The Mexican food here tasted very authentic. I got a cheese enchilada with rice and beans and enjoyed every bite. They also had great chips and salsa. Service and ambiance was okay but the food was delicious and definitely worth it.

My family stood waiting for a table for 30 minutes right by the hostess stand. We were not helped by any staff member. People came in after us and were immediately seated in front of us. No the did not have a reservation. Service is not at all like it used to be.

Very good food, very good service and overall just a fun place to have Mexican food and drink Margarita’s. Their tamales are authentic and all of their food is delicious. I have always walked out of there very full. I would echo Private M’s comment about the Bistec Zacatacanos. I love hot spicy food, but good Lord, this will send you running to the bar for ice water. But in all fairness, the menu says Spicy, and the server emphasized how spicy it was when I ordered it. I highly recommend this for a comfortable, filling, economical evening of Mexican food drinks and great service.

The waiter was cool, but the tomatillo sauce was nothing but ground up pickled jalapenos. The food was so bland it did not have any Mexican flavor to it. I will never go back.

Don’t order the Bistec Zacatacanos unless you want a VERYVERYATOMICALLY spicy dish. I had it recently and it was so hot I was sweating and went through 3 glasses of water in 10 minutes. Yes, the menu said it was spicy. It didn’t say it was«Man Versus Food» hot. Not fun. Preload on Tums if you want that dish! Note: I like spicy dishes. This was just uncomfortable. That being said, the manager could tell I was struggling and offered to bring me something else and did not charge for the aforementioned dish. That was very nice of them and showed they were paying attention. This is good mexican faire for west county STL. It doesn’t compete with places from LA or Texas, but they tailor it to the market for which it is intended. We come here every so often and will continue to do so. I’ll never eat this spicy dish again though.

Overall, this place is not going to blow you away, but they did have good food and prices. I grew up on great Tex-Mex food so take my review with a grain of salt. Chips were fine but salsa was fairly bland. I tried the cheese enchiladas based on a «out of this world» description from a previous review, but I would describe it as average not amazing. The cheese was not very«melty» and the red sauce didn’t taste very unique. I do like the option to get whole black beans and not refried(many places don’t do this). All this said, I cleaned my plate. My favorite part of the experience was the drinks. I had one on the rocks and one frozen. In the future, I will only order frozen, mostly because it was that good and not because the other was bad.

Patt C — you are one tough customer! Anytime you write a 5-star review of a place I am going to give them a shot. I don’t know that I ever would have considered this place had it not been for your review. Wife and I stopped in for dinner. I was still languishing in the«can’t eat anything crunchy» phase of a multiple visit dental project so I needed something soft. I had a conversation with the waiter and finally settled on an off-menu order. My dinner would be cheese enchiladas with their poblano sauce(aka: mole) and a little chorizo thrown in just because. It was a busy night so the food took a little longer than a typical Mexican food in a strip mall meal takes to arrive. No problem. When it arrived it was a damn near perfect meal for me, with or without the dental restrictions. I had assumed the chorizo would have been an internal component of the enchilada construction but I was wrong — it went on top. This lead to greater co-mingling of the mole sauce and the chorizo which was a winning proposition. Cheese enchiladas can be pretty boring but these were out of this world good. I had a taste for flan but have found much of the flan in STL pretty disappointing. Not the case here! The custard was firm without that lacy edge that forms(my guess) from improper cooking temperature. The caramel was just the right consistency and in the right quantity. Basically, one of the best flan experiences I’ve had in the last couple of years. Added bonus — the dumbass parents who decided to take their less-than 1 year old and their already-agitated 3 year old out for dinner in a crowded restaurant at about 7pm on a Friday night arrived as we were leaving.

Terrible food. Worst chili rellanos ever had. Greasy and burnt pepper. Red sauce tasted like a can of tomato sauce. Sent it back and got a chicken taco salad. Not good at all. The shell was oily and burnt. The rice tasted hard and bland. Beans was okay. Also had the pork and cactus fajita. Greasy and bland. Peppers and cactus came out mushy tasteless. The corn and flour tortillas were microwaved and tasted dry. Not a good experience. Server was nice and apologetic.

This restaurant is absolutely amazing! We went there 15 minutes before they were supposed to close… I was expecting to be turned away, but they greeted us as if they were happy to see us. They were very welcoming and not once did they rush us. Ryan the waiter was phenomenal… He was funny and very and very helpful. Ryan made our visit very pleasant. .even though we were sure he was ready to go home. The food was so good and come out very quick… best refried beans ever… and i dont like refried beans. Margaritas were excellent… and the price for drinks was perfect. only complaint is… they need music! I would recommend this restaurant to everyone that I know and everyone I do not know who is looking for a nice place to eat a great meal that is affordable, excellent staff and nicely made drink that are worth your money.

Best Mexican food and Monday drink special. The best best bang for your buck. I know it is not high end Mexican food but it is the best value and consistent. The people who work there are great.

Mi Lupita was a must for me all through high school and even know that I don’t live in the area I always make an effort to go back when I’m in town. The food is great, always friendly service, and incredibly inexpensive. They have $ 5 lunches and great drink specials as well.

Busy on a Friday night… Every table full at 7:00 pm. Mango Margarita — plenty of mango but a little light on the alcohol. Salsa is smooth with a nice kick. Chips are crisp but have a bit too much after taste. Waitress does an ok job keeping drinks topped off and refilling the chips and salsa. Carne a la tampiquena. A filling meal. Good over all flavor. Steak was cooked thoroughly but not over-done. Good choice! Pork and cactus. A great mix of flavors. With plenty to share. Try this! Burrito deluxe — beef. Typical fair. Highs. Meals that seem fresh from a home kitchen. Good portions. Salsa Lows. Chips Ok. Price Wait staff Beef burrito Margarita(mango) — light on the alcohol — great on the size By 8pm a few tables were emptying up. The wait staff were quick to bus the tables and reset for the next guests. Everyone seemed happy with their meal selection AND had their to-go boxes. 3 adults — well fed — with a total bill… including tip… Of just over $ 60. Mi Lupita is worthy of a return visit!

It is time to update my review of Mi Lupita. As a matter of full disclosure, we eat here almost weekly, either for a lunch or a dinner. We started coming here in 2004 after hearing about it in being discussed on Frank O’Pinion as a place for good tamales. We knew where it was but had never stopped in. The next time we visit, we will have stopped in exactly 400 times according to my Quicken report. Since 2004 they have moved a few doors down, waiters have come and gone and until the middle of 2013, it was operated by Jose«Pepe» Campos. Pepe has moved back to Zacatecas but is it still operated by his sister, Lettitia, with a number of family members helping out. Nothing has suffered in this great little place with Zacatecan influenced food. If anything a few things have happened since Lettie came to help Pepe a couple of years ago. We think the salsa which was fine has gotten better. It is a pureed style with good heat and good flavors of jalapeño, cilantro, garlic and black pepper. It always has a good sweet/tart balance. For an unroasted tomato salsa it is the best we get anywhere and we eat at tons of Mexican places. The blessing is that it is not full of chunks of raw onion. I keep stressing the things that distinguish Mi Lupita from typical small, family Mexican restaurants. The guisado de puerco is exceptional and it that is all I ever ordered I would be happy. They make their own chorizo and I keep looking, but have never found any as good. Get soft corn tacos of chorizo, Mexican style or get a chorizo tostada and see what I mean. It can be greasy, depending on who is cooking, but what’s the harm in a little red chorizo grease running down your arm. Seriously, Lettie told us they are trying to make it a little less so. I love it. So naturally I love huevos con chorizo, either with or without nopales. The same goes for the pollo asado with chorizo. This is the only thing I order with flour tortillas.(They always deliver flour tortillas in deference to gringo tastes, so be sure to ask for corn and when they bring flour anyway, ask them for corn again). The chorizo also appears in Pepe’s Tacos with steak. Also since Lettie came on board and before Pepe left, I think the bistek Zacatecano has become at times, incendiary. I can eat it but I have to get up nerve, it can push the edge of my heat tolerance. It does have a well flavored guajillo sauce. They seem to have about six cooking sauces; a thin mild red tomato version for over the top of good chiles rellenos made with chiles poblanos. Then there is a very good rich red chile sauce is used to enrobe the tortillas for the red enchiladas. These are the one place where you should try some of the best ground beef you will get. I «never» order ground beef, but once in a while these are really what I want. The same beef is great on a tostada for low cost lunch. Next is a mild green sauce, tomatillo based with a little heat. They call it the mild version but it is too hot for Ms T. This is my go to sauce for enchiladas verdes filled with the aforementioned pork and also for chilaquiles verdes(sin cebolla) with a la carte pork. Fourth is apparently a hot green sauce which I was not aware of until recently. I have not actually explored what it or how to use it. They also make mole poblano which can be had with chicken or on your enchiladas. Finally there is the sauce Zacatecano that is used with the bistek and also with an egg dish. They have creamy, lardy homemade refried beans. They are simple, unadorned and some of my favorites. They also make respectable rice. We like the shrimp ceviche sometimes with some chips and a bottle of Valentina. The sincronizada with chicken is filled with good gooey cheese and is almost a meal. You will notice I have not mentioned burritos or chimichangas. You can get those at Chipotle or Chevy’s. Someday I will ask Lettie if they make burittos in Zacatecas. In Jalisco, I had to describe them to a friend who had never heard of it. I think they are on the menu for sake of the expectation. When you eat here and order the right things, you are getting Zacatecan comida casera. That’s home cooking.
