The Bay Bridge was closed and I had to get into SF for surgery at 6:00am. I called the day before and asked for a pickup at 4:00am. I was told I needed to call back at 3:45am. When I did the man who answered acted as if I had awakened him and said in a very difficult to understand Indian accent that I had called the wrong number. I apologized profusely and carefully dialed again. Even though I dialed the correct number, the number on their website, the number I had called the day earlier to make the reservation, I still got the same sleepy man. After asking him to slowly repeat several times what he was saying, it became evident that even though I dialed the right number, this guy didn’t know anything about my reservation and wanted me to call some other number, which turned out to be the number for Yellow Cab Express. When I called Yellow Cab Express, the person answering didn’t know anything about my reservation, but arranged to send a cab to pick me up. It arrived about 4:05am and I was able to catch the BART and make it to my surgery. I have no objection whatsoever to having immigrants from any country driving taxis — so long as they know where they’re going — but I can’t stand it that the person hired to dispatch calls can’t speak English clearly. If the dispatcher can’t make himself clear, or understand the caller, then how can one expect the correct address to be taken down and followed.
