Between the Inner Harbor and Baltimore’s Little Italy you’ll find a small patch of green known as «Columbus Piazza». Here you’ll also find a monument to the man who discovered America, Christopher Columbus. The statue is carved from beautiful white Italian Carrara marble and was dedicated on October 8, 1994 by none other than President Ronald Reagan and Baltimore Mayor William Donald Schaefer. Columbus is holding a map in his left hand and his right hand is resting on a globe. His statue sits on a six-sided base with carved panels illustrating the Nina, the Pinta, the Santa Maria, his birthplace in Genoa, his meeting with the Indians, and his landing in the new world. The statue itself is in excellent condition, but some of the inscription is tough to read. The main inscription reads; CHRISTOPHERCOLUMBUS DISCOVEREROFAMERICA OCTOBER121492 — — - DEDICATEDTOTHE CITYOFBALTIMORE BYTHE ITALIANAMARICAN ORGANIZATIONUNITED OFMARYLAND ANDTHEITALIAN AMERICANCOMMUNITY OFBALTIMORE INCOMMEMORATIONOF THEDISCOVERYOFAMERICA — — - OCTOBER121984 WILLIAMDONALDSCHAEFER MAYOROFBALTIMORE
