Having recommended The Great House to colleagues at work, we scheduled our holiday lunch before Christmas. I’m not sure if it was a bad day or what happened. But we were literally there 3.5 hours from start to finish. In full disclosure, it was in the building joining the little tavern there(not sure which building is ‘the farmhouse,” but they’re all part of the same property. The worst part was – «NOCRABCAKES are served in this building».only the other building. W.T.H??? That was the main reason I encouraged our group to dine here. Lunch was not good –we wound up with salads and burgers… nothing that stood out and certainly nothing worthy of the endless wait. The waitress grew tired and grumpy, the bar was oh-so-slow and our whole grew grumpy from hunger. By the end of our lunch –at nearly 3:15, We were all joking that we should just walk across the parking lot to the GOOD building for crab cakes for an early dinner. Oh well. No more lunch parties here for me.

Sadly, this establishment seems to rest on its setting and puts no effort into actually providing great food or service. I went with two friends for an exploratory lunch trying to find a location for a group of 16 to have their Holiday lunch. We were seated at a table with a Reserved sign on it which was kind of funny since there were only three other patrons in the place and they were at that bar. Though the hostess placed three menus on the table, there were only two set-ups(silverwear wrapped in a napkin). Though I understand that it is an old building with uneven flooring here and there, I was disappointed that the table that had been reserved for us was very wobbly. The server had to bring some sort of cork evener to make it suitable for having any beverages on it. Though there was not much worry about spilling beverages since one friend of mine and I both ordered tea and had to share the one little tea pot of hot water we were provided so we could not even each get a very full cup of tea without asking for another pot of water. We all three ordered the onion soup and it looked cheesy and smelled great but had no flavor whatsoever. Finally, we asked for our bill, but right about that time a party of nine was seated next to us and apparently got the entire staff’s attention since we did not see our server or bill again for 15 – 20 minutes. We brought these concerns to the hostess who assured us that all issues would be adressed for when we brought our group there. A few weeks later we arrived only to see that the place was empty again, but our seating was so jammed around our tables(a large rectangle configuration that we had asked for) that we were actually relieved when two of our party were unable to attend last minute. Essentially, they had placed a chair on each side of every corner so that those two unfortunate people had their plates practically on top of each other. This was unbeleiveable to me! The room was empty; there was enough space next to us to easily have added another set of tables! And, we had only one server for the 14 people. She was obviously struggling to stay polite, but when she brought out our entrees, she had to make multiple trips back to the kitchen each time. I can’t believe that with only two other tables in the entire place, there were no other staff to assist with bringing out our dishes a little more closely together. The food quality was not much better. One person in our party ordered a sparkling wine and got a totally flat beverage. Not a bubble to be seen or tasted. The server did apologize and assured us they would open a new bottle, and did. The chef’s special quiche was not very special. Average in taste and texture. And I ordered the artichoke dip which had a nice solid consistency the way I like, but also had a kind of old film on it as though it had sat under a warming lamp for some time. Once I stirred it, it looked a little more apetizing, however, the pita bread that was served with it was not toasted or baked so it had no structure to actually scoop the ‘dip’. I had to use my fork to glob the dip onto the limp pita bread and try to eat it before it slid off. There were some crackers along with the pita and those were strong enough for dipping but it was just not worth the effort to finish the entire dish. I just can’t believe that a place with linen napkins and decorations galore would not know the basics of good dining. Assign only one chair to a corner; have enough servers at least for food delivery instead of having the first people nearly finished while the last of the party is sitll waiting for their food; and finally: serve good food. This was average at best and disappointing since the prices certainly indicated a higher-end restaurant. I ordered an iced tea and a soda with my dip and with the mandatory 20% tip they added for our party, I spent $ 19 and change! Will not go back there again. If you go, enjoy the scenery and decorations; they are the only thing really worth the drive into the country.

This is my favorite restaurant in the area. The BEST crab cakes bar none. I can’t order crab cakes anywhere else because I am so spoiled by these, every other crab cake now disappoints, even at restaurants that are known for their crab cakes. If you still want to enjoy other crab cakes, don’t order these. Their fresh oysters on the half shell are also amazing. I never liked raw oysters until I tried theirs. Salads are all amazing, mushroom soup is fabulous. Oyster stew, clam chowder, house smoked salmon, calamari, and escargot are not recommended. It’s not that these are bad, it’s just that everything else on the menu is amazing, don’t waste your time with these. I have raved about their crab cakes for years, and no one has ever been disappointed. We come here for every special occasion(and then some).

This place has food equal to it’s charm. In an old farmhouse off the Loch Nairn golf course you will find one of the most amazing crab cakes ever. I love them so much I have trouble eating crab cakes elsewhere because I compare them to the Farmhouse’s crab cakes and they are generally found wanting. These are legitimately lump crab cakes where you wonder how they are staying together. They are not those gross crab cakes that are mainly filler. This place does have more than just crab cakes to recommend it. They also have my all time favorite salad. The warm goat cheese salad is incredibly good. Mixed greens, pine nuts, cranberries, and warm, delicious goat cheese. What is not to love? The atmosphere is really great too because you can choose to eat in the adorable farmhouse section, or outside under the covered tent with a view of the golf course. Either is great!

Their crusher Cabernet was great! Not too much. Second time there crab cakes were even better. Cognac pâté again excellent honey scallops nicely done but maybe too much honey. Nice and light though. Char special was only ok. Rolls warm and fresh with yummy fresh butter Vegetables superb. Awesome atmosphere. Farmhouse charm but light and airy. Great service. This place is my number one!

Our first time there. Ordered braised ribs. There was 1 rib, about 3 bites, and the rest of the plate was mashed potatoes. $ 26 for that and no salad comes with the dinner to make that price with that size serving more understandable. Will not return.

The Farmhouse is one of the best restaurants in the area. If you enjoy a well prepared dish with the finest ingredients and a traditional farm house atmosphere, check it out. Caroline, the bartender, is a perfectionist and will prepare the perfect cocktail and really knows her wines! Try the steak tournedos or the crabcakes if it’s your first visit, and you will surely return.

Food at the Great Room is a joke. I had the roasted veggie quesadilla. Veggies were crunchy and I think they got the tortilla from the grocery store. I could have made it better at home. The special was bay scallops in a wine sauce. They had no flavor. The ambience is beautiful but I won’t go back there to eat.

Love this place. Now have become frequent patrons. Service is good and attentive and enjoy steak nights. We prefer the tavern as it is great atmosphere by the fireplace and bar setting. You can get great tavern food or anything off of the Greathouse menu.

This diamond in the rough is worth the drive into the western suburbs. Surrounded by farmland hence the name. We live in West Chester and it’s 30 minutes from us. A lovely intimate restaurant with amazing food. I had a melt in your mouth veal dish that was delicious. Mushroom soup out of this world. My husband had steak au poivre that was perfection and says that the french onion soup is the best around. Excellent service and pleaset staff from the hostess to the waiter. Reservations are a must. We will be back.

After spending almost $ 1000.00 last month for family birthday dinners. First was a party of 10. The following week a party of 6. Three of the six got food poisoning from an appitizer. Next day called the manager and she said she would report it to the chef. She asked for my number and not one person has called to see how my guests are doing. No more Farmhouse!

years ago, we enjoyed a romantic Valentine’s day dinner by a fireplace in this quaint centuries-old farmhouse. Just returned for an impromptu birthday — very good brunch food selections as well as service! There are a few other spots in this area, but the Farmhouse is very welcoming in every respect.

I’ve been twice. Both times ate in the Tavern. Good selection of wines by the glass. No, great selection. The bartenders seem very friendly and attentive. The servers are ok. The hostess seems a little uppity. But overall, service is fine. The food is very good. First meal I had the salmon salad, with berries and nuts. Very good. The second visit I had a fish special. It was excellent. I have a feeling every meal will be good there. The ambience is nice too. I have not been to the formal dining room, but I understand it is even better than the Tavern.

When this is your place it seems silly to write a review but when your regular place dose something out standing it time to share a wonderful account of a perfect meal. Our first date was here, our first golf outing together and so many new friends began here also so make a note we DON’T like everyone knowing how WONDERFUL our own place truly is ! There our TWO different Restaurant here both wonderful and both so different with the Farmhouse and the Greathouse only a few steps a part. Farmhouse is Romantic with a intimate upscale feel that has a outstanding menu that WILL please every ones taste. Greathouse — Like its name sake is wide open floor plan that is use for party’s, events and wedding with a Chester Co. Tavern added off the wing which server a great Menu on its on right and also has limited Farmhouse menu on several nights. Then off the tavern there is a windowed round room with such a fantastic view of the first and Ninth golf hole which is always filled for the Sunday Bunch . Remember don’t tell everyone Michael C Must try the Chili

Whenever I am visiting my friends in nearby Oxford, PA, I make it to this restaurant. It is charming in every way! Located on the property of the Loch Nairn Golf Club, the atmosphere is quaint, charming, beautifully set and classic. The service is outstanding and the food is unbelievable. Try the oyster stew, then the Maryland Crab Cakes as your entrée. You will never regret it. And finally, the wine selection is fantastic! Definitely worth the trip.
