If you’re wondering what all the hype is about, you clearly haven’t had Chicken Shack chicken. There is nothing comparable anywhere nearby. Chicken is always piping hot, and there are plenty of great sides to choose from(I like shack balls and mustard greens). I’ve heard good things about their seafood as well, but I can’t bring myself to get something other than the chicken. I would strongly advise you to get the sweet potato pie with it as well — it will not disappoint. I’m very happy I decided to try the Chicken Shack.

Fried chicken and shack balls were excellent. Price was fine. It’s not super fast but worth it still.

Let’s just say, the hype about the chicken is absolutely TRUE. This fried chicken is so good, I can completely understand why the restaurant was as busy as it was when I went during the lunch hour. The restaurant itself was not the«prettiest» however I would have no problem dining in. I actually took mine to go and had at least a 15 minute drive ahead of me before I could devour my food. By the time I finally got home it was understandably not as hot as it was when I got it but that didn’t stop it from being delicious. I brought some back for my son as well and he couldn’t stop raving about it. I ordered a 2 piece with fries as well as chicken strips for the kids. Everyone enjoyed it! The only thing that I wish was that the people who work there were friendly. They are serving some of the best food in this area, it would be nice if it were done with a smile. When I placed the order with the gentleman at the order counter he almost seemed irritated with me. Granted it was my first time here but I did know exactly what I wanted. When the food was ready I was given it with not so much as a Thank You. That all may seem small, but having also worked in the customer service industry I’m really big on good customer service. Despite that, I’m sure I will be back. I have to get more chicken!

Grew up eating at Delpits Chicken Shack. Mostly at the old Terrace Street location but glad over the years ain’t nothin changed. So when ever I’m back home in ol’BR I always make it a point to stop at Chicken Shack and pick up a delicious hot basket of that wet battered fried chicken. You will not find another like it where ever you go!

I’m leaving a review for this place because people just don’t know good chicken! And I looooove Chicken Shack! This is the best finger lickin chicken that I have ever tasted. I grew up with Delpit Chicken Shack and I didn’t understand the gold I had at my fingertips until I moved away. I live in Chicago now where they think they know good fried chicken… they don’t. I’ve been to Thailand and Vietnam, where the fried chicken is delicious, but it’s not Chicken Shack. And just last week I went to Willie Mae’s in New Orleans, which was voted the best chicken in America by all these fancy tv channels. Again, these people have quite frankly NEVER taken a trip to Chicken Shack. Now this place is slow, so don’t be expecting to get in and out in a hurry. I don’t think I’ve ever spent less than 20minutes waiting on a box of chicken, but I have never regretted my wait. It is always the crispiest and move flavorful chicken. I want to stop eating it after I’m full, but I just can’t, so to keep going. We all fight over the crispy delicious crumbs at the bottom of the box… just to keep from peeling the skin off the leftover chicken. This is by far the BEST chicken in America. It is proven. It is a fact. Don’t let anyone tell you anything different!

«Fast food» fried chicken joint in Baton Rouge; not in the best of neighborhoods, but super popular amongst the locals. The place had a steady stream of customers at 4pm. There was some drama with a customer yelling at the lady working the register when we were there. They went back and forth while the customers in line stood in awkward silence. No one seemed phased, so we rode it out. When in Rome, right? Anyway, we had friendly Southern customer service and chicken was made fresh to order. Their red beans & rice is some of the best I have ever had. It was all tasty, no doubt. I don’t drive through Baton Rouge very often, so not sure how often I would go back. In my own personal opinion, the neighborhood is my biggest deterrent. The business has been around forever and they do serve up some good Southern cooking. If this is your weakness, give them a try!

If your a fan of willie mae’s scotch house in NOLA then this is your place for fried chicken in BR. Service is friendly and fast. Good price for the amount of food that you receive. The chicken is always hot and delicious. I recommend going on Wednesday or Friday to grab some of their cornbread dressing. Me and my coworkers will be back for sure.

So… I’ve been here… a lot. It’s just delicious… just delicious fried chicken and every thing else. I’ve had the fried chicken, the mac and cheese, the cornbread dressing, the red beans and rice, the shack balls, the cole slaw, the lemon pie, and the peach cobbler… everything…delicious. There really are no words to describe the chicken… but i’ll try. Juicy, flavorful, wet battered, fried to perfection. And dang if their slogan isn’t right… KNUCKLESUCKIN’ GOOD!

This place does has a reputation for being the best fried chicken in town. We headed over to the shack to try a selection of their food. When we arrived I was curious to see that it is right next door to another chicken restaurant. No bother — they both seem to be thriving. The line at lunch is long but fast moving. Do yourself a favor and don’t order the tenders. They took forever to come out and they were super salty. The slaw and the chicken was VERY flavorful. Crispy juicy goodness. The mac and cheese is different Come check it out

Got a wild hair on my way to work one morning and decided I had to try Chicken Shack. Even with all the positive Unilocal reviews, I was a bit apprehensive mostly due to the location, especially when I saw there wasn’t a drive through! Beware: White girl in the hood lol! Truth is the inside was not even slightly scary. It was clean, and the staff couldn’t have been nicer. You can actually see Baton Rouge General Midcity Hospital from their building, so you know you’re safe ;-) Like I said, the staff was nice and very helpful with answering my questions. I had no idea Chicken Shack is a family owned business for the last 80 years — that’s almost a century, y’all! I grew up a KFC girl(mostly for convenience), but this place is worth a very LONG drive. They are expecting to open their 4th location next year, so you know they’re doing well for a reason. So what’s so yummy about Chicken Shack, you say? Well, the price certainly is an attraction. I let the staff guide me in what to purchase and ended up with a huge take out box of fried chicken breast, a leg, a homemade biscuit, grits, and scrambled eggs all for $ 5.99 with tax. Slight warning: the butter packets melted while sitting on other foods in the box, so not cool for biscuit perhaps but amazing to just pour over the grits! Oh and perhaps a little TMI, but the stomach pains and bathroom breaks a day or so later were worth it. I’ve had worse, and the food outweighed the cost for me lol. Anyway… definitely worth a try if you’re a fried chicken fan and love it especially fresh and crispy.

I went here for dinner while on a business trip based on a Unilocal search. I have always liked good southern fried chicken. Upon arriving I found it a little difficult to park due to all of the other cars but then that can also be a good sign. This is a very casual restaurant that does have some indoor seating but most people get it to go here. Prices are low and you get a lot of food for your $. I ordered a 3 piece chicken meal with dirty rice and shack balls as sides. I managed to snag a table while waiting for the food that arrived about 10 minutes. The chicken was very hot temp wise. It was more heavily breaded and greasy than I like but still good. I gave it a 3. The dirty rice was ok too.(3). The shack balls(which is a local specialty) are breaded and fried boudoin balls that were good and filling. The counter service was very friendly. Overall I am going to give this meal a 3 but a low 3. To my tastes this is what I call cheap chicken that is filling and inexpensive but basic in flavor. It wouldn’t warrant me returning on a future visit to Baton Rouge.

My friend told me I just had to try the chicken at Chicken Shack. I like fried chicken okay, but it’s not a «favorite food» of mine. So after a week or so, we came today. I ordered a three piece dark with Mac n cheese and«Shack balls» which are boudin balls fried in the chicken batter. I bit into that chicken and… Lort, this is going to be a problem. Pray Saints! It was so friggin good. I will be getting the Shack Balls every time I come here. Fast friendly service. They keep it cool in the dining area, sweater worthy for all of us that are always cold lol. Don’t eat this if you gotta go back to work. You will be done for the day. Five stars.

There are few things in my culinary adventures that make me happier than a good meal of fried chicken. I have to say that Chicken Shack is the second best fried chicken I’ve ever eaten. I’m glad to see a landmark institution that lives up to the history and hype! I’ll freely admit that I’m a fried chicken junkie. I still call my friend from college when I find a great fried chicken/chicken and waffles joint. When we can, we travel to eat fried chicken and compare notes like baseball scouts. I saw the article in 225 about the history of the Chicken Shack and concluded any place in business for 80 years has to be doing something right. Fried chicken in the south is a point of passion so I figured this place has to be great. The fried chicken here is absolutely insane. I don’t know what they do to their chicken before its fried, but it has to be heavily brined because its incredibly juicy, almost like a good prime steak. Soft, juicy, and generous portions. The coating is more batter-like than crumby, but has a crunch that can’t be beat. Seriously, it was like snapping a piece of celery or biting into a thick potato chip. It just crackles and crunches. You can feel the vibration through your jaw in a visceral crunch which gives a much different experience than hearing it. Its also thick coated so there is plenty to go around. The batter is so crisp because its made fresh. This stuff isn’t sitting around to get soggy. Sure, it takes a bit longer to get your food, but its absolutely and completely worth it. The sides are also made by someone who cares what they taste like and not just to have them on the menu. The red beans and rice as well as the greens have pork parts in them like hocks and tails to give them the right amount of texture and flavor. Both were cooked perfectly and not overdone. The potato salad was tasty and satisfying, but definitely not amazing. The same could be said for the fries. Overall, the sides are very good and borderline excellent. The chicken at Chicken Shack is completely legitimate and deserving of the high ranking on this site. Stop in for a fried chicken fix and see what all the fuss is about. I’m sure you’ll agree that Chicken Shack is an institution to be enjoyed!

Finger licking good! I’m so glad I randomly googled fried chicken on Unilocal and found this place. It’s not too far from my house which is a bad thing. Can’t be eating fried chicken all the time!!! It’s not in the best of areas and the interior/exterior is nothing to write home about. Bright yellow tables and super outdated. But, who cares?! I’m surprised they haven’t put Church’s(right next door), out of business. I’ve been in the search for some good fried chicken in BR ever since eating at Willie Mae’s in Nola. Finally found it! Not to mention, it’s super cheap! My family(6 of us) got a 16 piece mixed, large red beans and rice and large potato salad for 34 bucks and couple drinks too! I mean, that’s cheap! At least in my book it is… correct me if I’m wrong! And it came with a ton of biscuits(not my fave… were cold). The potato salad was some of the most delicious I’ve ever had(perfectly whipped and seasoned). My sister and brother in law are red bean connosierures and approved of the red beans and rice. I thought they were enjoyable as well. For the star of the meal, the chicken. It was perfectly cooked. The skin had just the right amount of crisp and the chicken inside was nice and juicy! Mm mm mmmmm! There’s no waiter service or booze. Just be prepared for a damn good meal.

Best fried chicken in Baton Rouge hands down. On Tuesday they have a special where you can get 2 people of dark meat for a dollar forty five. They have awesome pork chops and also of what you would call soul food lets plates from 11 to 245 everyday. Great pork chop sandwiches and great desserts. There’s also a guy outside who sells sweets such as brownies and candy apples he makes himself. There’s always a line but it moves quickly and you get your food relatively fast considering that they cook a lot of the things that are not chicken to order. If you want some good fried chicken definitely go to the Chicken Shack you can’t beat the prices at all and the sides are always homemade.

What is open late night on Saturday and is quick? Chicken shack! We got in there and it was pretty busy. Ordered 4 mixed pieces with rice dressing and fries as a side. Turns out they gave us 5 pieces of chicken and 3 of them were gone by the time we got home. Needless to say, it was a tasty ride.

Knuckle sucking good is their slogan and that is an under statement. I had the smothered oxtail with rice and gravy, sides of mac n cheese, collard greens, and«knock your teeth out» sweet tea. Everything was very savory and pure soul food. Everytime I come here I have leave with unbuttoned pants and requesting a wheelchair. You can’t go wrong with anything you get from here. However if it is your first time here you must go with their fried chicken. You’ll thank me later.

I’m sold! I passed this place en route to a work function. The words Chicken Shack piqued my interest and I came back the same day for lunch. Omg, I was so right. Friendly staff, DELICIOUSFOOD, and to top it off, a steady stream of classic soul music by Gladys Knight and The Pips, The Ojays, and more. What topped it off for me was the lady at the counter had ice water on my tray with the food. I didn’t order water! I didn’t order anything to drink! But she gave me water because that’s how awesome this place is! I gave four stars because I haven’t tried more food and I might just have come here on a ‘good day’. I’m sure it will change to five on my next visit.
