My brother decided to start riding to work so he was in need of a bike. We hadn’t heard of Berkeley Cycle Works but we’re glad we decided to check it out. Mike was incredibly kind and helpful. He explained the differences in the bikes he showed us and patiently answered all questions. He didn’t try to push my brother towards anything more than he needed. And he encouraged my brother to ride around the block, despite the fact that he was an inexperienced rider and could’ve scratched the bike. Additionally, when my brother asked me tag along somehow, Mike quickly brought out a bike for me. After the purchase, we asked for help loading it onto our bike rack and Mike spent a good 10 minutes making adjustments to the rack and tying things up for us. The personal attention and help was appreciated and we’re happy we brought our business to a fantastic local store.

Mike is awesome. I stopped by to get a bike and he recommend the Giant Liv. For a woman who is looking for a stable yet light bike, the Giant is a trusted brand (my mother owns one for 13 years… still good as new! The price is very nice, and so much cheaper than other cycle shops around the area.
Unfortunately, I got injured and couldn’t pick up my bike, so without any expectations, I called up Mike and he actually generously let me return my bike and refunded me. Mike is an honest businessman with compassion and so much more kindness than the average business owners. Highly recommended!

Fantastic help with my bike! I’m newish to riding and I needed help with getting my bike onto my trainer. Mike helped me out. I decided that I wanted to get a new cassette to put on my trainer so I didn’t have to keep taking the cassette off of my tire. Mike told me everything I would need to do and showed me how to make it happen on my own. He also offered to do it himself if I brought the trainer in. I bought a new cassette, the key tool to tighten the cassette, some other small things, and I was educated for $ 50 total.
I will happily continue to support this local business. The inventory, the help, and the dog all get the finest rating.

Came in with a broken bike and left 10 minutes later with a fixed bike. The guy who helped me was super friendly and helpful. Highly recommend. And the shop dog rules.

Wow, great new bike shop… where do I start… knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, experienced staff, great inventory… NO weird vibe that so many bike shops (unfortunately) have. This is my new «go to» bike shop in the east bay.
Bonus…easy to get to, right on San Pablo Avenue right around the corner from Acme bakery and Bartavelle coffee shop.

New to the area, all Giant brand bikes with what seem to be good prices. Service is excellent. My wife bought her commuter bike here and I plan to buy my recreational bike soon. Very happy with prices and service.

i went in today and bought a bike bell. it was functional, good looking and cost $ 11. the nice man even threw in a free rear reflector. the place was clean and well organized. i browsed the bikes they had in stock. they looked very nice and the prices seemed reasonable.
the man who helped me was very friendly… and helpful. i liked that even though i don’t know a single thing about bikes he was cheerful and patient. i will definitely be going back for my bike needs.

The guy gave me a free brake cable and i only paid for the labor. Affordable price too. Excellent customer service! Coming here again. This place is better than the ones in el sobrante

My son is very happy with the new Giant bike I bought at Berkeley Cycle Works. Mike knows everything about bikes, and was genuinely interested in helping my son find the right bike. It was a very no-​pressure sale. The price was fantastic, and he installed the accessories very quickly. Mike was very patient and helpful, and just made the purchase a whole lot of fun.
There are a lot of expensive bicycles these days, but my son just needed one to ride to school. But it shouldn’t look like it just wobbled out of Kmart, right? I think Mike gave us a great value on a bike that wasn’t very expensive, but still has a lot of quality and a great appearance. He didn’t try to up-​sell us to something more expensive. He understood that it was just for riding to school and locking up every day.
The Giant product line he carries is excellent. They used to manufacture Trek and Specialized bicycles, and now they manufacture their own. The quality of the frames, paint and components is excellent, and there’s a lot of breadth to the product line, from inexpensive cruisers up to serious, multi-​thousand dollar road and mountain bikes. Giant is definitely a brand to consider when buying a bike, at any price range. Their value is fantastic and I don’t see any compromises at all.

After much research I decided on a giant defy 5. The next step of course is going to my LBS in Alameda and seeing if they carry it. They pretty much laughed themselves out of my business for wanting such a «cheap» road bike. So I looked around for another bike shop. Berkeley cycle works website says they are a giant dealer. I call and they have a large defy 5 in stock. I go to get it and mike did a fit and we agreed that it was too big for me. So he ordered a medium/​large and provided a great fit and even gave me 10% off a bottle cage when I picked the bike up. Never once did he say that the bike was cheap or try to up sell me to a more expensive model. I’ll be recommending this shop to anyone looking for a non department store bike from now on.

Open later than most other shops and pretty close to El Cerrito.
The service was professional, quick and the owner was super friendly.

This is a great new shop. The owner Mike is very knowledgeable and courteous and has really good prices. He took the time to understand my particular situation and had a great solution in no time. His new bikes look great and well priced also, so that’s where I will go when new bike time comes…

I am a supporter of small business, especially if they give good service and carry a good product at a great value.
I came here looking for a commuter/​hybrid bike and the owner, Mike, hooked me up. Looks like his main product line is Giant. I test rode a couple of bikes and got excited about one of them. Given that it was a model from last year, it was discounted. For me the latest model didn’t matter as I wasn’t very picky, and I just wanted a quality bike. Picked up a few accessories for the bike as well and was happy with the recommendations given by Mike. I actually left the store and went to REI and test rode a few bikes there too. Not to diss REI because I really like them too, but Mike gave me the best value on a bike that worked best for me, and gave me the personal attention. So I actually went back later in the afternoon to Berkeley Cycle works and made my bike purchase. I’m a happy camper.

Brand new bike store in Berkeley that was able to change my ruined tire in no time. Chris did great work with my repair. He gave me a full detail report of what needed to be changed due to the damage I did to my rear tire. In no time, my bike had a new tire.
Mike the owner is awesome too. He showed my partner bikes that would fit his needs and price range, without any sales pitch. He was honest and wanted to find the best bike for him.
