In Soviet Russia, coffee drinks you to wake up! Speaking of Kremlin related stuff, the Soviet Mocha is FANTASTIC. Jim & Patty’s honors the hammer and sickle with a dollop of(dairy) sour cream dropped into a decadent combination of dark drinking chocolate, a shot of black tiger espresso(a robust demonstration of strength… like Putin riding bear), and whipped cream. The sour cream cuts the sweetness of the chocolate and adds a subdued zest. Hail to our supreme leader and father to all, Comrade Lenin for proudly bestowing the Motherland’s contribution to this delightful little shop. I also had the hipster bowl. Mine was really hot, but that’s because I ate it before it was cool. The bowl is a half portion, so be sure to get the regular biscuits and gravy if you’re hangry. This place gets crowded in the mornings and weekends. Comrade Johnny out.

This is now our official favorite breakfast place! We came here by chance and will definitely be back. Homemade biscuits are amazing! Coffee shop side was also very tasty. The place is very clean and lively with people.

The Black Tiger Mocha is awesome! Great atmosphere, nice people and good location. We could not get connected to the Internet — not so important.

I had the hipster bowl, which is basically an over-easy-egg on top of biscuits and gravy with a veggie sausage. Yum! I was expecting to be underwhelmed honestly, but it’s tasty and filling for a nice size breakfast. Thumbs up from this LA visitor! My one caveat, which isn’t a big deal… if you share this business through Unilocal,it will lead you to the wrong address off the 99W… which my out-of-town friend was led to a random house about 15 – 20 minutes away :-(

Their sweet Lorraine breakfast sandwich on biscuits is amazing. The caramelized onions on it really brings out the perfect pinch of sweetness. Felt like the small coffee is very… small. They also have just one big table, a bar like table by the glass, and then a bunch of small tables. I came in a group of three and felt like one of the small tables don’t sit 3 comfortably, and couldn’t sit at the bar because we wouldn’t be facing each other.

OMG — they now make a GF Princess Oatmeal coffee cake. And it is sublime. Well, there’s no excuse to not eat here several times a week anymore! Besides great coffee drinks, you can also get a brewed black ice tea here without all the flavored crap so many places use now. Coffee People, you da best!!!

My grandma and I were visiting and I wanted to take her someplace local for breakkie. I found Jim & Patty’s on Unilocal and it did not disappoint. Grandma had never tried biscuits and gravy before but this is one of her new go to dishes for breakfast — the Hipster Bowl with the biscuit, gravy, egg and bacon and for the price, portion and taste she was super happy. I had 2 biscuits and gravy which was way too much so ended up taking half home and I also ordered a Mango smoothie was a meal itself. We also tried Pig Newtons which is like a sausage roll and it was so yummy we took some for the folks we were staying with. Glad to have found this local joint, service was great and price is really great for the serving size. See you next time I’m in Portland!

Everything, including both food and beverages, are amazing here. Baristas are well trained on how to properly pour a shot, and service is always great. I’ve visited many, many times and have never had any issues. Until now. This has happened the last two times in a row I’ve been in. I’ve ordered an iced soy latte(insert yummy flavor I feel like that day) and BOTH times the barista has given me regular milk. Now, the first time I was able to catch it, the barista apologized and it was fine. But the second time it was actually hard to tell as I was drinking the coffee. I’m not a strict vegan, however I did fall pretty ill the next day with terrible cramps, bloating and well, you know what else. I make it clear and make sure to say soy milk, and even check to be sure it’s written on the cup. I guess I’ll double triple check next time…

I don’t know shit about coffee, but I am passionate about cramming my face with cookies. These are hands-down my favorite that I’ve had here in the PNW so far and their chocolate chip cookies are phenomenal — soft middles laden with chocolate chips receiving a loving embrace from lightly crunchy edges, these cookies don’t hold back. If you like an equal dough-to-chocolate chip ratio then these aren’t for you, but they also offer several other kinds that rotate. My absolute favorite is actually some chocolate kind filled with cookie dough or cream or maybe some kind of arcane magic, but unfortunately it rarely appears because apparently some hippie cookie covered in crap that facilitates pretending it’s moderately healthy is «popular.» I still recommend trying all of them, though. The rest of the food selection is pretty consistently tasty though some things are a little ho-hum IMO like the cinnamon roll. That said, everything has been fresh and isn’t overly sweet. If you prefer less-than-fresh, they have their«prison food» selection up for grabs that are a day old and marked down. They also have gluten-free selections. Aside from pastries there are cheese and meat thingies, egg bowls, and shakes. Eat those, too, with the caveat that the single time I tried a strawberry one it tasted a bit chalky. I’ve tried sips of the coffee, had some decaf, and liked it well enough. Coffee aficionado friends have informed me they prefer Insomnia, but that this is still worthwhile for your caffeinated needs and desires. The staff is always friendly, they offer free wifi, and the music selection varies but is generally enjoyable. Can sometimes get pretty busy but it happens in waves and they are pretty quick with their service, so definitely stop by sometime and give them a try.

I have mad appreciation for a place that has solid veggie options. I got a breakfast sandwich with veggie sausage on a cheddar and chive biscuit. It was amazing. Service was quick as well paired with a friendly staff. The interior is totally Portland. Seemingly good place to bring your work to work on. The pastry/goodie options were abundant and looked delicious. Wifi password displayed. Definitely recommend.

It was a sunny Saturday morning when our family of four first experienced breakfast at Jim & Patty’s: a #5 Mr. Natural(egg, zucchini, spinach, tomato, cheese and caramelized onion for $ 6), a #7 Sweet Lorraine(egg, bacon, caramelized onion and Swiss for $ 6), a Hipster Bowl(half biscuits and gravy topped with bacon and a fried egg for $ 4.95); and a Pig Newton(sausage and cheddar chive biscuit roll for $ 3.50). My sons requested to split a cinnamon roll. My wife ordered a vanilla Borgia in a house mug. I ordered a house coffee and two small cups of hot chocolate for our sons, who secured a table in the back, next to a mural covering the entire east wall. I stayed up front at the receiving counter, watching two female baristas generate a busy stream of drink orders with meticulousness and speed. «May I pay you a compliment?» I asked the nearest barista. She smiled and nodded. «You are both devastatingly efficient. Your movement is choreography.» I delivered the food and drinks. The cinnamon roll and Pig Newton were warmed from bakery racks. The breakfast sandwiches followed from the kitchen. My wife was halfway through her Mr. Natural before I returned to the table with the last order, the Hipster Bowl. My wife purred over her coffee. We marveled over the dishes, both savory and sweet. My sons happily cleared the table and took pictures of the menu boards for my review. Satiated, we left in high spirits, looking forward to our return.

Such a cute café with a big menu and very nice staff! I ordered the egg cheese and meat(sausage) sandwich on a chive cheese biscuit and a mocha. Let’s just say that you will get your money’s worth with this sandwich. This sandwich or should I say biscuit is way bigger than a McDonald’s breakfast sandwich! For their drinks, they have a big menu so whatever you in the mood, I’m sure you can find something! They have coffee, tea, lattes, tea lattes, expresso drinks, smoothies, and milkshakes. Solid local coffee/breakfast spot. We got breakfast there for the first time — I thought they only had pastries, but they actually have more breakfast selection. We got one of the breakfast sandwiches with jalapeños in it and the Hipster Bowl. Let me tell you about the Hipster Bowl… It is half a biscuit, covered in gravy, topped with an over-easy egg, & two slices of bacon. Just delightful. The coffee here is good too. It gets a bit busy on weekend mornings, but I think that’s pretty normal for coffee shops.

Such mixed feelings about this place. I’ll go again, but I wasn’t quite as pleased as I’d like. Back in the Coffee People days, I was a Coffee Person. For reasons even I don’t understand, I’ve converted to tea the last few years and prefer a Chai or London Fog to a Mocha or Vanilla Latte. I could not have forseen this. But anyway, a Sunday of errand running called for a timeout Chai, so I stopped by Jim & Patty’s. If you remember Coffee People back in the 90’s, you’ll like it here. Very familiar, cozy, warm and friendly. It was moderately busy at 3 pm on a Sunday — small groups and friends chatting. Lots of baked goods to choose from, both sweet and savory. I chose a slice of pumpkin chocolate chip bread, which was moist and yummy. (By the way, as other reviews have noted, that chalkboard. Holy crap — 3 chalkboards stuffed full of their drink options, in small, colorful writing. It’s actually intimidating. I’ll just stick with something I know rather than spend 5 minutes to read all of the offerings.) But the reason I stopped in, my Chai latte, was… meh. Maybe because it’s not a coffee drink, don’t know. But it tasted very watered down, just a hint of chai without the spice flavors I love. I sweetened it a bit and could taste it a bit more, but still not what I was wanting. I’ll come back and maybe try coffee. I still drink it, just not as much as I used to. Maybe I need to hop back aboard next time I stop by Jim & Patty’s.

I’ve been in here twice now and that’s it. Never again and primarily because of service. Both times they’ve eagerly taken my money… and I’ve waited only to find out no one actually placed my food order. So, more waiting. Nice job guys.

I was crushed when their previous chain of shops closed in Portland. So crushed, I didn’t visit the mermaid for 5 years(then someone bought me a gift card so I started going and having bagels or pumpkin bread). Then they opened under the Jim & Patty’s name and I made the trek from Beaverton to NEPDX just for black tiger anything and pig newtons! Then they opened the Beaverton location and completed my life! While other coffee shops struggle to remember to use soy milk(I’m lactose intolerant, not only can I taste the difference between milk and soy, the pains of my stomach from milk scream the difference as well) when I order soy and pay extra for soy, J&P have never made such a blunder. The drinks are cleverly named and delicious. The various bowls and sandwiches also hit the spot when I need a bite(and let’s face it, they are good enough for me to purposely skip breakfast so I can order some here). No pretentious attitudes here, they take that«Good coffee, no backtalk» motto to heart. Everyone is always smiling and having a good time. Laughter is encouraged. Music is usually a nice mix of feel good Thanks for keeping me fueled – the world feels better with you!

I just had the Hipster Bowl. It is a half order of biscuits and gravy with a fried egg and bacon on top. The biscuit was nice and light and flaky. The sausage gravy was flavorsome. The fried egg was perfect, with a runny yolk — yum. The bacon was a nice crowning touch. A great breakfast for a great price!

Note: biscuit sandwiches are served only until 1 pm. So I breezed in excited to try one around 1:45 pm, and sadly I saw reality on the chalkboard. Still, I contented myself with a giant slab of the Naughty Supermodel marionberry coffee cake(wondering what on earth was inside it that would garner such a name). I then perused the expansive menu littered with drink options to the brim. Apparently Jim & Patty’s is iconic for their mochas, so I opted for the habanero mocha. Their 12 oz mocha was definitely huge by normal standards for some reason – plus there were two chocolate-covered espresso beans tucked in the saucer, which was a nice touch. The mocha had a FIERY kick. Like I took a sip and nearly started wheezing. Actually, no, I started wheezing for sure. Now that’s a flaming mocha. I enjoyed that a lot, and I loved the way the chocolate with the habanero pepper and cinnamon created a silky yet spicy blend. The coffee cake was massive, and could easily feed two people. Huge chunks of crusty cinnamon sugar bits studded a layer of marionberry, and then there was a large layer of the cake itself. The cake was buttery and slightly dense, and overall this was delicious. Still, I wish it had been heated a little and that there was more marionberry to balance out the cake and crust – but I can see why J & P’s coffee cake is so famous. I’m on a mission to explore every notable coffee shop in the west side of town – and so far I’ve been much pleased! Thank you Jim & Patty’s for keeping us caffeine-hungry westside folk sane.
