If you’re willing to make the twenty minute drive from downtown Durham, you just might find yourself in the middle of the Horton Grove Nature Preserve(FYI: you really would have to make this a destination, this isn’t a place you’d just stumble upon accidentally). Once you turn on Jock Road, you’ll drive down a mostly gravel road for about a mile before spotting a large area on the lefthand side where you can park. From there you’ll find a trail map with two easily loop trails, perfect for beginners. Dog friendly and walking kid friendly(although I wouldn’t bring a stroller). Holman Loop, located right next to the parking area, is a 0.8 mile loop that brings you through grass fields, into a forested area, and even to a gazebo like structure. Peaks Loop is another great option for a shorter«hike». It’s across the street from the parking area and all forested. I’d say it’s more challenging than Holman’s Loop, but neither is difficult. Peaks Loop passes over many streams and has man-made bridges for crossing. It’s much more scenic than Holman Loop. Both loop trails offer access to additional trails(see my trail map photo for details). Overall, Horton Grover Nature Preserve is the perfect spot to get away from the city and enjoy nature. I will warn you to wear heavy boots if you’re going to visit after a recent rain, it can get rather muddy! And while there are no bathroom’s on site, you can go across the road to Stagville Historic property and use their facilities(during operation hours).
