Hard to find, but worth it. Admission to the main facility and trails is free, and it is only $ 7/person to visit the historic ‘shack’ site. The building is interesting all itself, and fairly well explained in a short video in the small museum. The hiking trails are well maintained and interesting. The shack is well worth the price to connect that closely to the man and his ideals. Be aware that there is poison ivy, ticks, and mosquitoes, and so on as usual in places like this, so plan accordingly. I am not sure children would find much there, and others would be advised to read at least some of Leopold’s works to better appreciate the Foundation.

I’ve been here a few times since being turned on to it by an instructor I had years ago when I lived in the area. I’m so glad I had been encouraged to check it out, because it’s an under-appreciated asset to the area and an important destination for anyone interested in the natural history of the«Sand County» or of Aldo Leopold and his ideas. I’ve gone on the tour and just roamed the area on my own and it’s always a magical, peaceful place. To anyone even remotely in the area, I recommend reading«A Sand County Almanac» before making the trip, it’ll promote a much deeper understanding of and connection with the environment here. Be aware that the place can be a bit difficult to find if you’re not a local – Levee Road can be easy to drive right past on either side if you don’t know what to look for.
