RUN. Seriously, it was that bad and I’ll tell you why. Yes I know it’s «Chinese American food» but oh my goodness this was the worst restaurant I have ever been to. My boyfriend and I had the«dinner for 2». This included egg rolls, cream cheese, soup of the day, orange chicken and chicken almond. 1. Soup of the day: NASTY! It came out dark brown, thick, and had huge mushroom pieces and Unknown meat in there along with random dark vegetables. Honestly, it looked like sewage. We tried to eat it all but barely scratched the surface because the taste was horrible. 2. Egg roll: this was 99% cabbage and 1% tiny shrimp. This came with sweet and sour sauce that was the cheap kind. We didn’t finish 1 egg roll. 3. Cream cheese: the previous person wrote a review saying this was soggy… They were definitely right. One of the cream cheese’s didn’t even have much cream cheese in it. Really bad. 4. Orange chicken: it was SOBAD we had to cut it open with a steak knife. Definitely not fresh and i had giant vegetables that weren’t even cut properly for a little kid to eat. I had ¼th of a tomato on my plate… Why? 5: chicken almond: it’s the same hard/chewy/not fresh meat found in the orange chicken. It was horrible. The waitress came by to ask«how is your food?» When I said«honest, it’s just okay» the waitress replied«okay» then walked away… Really? You can see we have barely touched our food and you can’t find out why we’re having a bad experience? The couple next to us didn’t even want their leftovers… We left almost all the food there and it was a waste of $ 40. Extremely disappointed.

I’ve been enjoying Fong’s for about two decades. Char, Deena, Lynda, Miyoshi and Eddie(the owner) are all great hosts. Sesame Chicken is excellent, Kung Bo(chicken cashew) is also a favorite. Crab Rangoon and potstickers are always fried crisp and hot. Special order General Tso’s(dinner only). Love this place!

A Minnesota institution and tradition. Some of my favourite family outings were to David Fong’s and I have fond memories of thus.

Decided to give this place a try as the majority of reviews have been positive. Stopped in for take-out on a Saturday evening. Intrigued by the retro feeling atmosphere, disappointed by the food. Appeared to be lower quality meat as it was chewy and lacked freshness. Disproportionate amount of cream cheese to wonton ratio; just a smidgen of cream cheese was used. Equally disappointed by the crab rangoon. Note: I typically judge a Chinese restaurant on their Lo Mein, of which I did not order this visit. Perhaps a return visit will be in order for some Lo Mein.

I have been coming here for 40 years… my entire life. I still have yet to find a place that makes a comparable beef lo mein or chow mein… and a great sesame chicken… amazing egg rolls. This has been a family favorite for decades! It is now my childrens favorite…4 generations… see you next time we are in Minnesota!

I’ve read the other reviews and was put off, but it wasn’t enough to keep me from trying this place. I’m glad I did. The service was great, atmosphere was fun and the food tasted awesome. I recommend their cream cheese wontons, egg rolls and sesame chicken with fried rice. Plenty to eat for the next day as well. Oh, and don’t leave without having a few of the signature Mai tai. Karaōke sounds great there as well. If it’s not your thing then pull tabs in the other bar with a great jukebox is waiting for you.

Worst Chinese food I’ve ever had. It was covered in corn syrup andv reheated. If you enjoy Chinese food do not eat here

We went to David Fongs last night. The décor was fine. A bit retro but it felt clean. The staff was decent but not overly welcoming. I felt our waitress would rather be folding napkins than serving our dinner. The food was bland and soggy. The cream cheese wontons were served sitting in a pool of grease. The wrappers were thick and hard to bite through, but not at all Crispy. The entrees were bland and the quality of meat was not very good. My sesame chicken had nasty chunks of what resembled chicken fat. Anyway, we ate it. I won’t go back. Disappointing in too many ways.

I tried the sesame chicken, medium heat. Which had good flavor but it was nothing extraordinary. Substituted white rice with fried rice which was about as good. Cream cheese puffs were pretty terrible sadly. Won ton wrap was too thick and a task to bite through. Not much cheese inside. Sweet and sour sauce was awesome so I was especially disappointed about the puffs. The third star is only included in my rating cause I thought our server was great and I enjoyed our visit anyhow.

Favorite Chinese eatery… Bar none! I grew up in Bloomington and had Fongs weekly and I still crave it. Chic chow mien is the bomb along with great lo mein. Try a Mai-tai or two but don’t try to drive as they are strong.

Unless you are a pretentious hipster or an uptight suburbanite germaphobe, this is the place for you. Red vinyl booths with red crazy carpeting=awesome. The food is plentiful and our waiter was attentive but not overbearing. I have had better Chinese food but never in a 1958 setting. If you like Liquor Lyles in Minneapolis, you’ll enjoy this place. Kinda gritty, kinda old school and the best thing is, I am fairly sure they don’t realize it.

The only Asian person in here is the hostess. Why do people eat here? It was literally all older white people that apparently have never eaten good Asian food. This food is SO over priced. $ 16 for tofu and broccoli? The décor is a 1950s steakhouse with Asian decorations. I’m typing this as I wait for my check while staring at my empty water glass. Ugh.

Just watched the ‘Searching for General Tso’ documentary last night so had a renewed appreciation for Chinese immigrants wanting to make a living in the US. Of course they had to adapt to American tastes. The décor is really neat. Very big space with a bar. Our server was very friendly. To our suprise General Tso’s chicken was only on the dinner menu so we ordered sesame chicken as our server suggested. My boyfriend wanted it extra spicy but it didn’t really have any kick to it. My broiled walleye was decent. For the price point it was ok. Although you could go to a chinese buffet and get a better value. We were the only asians there. Definitely more of an american take on chinese food.

Fongs is a rare treat. It’s tough to find Chinese food that stands out or a restaurant that has been open for more than 5 years. Usually they don’t last and I bet you can’t guess why. These guys have 50 plus years and still truckin. That’s impressive. We had the dinner for three. It was awesome. Steak was really tender, chicken dish was great and the sweet and sour pork was unlike any I have had before. Big chunks of juicy pork, not little pre-cooked cubes. Super good egg rolls and wontons! They also had karaōke going on and poker on Mondays. The prices were perfectly acceptable. Next time I’m trying the famous chicken chow mien!

We were at Fong’s last week for a very special family gathering. While we had a large group, we did call in advance. Here’s my take on the night @ Fong’s ~ I’d say the staff was ok. Took a long time to get food ordered and to the table. I had ordered vegetable fried rice, but received chicken fried rice. When I pointed it out, it was brought to the kitchen. A long while later, a different tray of fried rice came out. It seemed to be overly done, and STILL had chicken in there. It seems like they may have tried picking the chicken out of the original chicken fried rice, but I guess I will never know ??? My husband and I felt sick all night and through the next day; we were the only ones for some reason to had gotten sick and the only ones who had the chicken fried rice. We got Fong’ed up, but it won’t happen again! Had we not gotten sick, I’d say it was a 2.5 to 3 star place. Most people said the appetizers were good, but their main dishes were bland or just ok.

I went to the bar mid afternoon to meet a friend. Drunken blue collar workers were swearing in the bar«fucking cunt» and«fag» were repeated over and over. I asked the bartender if they could tone it down. He said hey little lady. This is a working man’s bar. If u can’t handle the language the door swings both ways. I asked the manager for assistance. The situation got only slightly better. Scary offensive place and not safe for females.

Bland, terrible, aweful, gross, dry food. Even s&p couldn’t fix it. I tried the tasting menu for 2 and was awfully dissatisfied. Course 1 was ½ of an egg roll cut into 2 quarters with 2 wontons. It was a disappointment that we didn’t get 2 egg rolls(since we ordered the tasting for 2 people). Then came the egg drop soup which needed heaping amounts of s&p. This was followed by a very dry sweet and sour chicken and the cashew chicken, both awfully terrible, and fried rice which I believe was rice-a-roni. I’ve never been to an Asian restaurant where they messed up fried rice. For dessert, fortune cookies. I really wish I could get back the 1 hour of my life that I wasted here. So sad for what I thought was a Bloomington staple! Of all the aforementioned, the egg roll, wontons and the fortune cookie were very good.

I grew up in Bloomington and always astound that this place still exist… I can’t think a single dish why I would eat here… Yes, they serve alcohol… Yes, they have Karoke night… Yes, they might even have card games(is it legal?) on some nights… Yes, they have plenty of ‘American’ dishes… then why even bother with the crappy Chinse decore? Heck I would be impress if I get an Asian hostest/waiter/waitress… Bottom line, I can’t find a single asian person in my life recommends me this place… I would be lucky to find an Asian person eat there. Hence we are done talking.
