss the ribs, which is not a great situation. Love the slaw. Adding two or three tables would be a good idea, but maybe that creates licensing issues or health dept issues or something. Parking is a serious problem and likely constrains their business. I feel like the place is under-recognized and under-developed. You don’t feel immersed in a BBQ joint like you do at Salt Lick, the original Rudy’s, Coopers in Llano or many other places. You pretty much take your sandwich and go. Some marketing expertise in the front of the house and in media would be a good idea. But it still wouldn’t solve the parking. There’s a lot of missed potential here, but I’d like to end with one important point: their sliced brisket po-boy is to die for.

Nothing fancy, not really a place to sit and eat but the best chopped barbecue you’ll ever put in your mouth. Don’t think you’re going to pick it up and eat while you drive though. You get so much meat you’re going to need to find a place to pull over and use a fork.

Great place for buying meat. They will cut it and package it anyway you like. Also love their bbq sandwiches.
