Enrolled in group DBT with Elizabeth and Christine Phelan. Was not helpful for me, but due to the way the program is set up, you are still billed for the remainder of the program regardless of whether you choose to withdraw or not. I felt like I was being financially penalized for a therapy that simply didn’t work for me.
Overall, group made me uncomfortable as an Asian American because the program appropriates Buddhist teachings in a decontexualized environment. I tried to stick with it as long as I could, but I didn’t enjoy being told how to meditate in a certain way, according to a manual written by a white person with no background in Buddhist teachings. But since Bellingham is white-​dominant, I don’t see this being a problem with most.
I would also not recommend services with Elizabeth or Christine if you are genderqueer, nonbinary, agender, or trans*; both providers consistently misgendered a group member and also referred to them by the wrong name. You should not have to teach your healthcare provider how to do their job or respect your identity. Enough said.
I give her two stars because she referred me to a doctor who was actually able to help me. Group was an expensive waste of time.
While I think she would be great for some, my experience overall was poor.
