Way late with this but better late than never. The Old Place catered our daughters wedding in June 2014. The food was amazing and the service impecable! We had the mushroom meatballs, crab dip and Neman Marcus Cheese dip for apps. The entrée, roast beef as well as the Poppyseed Chicken Casserole was wonderful. They also made the groomscake, Butter Pecan! Our newly added son couldn’t have been happier. Our daughter was thrilled and we are still getting compliments. The people that helped during the event were professional and friendly! Being the mother of the bride, I was a bundle of nerves but they had everything under control!!! Thank you LuAnn and Laura!!!

Yead, sadly it is true — they closed down the buffet side of the business in March, and noow only do catering. What a shame, they had the best«pure» county cooking buffet in this part of the state — always good, always varied, always a value. UGH!

This place is heaven for those of us raised on real southern country food. Fatback, cracklin cornbread, fried okra, country ham, country chicken fried steak… the list goes on. I recited the menu to my father, who has not had fatback since his mother died 30 years ago, and tears came to his eyes. Service is buffet style. The place is an old country house out in the middle of… well, the country. Worth taking your older nostalgic southern relative to, just to watch their childhood flash before their eyes.

4.5 stars — This is the best country cooking within a 75-mile radius of Raleigh/Durham. Located in an old farmhouse next to a field with cattle, the setting couldn’t be more perfect for a down-home weekend Southern/country meal(they’re only open for dinner Fri and Sat, and for lunch and dinner on Sunday). They also are open all day on Thanksgiving for an unbeatable country feast(same price as usual). As you walk in, you’ll be greeted by the owners in a «parlor room» type area. The old patriarch of the family is usually chilling in his oversized chair that looks like it was from the 1920s(and so does he, bless his heart!). You’ll pay your $ 12 up front and then be guided to the buffet area, where the magic begins. This country cooking place provides the most«wow» moments of any in the area by far. The fried chicken is perfectly fried in batter that is neither soggy or oily, with the chicken meat so juicy and succulent inside(never dried out). The country ham is amazing. The crackin’ cornbread(crispy and not sweet) is down-home excellent. The chicken n’ dumplings are so savory and smooth without being clumpy or starchy — just perfect. The biscuits are fluffy and pillowy without a hint of greasiness. and the homemade apple crisp — one of the best desserts I’ve had at any caliber restaurant. My only small complaint with this place is that they don’t focus as much on the veggies. The turnip greens are alright, as are the limas and corn. That’s why I’ve deducted 0.5 stars from my final rating. The one veggie of excellent repute are the yams. This means it doesn’t reach the Wilkes House in Savannah, GA and Jones Kitchen in Jesup, GA pinnacle of country cooking that I always talk about. But the meats are definitely on par. If you live in the Triangle, take the pastoral 45 – 60 min drive to get here. You won’t be disappointed. Oh, and it’s cash only, so bring your wallet.
