The first thing that attracted me to Dr. Olivia Lang were her credentials. The following excerpt was taken from the Berkeley Pediatric website: «She completed her undergraduate education in Human Biology at Stanford University. Dr. Lang then moved to Berkeley where she was in the UC Berkeley-UCSF Joint Medical Program where she obtained a Masters in Health and Medical Sciences from UC Berkeley. She received her M.D. and pediatric residency training from UCSF.» … and she also has experience raising twins. I still remember my very first encounter with Dr. Lang. It was April 2013. I was very pregnant and trying to secure a pediatrician in the East Bay for when my first daughter was finally born… and I had no real idea what I was doing. I walked in with handouts I had printed from Babycenter and some other parenting website filled with questions to ask. Dr. Lang provided the ideal answer to each one in her introduction and covered each item on my list… BEFORE I even asked a question. I wasn’t completely sold on exclusively breastfeeding(which I ended up doing and am still currently nursing my 22-month-old with no definite end in sight) and when I encountered some issues early on with getting my little one to latch, and Dr. Lang patiently provided useful advice throughout the entire process. My daughter was also diagnosed with a UTI at some point and Dr. Lang called me on a Sunday to discuss some further tests she recommended to determine if my daughter had kidney reflux. Dr. Lang always calls back within a few hours when you call with medical questions… no matter how ridiculous you eventually realize they were. Dr. Lang is charming and(clearly) knows how to interact with kids, knowing how to distract them and generally calm them down when they’re apprehensive about getting examined. She shows empathy towards me as a Mom and has a generally decent bedside manner while being straightforward when she disagrees with you or feels like there’s room for improvement. 22.5 months later, we definitely don’t always agree on parenting techniques or sleep training methods but we don’t have to. We just have to agree on her medical choices and I wholeheartedly appreciate her restraint on overmedicating children and performing extra procedures(simple or otherwise) when not truly necessary.(You shouldn’t need a doctor to tell you that vaccines are the absolute greatest victory in public health management and that your child NEEDS them, but at a time when ignorance and fear has caused parents to opt out of vaccinating their children and caused a resurgence in something like measles that was considered eradicated over a decade ago, I also appreciate that she doesn’t accept patients who don’t follow the recommended vaccine schedule without a valid medical reason.) We may be moving out of the country for a few months or up to two years and I will certainly miss having Dr. Lang as our pediatrician and having Berkeley Pediatrics as our clinic.

Dr. Lang is my daughter’s pediatrician. Claire is 6 weeks old and we’ve been so impressed by our entire experience. Dr. Lang practices at Berkeley Pediatrics and the whole group has been great. Not only did she come to the hospital on a Sunday to check on Claire when she was born, but two of the other doctors also came by on Monday and Tuesday to take a look. It was very reassuring to first time parents. We also love the technology that Dr. Lang uses. She uses a touchpad notebook so she can show us up to date graphs and charts of Claire’s progress and percentiles. She’s never in a rush and we have yet to wait more than 10 minutes to see her. She’s practical and warm — a great fit for our family.
