On a recent trip to NC to Mean City Cycles in Maiden for my husband to have his Harley seat modified and my visit to the FURNITUREMART in Hickory, we stopped in Black Mtn to go to a fabric store and found thid place. I am a kitchen gadget freak and just went. Nuts. They are so pleasant and helpful. I found things thst I couldn’t find in Chefs Catalog or at the Food Network Store. Leave dinner in the oven to burn and get over to see them. I’m going back real soon.

If I’m judging on the cool factor of all the neat gizmos they have for a kitchen, they’d get 4 stars. If i’m judging on how the only associate in the entire store couldn’t stop stocking a shelf long enough to smile, say hi or ask if I needed any help, they’d get two stars. Stainless steel turtle to make your own Black and Tans — giant skull cake/baking pans for Halloween(or kids who like Danzig) — lots of cookware and gadgets — Cuisinart appliance section. I even tried making eye contact a couple of times(and no not in a creepy way) with no success. My take is that this is a neat place for Foodie stocking stuffers, but the prices are up there with Williams Sonoma/Sur la Table.

Awesome«toy store for foodies» as they say. I am not a foodie or even any good at cooking, and I enjoyed this shop. Any and every cooking tool, utensil and chatchke you can think of in not a huge place. Also a lot of reasonably priced gifts! You walk in and immediately smell something awesome. You get down the aisle a bit and see a sign that says«This is what you’re smelling!» Yummy smelling candles in three different sizes. I guess the lit shopper-bait changes daily. This particular day it was something like Toasted Espresso and it was scent-ual. ;) The ladies behind the counter are super friendly and helpful. Everything is priced and cleary marked and there are even discounts. Pie whistles, dutch ovens, spatulas, wisks, spoons in every material and color, collanders, spoon holders that clip to pans, tea infusers, drinking glass sets, Star of David cookie cutters, fridge magnets, some thing that separates the egg yoke from the egg… and so much more. I would compare it to Sur La Table as being as good but with all the little«inexpensive small items cracks» are filled. Meaning you can get a decent deal or find some cheap goodies.

This place is amazing! They have everything you can imagine for cooking, baking, coffee making, etc… Try the candles from Swan Candle Company. Next time I visit Black Mountain I will be stocking up on the candles and lots of other specialty items as well!

The Common Housefly is a jam-packed store full of unique and useful kitchen utensils, aprons, cookbooks, dishes, spices, tea and coffee and cookware. I visited Black Mountain in July to reconnect with a bunch of my relatives in Asheville. They come to Black Mountain a lot, but apparently had never been in The Common Housefly before. Cumulatively, I think we spent two hours trying to look at everything. Mind you this was a group of about 6 women who love to cook, but still. The staff is very welcoming and helpful. I bought some rocket ship shaped popsicle molds and a set of very useful silicone cup egg poachers that I had never encountered before. The apron I purchased was $ 25 and a really cute design. I noticed they had a good-sized sale section and there seems to be pretty much something for everybody at The Common Housefly. Be sure to check it out and when you’re done, grab a gelato or chocolate next door at Chocolate Gems!
